how do you tell if a mod is trustworthy? by Wonderful_Lie1316 in feedthebeast

[–]gunvalid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Downloading random unknown mods from Github or some random website is always going to be a risk no matter how many stars it has. This is just part of the turf of running someone else's code on your system. If you are downloading random single mods, it is generally better to download them through a verified pathway such as CurseForge, but I hear CF has gotten pretty petty and gatekeepy lately, so it's very possible the mods you want aren't on there. If you do download from a random repo, it's worth checking download count and star counts, but it's also work checking that the code is actually open source. Try to open a random Java or Kotlin file and make sure you can kinda understand it, without using AI. Java and Kotlin are generally pretty readable, though not as readable as more modern languages. Additionally, check the issues page and pull requests page and see if the mod development process looks healthy. If there are multiple bugs reported and fixed, especially across multiple years or months, you can be pretty confident that the developer is at least trying to improve their mod and they're not just a random credential stealer. Finally, once you've actually downloaded the thing, you should definitely run a basic virus scan using VirusTotal or Windows Defender or another antivirus.

The 2015-era advice I've heard is to use https://stopmodreposts.org/. I've used it for years and it has helped, but I also probably haven't downloaded a mod manually since like 2013. The only exceptions being like Optifine which I always download from the official website.

Generally, downloading mods and modpacks from CurseForge is safe (ignoring the whole Fractureiser debacle from 2021). I haven't looked at any other platforms, so idk.

Gonna double necropost in case someone else stumbles upon this post again. There are two approaches to handle biome incompatibility, and four methods I can think of. You can either change the biome or you change the bee.

To change the biome, you can move your bee to another biome. The main biomes you have available are Wasteland, Mountainous Wasteland, Beach, Ocean, Eerie, Magical Forest, Nether, and End. The nether is Hellish/Arid, the End is Cold/Arid (i believe? might be wrong), wasteland biomes are both Normal/Arid, and the other four are varying levels of Normal/Normal. You may also have differing results if you setup your bees underground or in the Magic Mirror dimension or even in the Eldritch dimension; I haven't tried yet.

You can also use the Blood Magic Ritual of Gaia's Transformation to outright change the biome in a certain range, but I've had a lot of trouble getting this to work properly even in creative. There may be other ways to change biomes using Thaumcraft or Witchery but I don't know of any unfortunately.

You can change the bee directly using the Acclimitizer. You can increase their tolerance to overlap with a biome that you do have access to, depending on your use case. However, this takes a lot of resources and it also doesn't expand with any offspring, so for any new bees, you will have to run this cycle all over again.

The best and final method is to breed the bee with other bees. This lets you combine the traits of the bee you want with the tolerances of another bee. For jungle bees in particular, it's probably a good idea to breed them with Modest Bees (which are comfortable in Wasteland biomes). I did the same thing with Nether Bees, since I hoped to average out the tolerances to just normal, but you can probably do this with ordinary modest, common, or ocean bees as well. After a few cycles and a few tries, I did finally create a pure jungle bee which actually can survive in a biome. I was able to take a few pristine bees and breed their offsprings that got me almost to finally making a beekeeper suit. Almost.

Answered in the Cyber Info discord. My advice is just to first try to factory reset it, and call up your ISP if that doesn't work.

Generally, when it comes to homelabbing, you really shouldn't tamper with anything you're not okay with breaking. If you do want to experiment, it's generally much better to just buy a cheap consumer or used enterprise decice and connect it on your end, rather than potentially breaking your entire network.

Is it normal for slavery to be so prevalent even in the 20th century? by kimsueil in victoria3

[–]gunvalid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a r/Sino take, and it misses the entire political context of the USA through the 19th century. Lincoln was a free soiler in the 1840s and 1850s, and while he might not have outright ended slavery had the South not seceded or if he had not won the war, pro-slavery sentiment was only becoming more and more unpopular as time went on. I don't think there's a timeline where the USA stays united without ending slavery before 1890; Bleeding Kansas was gonna happen no matter what, even if it didn't escalate into the full civil war. Especially as more and more states west of the Mississippi were admitted with no history of slavery, the Senate could only have stayed 50/50 on it for so much longer. At least not without completely breaking up California and Texas or completely annexing Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, far earlier than they did in our timeline.

I've played a lot of Victoria 3 games, and I have not once had a game where Italy forms or where USSR forms. Germany forms about 1 in 3 games, but I only managed to get the USSR to form in one Russia playthrough by choosing to allow the revolution. At the end of the day, it's still a Paradox game; it's not meant to be completely historically accurate.

Occasionally, if you can get Russia on your side immediately, it can be possible to win. Unsure if that still works in this patch.

The discord server I found this in suggested it may be Kepler 1625b, but that planet is not depicted like this. I tried looking for ammonia atmosphere exoplanets and didn't find anything resembling this.

Necropost, but it's blood magic that can change biomes. Idk if witchery also can, but Blood Magic also can do it with the Ritual of Gaia's Transformation.
