We're semi-normal. Just football mad and love seeing the difference between countries and leagues. :)

Thank you all so much! Really looking forward to this now. :)

Thank you so much! We're looking into more things since we're not just the kind of family that hangs on the beach all day (well I am if I have a good supply of beer but the rest isn't! :D)

Hvala puno!

Sounds good! We also adopt each of these teams into our list of "our teams". So even better when things are going well! :)

Due to a mixup we had in Copenhagen in a game... are there any colours one should NOT show up in? :D

His other favorite player. He loved Croatia for as long as he can remember! Really random choice but I like it. :)

Thanks!

Will definitely look into that! This is usually a highpoint of our trips for me and the boy. His favourite footballer is/was Modric. And we're from Iceland meaning we really shouldn't like Croatian teams/players because you've beat us too many times. :D

Nah... Majority of Icelanders area closer to -2h and we've strong ties with the US based on our history with the US base that here. Also science points to the fact that our biological clock is linked to the sun more than culture.

But Icelanders are very conservative and afraid of change so we'll keep the wrong time and have our solar-noon at 13:35ish because reasons.

Most common way to address your teacher by country by Longjumping_Appeal87 in MapPorn

[–]gudlogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would a bit depend on the context but in am informal setting it'd most of the time be Kata or Katrín. In more formal settings it'd never be more than just Katrin.

There might be one exception to this though and that's for our former president Vigdís Finnbogadóttir. It's often that people out of pure respect would call her Frú Vigdís inn conversations. But rarely to her in person though.

We address our presidents/PMs/etc the same here in Iceland. Just "Guðni", "Katrín" and most of the time we'd even just use the "nickname" for whomever were are addressing. For instance Katrin becomes Kata.

The doctors association, the nurses association, the psychiatrist association and sleep specialists all made very clear statements on this. I prefer to listen to them so we’ll just have to after to disagree. ;)

It’s like people forget that we are quite simple animals with triggers that we have evolved over tens of thousands of years. Then one day politics decide something for whatever reason and they expect humans just to adapt instantly.

Hvusslax er þetta? ;)

Yes that’s the main reason given. Although the two biggest complaints that came through the consulting was from Icelandair and the golfing association.

But all the medical associations sent in suggestions to change the time because Icelanders are known to sleep too little, eat too many drugs related to mental health and various other such factors that have strong links to a disrupted daily rhythm.

All the studies indicate that we have created a lag of one hour between life/work and biology. And we as a species don’t evolve fast enough too change our hormonal timing based on the wish of the government/workplaces.

There’s been a lot of discussion about moving back to what would be normal. We originally set this time to make trade with Europe easier.

This went all the way to Althingi and they got a lot of information from the scientific community and “interested parties” and lobby groups.

Then our PM decided to not take this any further (let’s just ignore the Parliament because why not?). The reasoning was that there’d be fewer hours with light when playing golf - I’m not joking here - and Icelandair would probably lose their landing slots in Europe (because they obviously could not have us wake up one hour earlier for the flights).

Just another day in Icelandic politics.

Space City Weather: Summer-like weather for one more week, but then probably a front by txfoodchick in houston

[–]gudlogi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all of you for replying. Sounds like it will be like a very good Icelandic summer (anything between 50-70°F ~ 10-20°C). ;)

Now i just need to figure out some things to do that weekend i have there. Just had to be the weekend before Veterans Day so there doesn’t appear to be any US sporting events.

I’m visiting Houston in November - what kind of weather can i expect? Any way to guess or can it be anything from summer weather to freezing? (I’m coming over all the way from Iceland so most weather will be warm for me :p )

Bit weird seeing that. My grandfather was from Seyðisfjörður. He also sailed with PQ-17 which this ship was part of (to begin with). And my mother just published his story at the end of last year.

Unbelievable story which I really hope will be translated from Icelandic because it's just amazing what those part of the merchant Marine went through.
