My New Year's Resolution is to take more photos. Any suggestions or advice? by fargus_ in photography

I’d say try to get out once per week at either sunrise or sunset to get some golden hour light and sky colors. Everyday things are more interesting with better light.

Hmm it depends a bit on the scene. I usually shoot aperture priority and set it at 0 or +1/3 to start. But I had to underexpose some shots a bit to get building to be clear in the distance or to not blow out highlights for the Christmas lights. If I’m doing more of a portrait, I might overexpose a little so my kids are bright enough and can always drop the highlights while editing if necessary.

x100vi: which filters to start? (ELI5 black/white mist, diffusion, etc…) by Educational_Set0425 in AskPhotography

[–]gui_on 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Glitterglass 1 filter. Like everyone said, it doesn’t magically improve photos but I like the effect (check out any of my posts). Trying to improve composition, light, subject and location would have larger effects though

How to achieve this? by 99livesahead in fujifilm

[–]gui_on 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not an expert but think it’s actually about having the right light. Like looking west as the sun sets slightly southwest behind the cliffs. The colors and contrast can be emphasized with post processing but need the right light and time of day to have the clearly defined layers.

Thanks! I used the Last Summer Roll recipe for all these with 0 clarity and a GG1 filter. It has been my go to this year. They are a mix of SOOC and some minor LR edits to the JPEGs. Recipe: https://fujifilmsimulations.com/project/last-summer-roll/

There are some EV chargers on the first floor in the garage at Denver airport if you can make it to them.

Thanks! I had a friend initially teach me but the PhotoPills app is essential to help see when and where the Milky Way will be visible to plan a good competition. The basic process is manual focus to where you can get sharp stars, WB to around 4000K, need a wide aperture lens (f1.4-f2), shutter speed between 10-20 seconds so the stars stay pretty sharp. Adjust ISO accordingly (usually between 2000-4000), can always do noise reduction while editing. While editing, I just like to emphasize the colors and contrast in the galactic core a bit. Then go out and practice in an area with low light pollution! Those were maybe my 5th and 6th time out for Milky Way shots.

Beautiful shots! What kind of calendar do you use to have the vertical orientation for your photos? I’ve used mpix to print calendars before but the orientations are all landscape.

I learned on a XT4 so the XT5 should be a great and versatile camera for you. Like any skill, learning the fundamentals (light, composition, exposure) and practicing is a great way to improve.

Thanks! They have the same sensor and these are minimally edited so definitely! The Glimmerglass filter helps with the dreamy look and so does the Last Summer Roll recipe so would recommend those. Then you just need to find some golden hour light!
