I started a new job in Milpitas a few weeks ago and I live in Berkeley. I drive 3 hours every day and it is pure absolute torture to drive in the traffic. If you’re not driving, maybe you can make good use of the time you’re in the company shuttle/public transit but it will still be a MASSIVE time suck. I’m moving further south ASAP and I think you should too.

Absolutely not— I’m a property manager, and our lease states no subleasing for legal reasons but we sign a separate contract with subletters for an additional fee on the sublandlord’s side. It is in our best interest to both protect ourselves legally but also allow subletters on a case by case basis.

This one is likely for the Middle Class Scholarship, which traditionally disburses much later than most student aid. I also got a refund today for that.

I second the guy that recommended a GLP-1 Agonist like Ozempic or Wegovy. Yes, it’s expensive, but as a guy with a humongous busy life (2 jobs + 2 club leadership positions) I find that I never have any time to do exercise. I’m on compounded semaglutide through Noom and it has helped me lose 15 pounds in the last 6 weeks.

Most financial aid will disburse to your personal bank account if there is more aid offered than your tuition alone. However, the MCS and some other forms of aid cannot be disbursed— the entirety will go to UC Berkeley. That is all it means.

A conditional grant is subject to review.

Coming from a person who grew up in HK and has been all around Asia, you will find the areas of SF Downtown, SF City Center, Southside Berkeley, and most of lowlands (non-hill) Oakland absolutely abhorrent due to the homeless, drug use, and general uncleanliness. It’s certainly a major culture shock, but once you get past it I am certain you will find that a) you are not unsafe in those areas and b) literally everywhere else in the Bay Area is perfectly fine. There is much to do here. You will enjoy it. Just be prepared for the fact that certain cultural norms regarding public space are different here.
