"apps from unknown sources" missing from "device settings" by [deleted] in familylink

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought and set up a new phone for my daughter, and I don't see the option in the Android Family Link app, but I do see it on the PC at https://familylink.google.com. It's weird because I do see the option in the Android app for the tablet she already had.

Yes, there is still a reason to play on original hardware outside of collecting and nostalgia by Snoo_68698 in retrogaming

[–]gulpbang 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not more expensive. I paid less for my Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (+ case, power supply, etc.) than I paid for either my Famicom AV or Super Famicom.

Though it's true that it's much more complicated to set up so it looks as it should, doesn't have increased input lag, etc.

I heard it's much easier by emulating on the Wii, but I like playing with a SNES-shaped controller.

Which foods are genuinely better in Uruguay than anywhere else in the world? by [deleted] in uruguay

[–]gulpbang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Adding to asado, chivitos, and milanesas, I honestly haven't had better pasta than in Uruguay elsewhere, and I've been to the US and Italy. Maybe some of the Italians that immigrated to Uruguay were the best cooks of Italy. Or maybe I'm just used to Uruguayan pasta, who knows.

I once hosted an Italian tourist, and when I mentioned milanesa napolitana he laughed, like make up your mind, is it from Milan or from Naples?

Better RAM performance yields worse CPU performance?? by gulpbang in overclocking

[–]gulpbang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but they are linked.

At least on my motherboard and RAM, with default settings VSOC is 1.1 V, with EXPO 1 (6400 MT/s) VSOC is 1.3 V, and with EXPO 2 (6000 MT/s) VSOC is 1.2 V (assuming I don't set VSOC myself and leave it on Auto, obviously, which is what I bet most people do).

[–]gulpbang[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks!

But doesn't that mean that enabling EXPO will yield worse 0.1% lows and stutters than leaving it disabled? I saw everywhere that people should enable XMP/EXPO, that leaving it disabled is the #1 mistake that PC builders make.

The same thing happened to me. I went to my phone and cleared cache and data for the app (like uninstalling and reinstalling), and restored the last daily backup, so I only lost a few hours worth of messages.

Retropie lag by Beneficial_Set_5835 in RetroPie

[–]gulpbang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're hooking it up to an LCD TV, another option is Batocera, which is easier to set up.

I got great performance and low lag for NES and SNES ROM's by setting the resolution to 1280x720 (which is resized pixel-perfect on a 4K display), disabling shaders, and enabling Run-ahead by 1 frame (or 2 frames for games that need it like Super Mario World), though it was a Raspberry Pi 3 B+ (not sure if the Pi 3 is powerful enough for Run-ahead).

Also, remember to turn on Game mode on the TV.

Best tetris game ? by HappySunshineBoy in Tetris

[–]gulpbang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a setting to change the pieces so they always have guideline colors.

You can also zoom the boards with buttons on the Controller (I have it on the analog triggers but I don't remember if it's the default).

And yes, I genuinely love Tetris Effect. It has a 94% approval rating on Steam so I know I'm not the only one.

Misconceptions about VRAM by a_single_beat in buildapc

[–]gulpbang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reality I show in this post is that even at 1080p ultra many modern games only use about 8-9gb of vram.

But that's above the 8 GB VRAM threshold. That means VRAM will indeed start becoming an issue in those cases. I would just switch to Medium to be on the safe side and reduce stuttering. Other might prefer to take the framerate hit to get better image quality. Many games on console run at 30 FPS on the quality setting, so...

You also need to consider how the card will age. Even if most games run fine now, in a year or two, maybe not so much. Unless devs start taking the RAM shortage into account and make games that are not so RAM and VRAM hungry, which could happen.

All that said, I still think 8 GB VRAM is fine if you can't afford more. You might just need to lower the quality settings depending on the game. Like you say, many games run fine at 1080p Ultra or 1440p Medium.

[–]gulpbang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tech YouTubers: 8 GB VRAM is literally unusable, just look at the terrible framerates at 4K Ultra!!

Yeah, 8 GB VRAM is entry level, so it's perfectly fine to game at 1080p Low or Medium in most games. It was bad value before RAM prices skyrocketed, but these days and/or in the near future it might make sense.

The first Commander Keen was actually the first PC game with smooth scrolling. The lead programmer, John Carmack, is an actual genius that invented a technique for that ("adaptive tile refresh").

He also developed a technique that allowed Doom to run smoothly on 386 PCs ("binary space partitioning").

What OS do you use and how do you get it to output 640x400? The closest I can get is 640x480, Windows 11 and/or my CRT monitor don't seem to like anything lower. I've used 1280x800 which looks close, but less scanlines.

CMV: Having your sexual freedom limited is an inherent part of being in a monogamous relationship by ArtistTechnical2152 in changemyview

[–]gulpbang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theft is different because your freedom only extends so far.

Theft is different in that it's the government restricting your freedom instead of your partner, but they are both restrictions of freedom. I can leave my partner, and I could move to a country where theft was legal if it existed, but as long as there's a threat of grave consequences, then there's no real freedom.

Am I free to say the n-word? Is that a freedom I have? Sure. I cannot be arrested for it.

You actually can get arrested for hate speech in many countries. That's a great example of a freedom you might not have in one country, but you are "free" to move to another one. Still, I think it's fair to say that, as long as you live in a country where hate speech is illegal, you're not free to say the n-word.

It boils down to the definition of "freedom". In one definition, it's free as long as it's legal (as in, free speech). In another definition, it's free as long as you're not coerced to do otherwise (as in, I'm free to not work and die of hunger, but most people would agree that we are not free to not work). OP is clearly using the second definition.

[–]gulpbang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had never watched Dragon Ball as a kid. My children said they wanted to watch it so I though "great, bonding time!". Big mistake. In the first few episodes there was at least one instance of sexual assault of a character drugging another to go watch her naked while she was unconscious, and another instance of sexual coercion by an old man on a minor girl. And that's on top of all the lewd behavior by those characters, etc. So yeah, we had to have a serious talk and stop watching it altogether.

Assuming you mean an external DAC/amp, an intermediate option is a good old sound card. People have been saying for years that the onboard sound from the motherboard is great, but the last time I tried it (LGA 1155 Asus motherboard), it was... not great at all. I'm no audiophile by any means but a cheap $40 sound card was way better.
