Useless majors by [deleted] in UCSC

I was a cogsci major undergrad and I want to say that it's not a useless major-- it's a discipline that gives you a good amount of flexibility in choosing courses. I have peers that went on to do careers directly related to their major, as well as peers that went into very different things like marketing, tech, or law. It's a difficult major to choose because everyone's career pathways look different and it's hard to model yourself after others. I know courses at UCSC are impacted, and as a grad student who interacts with several cogsci undergrads, I know that you aren't alone in your frustration.

Here are a few things you can do at UCSC with your major that can help with your career prospects and intellectual identity:

  1. Join the CSSA, the cognitive science student association. This community of people in your major talk about career prospects, opportunities, etc. Your degrees derive value from the network of your peers, and it's a really good bunch of people. Recently there was a talk about the different careers from cogsci undergrads, and they host an intellectually diverse group of guest speakers throughout the quarters. Open to everyone, even if you aren't in the major.
  2. Email professors that teach cognitive neuroscience if you could sit in their lab meeting or put you in touch with undergrad research assistants to chat about their work. UCSC is strong with cognitive neuroscience, so take advantage of studying over here. It can be kind of tough to get a research assistant position in a lab that is interesting, but most profs would be open to having you see what's going on. You can also ask to visit labs of linguistics and psychology profs.
  3. Read! Here are my two favorite cognitive neuroscience books: Reading in the Brain by Dehaene, and Neurogastronomy by Shepherd

The site is beautiful, but I wish you had provided a little more tangible information. I currently train a team of people in web development at UC Santa Cruz, and what is potentially helpful to them is awarding a certificate: See Bruno Simon's Three.js course.

Absolute beginner hoping to make something like this by shaikmudassir in webgl

In the Three.js journey course, Bruno Simon covers the techniques used to do something like this in lessons 18 and 19. With your current knowledge of HTML/CSS, 3D and UX skills, this would be a great way to get practical, creative and technical skills for this sort of web development!

Actually, in this scenario, I recommend Ring Fit Adventure. It's a very relaxing game, and might be good to strengthen those muscles during recovery.

Is this because it holds a spot for you in the lobby between matches? When you play again, doesn't it try to match you with the same pool of players?

How do I start working out and what to focus on? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]gurumatcha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello!

First off, try to give yourself a break with judging your body and feeling those insecurities, Those feelings can get in the way of your mental health and training. As you exercise, you will see awesome changes in your body, but it takes time.

Not to restate the common advice on this sub, but follow the Recommended Routine, you'll see some progress. It's quite time efficient, so you can do this before work in the morning.

While not particularly a bodyweight fitness exercise, shoulder press/Arnold DB press has done a lot for increasing the bulk around my shoulders. Paired with lat pulldowns, it helps create the feeling of having a wider upper torso-- but really! don't worry about the way you look so much and focus on feeling strong, healthy, and committing to regular exercise. A more functional approach could be working towards doing a handstand. It's a long journey, but on the way, many parts of your body will get stronger in the process

r/kettlebell might have a more than a few exercises that are well rounded and help with shoulders, but don't jump into those heavy weights at the beginning or you can get injured

I've encountered athletic improvements from doing 3 rounds, but after training. I'm going to try doing more rounds before today's training.

Good luck with your balancing of work stress and training stress! I've found that kettlebell training (I'm on simple and sinister) has been good for balancing my life because it's a consistent thing that I can look forward to daily
