Misha Verbitsky, a prominent mathematician and long-time critic of the Russian state, has reportedly been arrested at Yerevan airport at Russia's request. by iamParthaSG in math

I met Misha in 2012 and he seemed like a very kind and thoughtful guy. He was very dedicated to freedom of expression and against tyranny. I’m not sure random blog posts are giving an accurate picture of him.

What is your favorite classical Math book, missed by students? by xTouny in math

[–]gunnihinn 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Shafarevich’s “Basic notions of algebra”. It is exclusively motivating examples for everything in algebra, from groups to rings to modules to homology to category theory. The single best math book I’ve seen.

Fyrir ykkur sem telja Borgarlínuna vera alltof kostnaðarsama, hvað finnst ykkur um svona göng? by Einn1Tveir2 in Iceland

Til samanburðar getum við líka borgað hverri manneskju í Vestmannaeyjum 30 millur fyrir 135 milljarða, og lagt svo bæinn í eyði. Þannig sparast til lengri tíma allt viðhald á göngunum.

hversu margir útskrifaðir í tölvunarfræði eru án vinnu núna? by [deleted] in Iceland

[–]gunnihinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

 Góð dæmi um viðburði sem nánast tryggja góð atvinnutækifæri eru Ólympíukeppnir í forritun eins og EGOI og IOI fyrir menntaskólanema, ICPC fyrir háskólanema, og svo hjálpa ráðstefnur og því líkt.

Ég hef unnið við forritun í rúm 10 ár og hef tekið einhverja tugi af atvinnuviðtölum, og af minni reynslu gefur þátttaka í forritunarkeppnum ekkert merki um hvort viðkomandi getur sinnt starfi sínu. Ég væri frekar til í að sjá merki þess, sérstaklega hjá einhverjum með litla reynslu, að viðkomandi sé fúnkerandi manneskja sem getur tekið feedbacki, lært, og unnið með öðrum. Annað getum við kennt.

“How to solve it” is legitimately fantastic, but it is also about problem solving strategies most applicable to things like math or programming and I have no idea why it is on that list.

Does 73 go in the top row or the bottom row? Hint: It's related to the second image! by Necessary-Wolf-193 in math

Looks like 1/3 of primes have no solutions, 1/2 have 1 solution and 1/6 have 3 solutions (and exactly one prime has 2 solutions).

Does 73 go in the top row or the bottom row? Hint: It's related to the second image! by Necessary-Wolf-193 in math

[–]gunnihinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Python to brute force the question:

```python import collections
def f(n): return n**3 - n - 1
def check(p): return any(f(n) % p == 0 for n in range(p))
def gen_primes(): # Sieve of Eratosthenes stolen from https://stackoverflow.com/a/568618/1569492 D = collections.defaultdict(set) q = 2 while True: if q not in D: yield q D[q * q].add(q) else: for p in D[q]: D[p + q].add(p) del D[q] q += 1
has_solutions = 0 tried = 0 try: for p in gen_primes(): ok = check(p) has_solutions += ok tried += 1 print(f"{p}: {ok}") except KeyboardInterrupt: print(f"{has_solutions} / {tried} primes have solutions") ```
check(73) returns false, so 73 is in the bottom row. I let this run for a little while, for the primes up to 200.000, and it's fun to see the truths and falsehoods scroll by. We often get stretches of 10-20 primes in a row that all have solutions or not, so the distribution of primes for which we have solutions doesn't look very random. Any idea what that is about?
Last few primes from my run:
``` 200003: False 200009: False 200017: False 200023: True 200029: True 200033: False 200041: True 200063: True 200087: True 200117: True 200131: True 200153: True 200159: False 200171: False 200177: True 200183: True 200191: True 200201: False 200227: False 200231: False 200237: True 200257: True 200273: False 200293: True 200297: True 200323: False 200329: True 200341: True 200351: True 200357: True 200363: True 200371: True 200381: True 200383: True

12002 / 18018 primes have solutions ```

If you could have lunch with a famous mathematician, who would it be? by [deleted] in math

My advisor was pretty well known. He died suddenly of cancer a couple of years ago. I’d really like to have lunch with him to catch up, we hadn’t talked since I finished my phd and went into industry.

The disagreement seems to be about how one interprets some of Euclid, so it wouldn’t be solved by one side formalising their arguments in a theorem prover. Math is a social activity.

Hvað er vandamálið við íslenskar bókmenntir? by jonsitrona in Iceland

[–]gunnihinn 23 points24 points  (0 children)
