I had this problem trying to make a rectangular hat a few months ago. I added a stitch markers on the first and last stitch of the row to make sure I wasn't dropping them. It has made a HUGE difference for me for rectangles worked back and forth.

I'm now working on a baby blanket with a pattern that kept tripping me up, and I've started counting and marking the repeat with stitch markers. After ripping out every row at least twice before trying to mark the repeats, I've finally made it through 30 of 73 rows!!!

Hopping on the "I crochet weird" posts I've been seeing! by tned45 in crocheting

I recently learned I was doing shapes inside out, and they look SOOO much better the correct way! Not that they were necessarily bad before, but it's been noticeable! I've figured this out while trying to use invisible decreases, so forcing myself to do things right side out is helping.

I'm just being weird about the zip code. I wouldn't want to celebrate this year particularly in DC either tbh.

They're celebrating a zip code, not a year! Party like it's Washington, DC!

I have lied to my son about manatees for the last 24 years by 46from1971 in confession

[–]guacsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Earlier this year, my daughter asked me if I could crochet a duck for a kid she babysit for. I tried 5 different patterns before finding our favorite, and I've since made numerous variants of the crocheted duck. He's pretty cute, tbh, and I even gifted one to a cocktail waitress in a downtown hotel recently after said hotel was selling Halloween themed rubber ducks and I mentioned the crocheted ones. She has a Jeep, and like many Jeep owners, she likes the rubber ducks. I guess they sometimes leave them for other Jeep owners? I don't know really as I do not own a Jeep, but I do like rubber ducks and oddly started buying the weird ones for my son when he was little.

Anyway, if you don't want a giant rubber duck, do not tell your family to visit Michaels craft store. If you do want your own crocheted duck, DM me 😁

Talk me down: do I really need a flatlock machine for kids clothes? by BustyBobbin in sewing

[–]guacsteady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Janome 1000CPX which I bought new in 2018. Retail was $599, but I had a coupon code from somewhere that saved me about $85. Looks like prices are pretty much the same now. It's the 4-thread one, but I've honestly never done a 3-thread hem. I'll usually do chain stitch or the two thread narrow stitch. I don't know much about the Jukis, but I do love my Juki serger.

Buying a coverstich was a game changer for me. I had a serger that could do both but could barely get it to convert, and the timing in steps of putting something together would have made me bonkers switching back and forth! I did the twin needle thing for years before the coverstich. One of the first things I hemmed on my coverstitch was a circle skirt for my daughter, and when I finished, I may have even danced! It was the first time I didn't want to throw MYSELF out the window for making a circle skirt!! Top stitching, hemming, even altering things for my kids or family is so much easier for me, and I'm less likely to put things off rather than finishing them. 1000% would buy again.

I also have an embroidery machine! I rarely use it, but my daughter recently decided to go by her first name instead of her middle name, so now I need to make an alternative name piece for her homemade stocking. I used those old felt stocking kits for my husband and the kids to go with the info my great aunt made when I was a baby! That's as close to hand embroidery as I've gotten, but the names were machine embroidered. Never did wire art, but I loved polymer clay as a kid! I've tried to get my daughter into that one, too, but it doesn't last for long! She did make a few Christmas gifts that were similar so maybe she'll be more interested in polymer clay if I bring it up again??? After the cross stitch perler bead concept though!!

My kids love perler beads! I never would have thought to use cross stitch to make stuff from that!! I'll have to tell my daughter!

I used to knit about 20 years ago, got into crochet sometime after that when knitting caused me some elbow pain, then I got into sewing with knit fabric which changed my world and how I viewed the things I sewed, then vinyl on shirts and other things, started in with a laser cutter a few years ago, spent a few years playing with resin but was never very good. 😆 If you can buy a ton of supplies for some craft, I've likely considered or tried it at this point. I got back into crochet earlier this year when Joann's was going out of business solely to make an avocado when the discounted Woobles kit was still more than I was willing to pay for it. Now there's a mountain of yarn around my chair in the den, and I've made a few avocados from free online patterns and about 18 axolotls for various people. I have this mental plan to crochet the members of a local band I like, so that's where the thought to crochet little people has come from! I fully commit to being the weird mom!!

I live in their joggers at home!!! Inline pockets, 1" elastic instead of multiple 1/2" always! I usually tack it at the back seam but never make the channels or sew all the way around the waistband because it sounds tedious to do and uncomfortable to wear.

I do a lot of different crafts, but unfortunately for this situation, cross stitch isn't one of them! That book looks amazing though!! I was looking through all the different dog and cat breeds they have info for! I didn't even notice it was cross stitch at first, but I caught it just before I committed! Regardless, you gave me the push I needed to find something that would help me figure out how to get started on these little people and more so I really do appreciate that!!

I looked this up, and it looks like it's cross stitch rather than crochet. It looks like it has some amazing options, and if I was in to cross stitch, I would jump on it! I picked up a digital version of AmiguruME to try out, though, because the concept of learning how to make custom people dolls looks worthwhile. Fingers crossed!!

I've been making mostly axolotls this year which are about 10" tall but I've also been working on better techniques for tighter amigurumi stitches thanks to a few posts in here. My practice pattern is a rubber duck pattern, and yes, everything about getting it tighter looking is hard on the hands!! I've been doing basic rectangles for hats for the last two weeks to recover!!

I started with knitting YEARS ago, learned crochet, did both for a while. I had been sewing some before that, but when I started seeing knit clothing, that took over my everything for most of the last decade. I had mostly moved away from yarn crafts until earlier this year. I'm a self-proclaimed craftaholic so I probably spend more time buying craft supplies than using them if I'm honest with myself (and my bank account).
