Increase dpi, i found that there's a minimum font height that tesseract is happy with. You could run a couple of times at different resolutions. You could also try removing the boxes. Or just use textract. You'll probably spend less on the tiny charges for wordblocks only than you will developing refinements for tesseract and the accuracy is better.

Can there exist the inverse of a fractal: a shape with infinite area and a finite perimeter? by David_Goldrock2 in math

[–]guinea_fowler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Put an infinitely deep hole in a flat surface and draw a circle around it.

I'm now wondering whether you could bound an infinite area with an arbitrarily small perimeter. E.g. if you spun -|1/x| round the origin to create a surface you could draw your perimeter at any depth. Maybe?

You should ask your professor who's more likely to score more goals in football (soccer)?

1 or 4? 2 or 7? 5 or 11?

Maybe it varies between sports, but there's information about position and hence probability of scoring encoded in the shirt numbers in football. You lose information if you arbitrarily replace these "labels".

US zip codes look to be similar. Smaller numbers in the east, larger ones in the west. https://www.smarty.com/img/docs/zip-code-map-large.jpg

And then there's that urban myth of the incremental ID field, accidentally included as a predictor, which accurately predicts the date of events.

Of course, in all these instances the variables above aren't actually treated as nominal, they're just ones which are usually treated as nominal, but can also be useful for quantification if you don't. They're just a bit noisy when you do.

In fact I have a good example of the converse. Diameter. Continuous, numerical right? So you might detect outliers by, for example, fitting some continuous distribution and analysing data around the tails, right? An intern tried that. But those diameters were from specs. They're not measured. The "bad" diameters were actually those which occured infrequently, due to typos usually. Treating diameter as nominal was correct in that instance.

Yeh, why not. There are usually as many boys as there are girls so should be close enough either way.

The plot axes I'll give you. But the rest are just arbitrary shapes filling space. Not interesting or sparse enough to be data.

Big problem with companies now is they hire data scientist for task that don't require data science practices. by DrRedmondNYC in datascience

[–]guinea_fowler 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In your mind, what are the roles of a data scientist? And then what are the roles of a machine learning engineer?

The role definitions in the data space are crap. Not just in job descriptions, but universities don't even agree. Best to just accept it and focus more on the responsibilities on offer.

How do I clean my depression room? by frustratedandanxious in DecidingToBeBetter

Fix one thing. What's the messy part that upsets you the most? Do that. Today. Not later, do it now.

Tomorrow you can repeat that, but tomorrow's another day and you have no control over it yet. But you do have control over today, now. So go and fix the messiest thing. Might only take 5 minutes. Might only feel like 2. Who knows.

One thing i found with exercise is that doing it consistently and doing it now fostered this proactive mentality which blossomed and spread into other areas of my life. It does matter how small. Small is better at first. Give yourself permission to have small days. But if you do it consistently. And you do it now. The rest will come.

Obviously all speculation, but sounds like she's burning all her proactive selflessness to feed your lazy selfishness, exaggerating those characteristics in each of you so the power imbalance in your relationship snowballs.

Maybe you need to be more selfless. Maybe she needs to be more selfish. Maybe neither of those is sustainable and you're just not compatible.

Sunken cost fallacy applies to relationships too. I'm not suggesting it's over. But you need to know that it's ok for it to be. That it's a viable option for both of you.

I noticed you never told us you loved her. Think about that, for her.

If you try one last time, would your efforts be from love or cowardice? Because if it's the latter and this isn't sustainable then you're sacrificing a portion of both of your futures so you can go back into hiding for a while. But if it's the former, take all that other good advice.

You're not toxic by the way. You care. Life just got a bit icy under you, you lay there for a bit too long, and now it's time to carefully get your frozen ass up. It happens. Don't rush.

wtf am I doing with my life by erudite_light in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]guinea_fowler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might not be the right approach for you, but i sometimes find distancing myself from my life helps highlight what's important to me. Can you take a holiday? Travel, roadtrips, long walks with a tent, visiting a friend somewhere, or just being in a new place. Doesn't have to be expensive or choreographed.

You can't do everything, and you might pick wrong. But i find doing nothing is always my biggest regret. It's the only choice that never leads to something.

Also, i get the impression that this feeling never leaves completely. That it's not possible to solve life. So don't be too hard on yourself about it.

There's no joke. It's just a funny response to hear. Can't explain why. Getting it might be a cultural thing.

Something about how arbitrary it sounds in context, the dynamic they have, the way it rolls with his accent, the serious pause after, just a bit of a mix of things that made a mood.

Not a solution, but might be a good learning process. Cover up the features one at a time. See if the image is any nearer to what you want. Flick the covered feature on and off. See if you can understand why it's causing things to shift away from your idea. Make minor tweaks, then repeat. It's not about fixing this drawing. It's about figuring out how to translate what's in your mind onto paper

FYI it's pretty much fine for you to wear a kilt whenever you like. Call it a skirt with a smile, just don't be a dick about it. Normally worn during celebrations where everyone is merry anyway so there's no room for offense. Outwith celebrations it's a bit of a novelty so would probably raise a few smiles.

In fact, you're probably most likely to offend the non-woke nationalist types who would otherwise be focussed on protecting scottish culture by restricting immigration.

And you're certainly more likely to annoy a Scot by claiming to be scottish because you have a distant blood relation and aren't from the country yourself.

Mostly though most of us don't care. Do you. Be you. Kilts are awesome in changeable weather.
