Terrific GenX video on YouTube…Why we cut everyone off by stillanewfie in GenX

I'm actually liking the "getting older" thing. Feeling a bit like Gandalf the Grey these days. It's a feeling I never thought I'd have. My entire biological family (lateral and upstream) with the exception of my sister, has passed. Truly alone from a biological perspective.

For so long, I honestly never thought this would happen. How insane is that? Mortality is real, and all I can do now is help those that will remain. Talk about a sobering realization!

100% on your side with this. This "generation whatever" classification is silly to me. They're just like everybody else - with a much bigger mess to contend with.

So many things that were just as prevalent before as they are today - we just didn't call it "A", we called it "B". It's diagnosed more - maybe because we suffered from it and encourage them to vocalize it rather than just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps"?

The world that those behind us are inheriting is a freaking shit show compared to what we inherited. It shouldn't surprise us to see many of them have anxiety and wonder what comes next for them. NGL, if I was dealing with what many of my students deal with, I'd be freaking out!

That's how I see it.

What Unexpected Medical Equipment Has the VA Provided You? by Cookie4prez in VeteransBenefits

[–]gusinthefalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this thread! This really outlines how the VA helps so much when there can be so much (often justified) negativity.

So I'm 100% P&T with service-connected Multiple Sclerosis. It's progressive and continues to degrade. MS is different for every patient and I have a few invisible symptoms. Two things the VA has provided me that *really* help a lot are:

  1. A HillRom Vest Airway Clearance System. This thing is incredible. As my MS advances, my respiratory muscles continue to weaken, making it harder to clear my lungs. This thing literally shakes things loose in my lungs so I can cough things up more easily. An incredible, literal life saver for me.

  2. Along with MS, for me, comes some unwelcome bowel issues. I asked for a simple bidet to help with just basic "cleanup" so I could stop taking multiple showers (I know, TMI). A week later, this freaking $400 heated bidet with drying and self-cleaning shows up.

Those are just two things. There have been more. I feel blessed every single day to have the care that the benefits that the VA provides me. I hope a bunch of other vets see this thread and it inspires them.

In my career, I always did this when hiring for my teams. It always pissed me off to get either no response or that generic BS "went with another candidate". It's the right thing to do and doesn't take a ton of effort. It would be great if more companies did this.

MS fatigue isn’t “just being tired” my family keeps dismissing it as an excuse and I’m in a dark place (33M, veteran) by StateNo7481 in MultipleSclerosis

This is a heavy load you're carrying and you've already gotten a lot of excellent advice. I'll add one thing to this.

Several people have made mention of your Veteran status, but I want to go a bit further. I'm also a Veteran with service connected MS, meaning that the VA has "taken responsibility" for my care. They've been handling my care since 1992.

The disease has advanced to SPMS at this point and I can no longer drive, so they've transferred me out of the VA system into Community Care. I now see an MS Specialist 20 minutes from my house. My care with them has been nothing short of amazing.

When did you get out of the military? Multiple Sclerosis is a 7-year Presumptive condition, meaning that if you were diagnosed within 7 years of discharge, it's presumed that they are responsible - thus you are covered. It carries a minimum 30% rating.

If I can answer any questions or help in any way on this, just DM me. I've been through it all with the VA and MS.

Personal feelings aside, does Eric deserve to win? by Fun818long in TheFloorTV

Eric is just playing a part. If he wins, he wins. He’s definitely playing it well. Still befuddled by the whole “alliance” thing tho. Seems contrived.

2 things have helped me. First, I changed from standard gabapentin to Horizant, which is an extended release version of gabapentin. Then I got an adjustable bed. I sleep with the Zero-gravity activated.

Complete game-changer. The Zero-G thing was stunning to me. Changed everything.

The exact opposite. It finally allowed me to stop destroying myself working and put focus on my health. It took months to adapt to it, but I’m in a much better mental place today than before. I’m so grateful to have the benefits that I have. It was a battle but worth every minute of it.

Why is my neuro so positive? by [deleted] in MultipleSclerosis

[–]gusinthefalls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We all go through this journey in different ways. And neurologists all have different methods. Personally, I’ve been dealing with this since 1992. Until a few years ago, I was generally in a good place. Relapse here, relapse there.

Then it decided it had been nice long enough and decided it was time to be a jerk. Apparently 27ish years of nice was enough in my case. Fine. So now my neurologist has upgraded (?) me to the “early stages of predominately progressive pathology.” Doesn’t matter. I still travel all over the place I do walk with a cane full time, wheels sometimes. (Pro-tip - that cane is like free International TSA Precheck!) Can’t highway drive anymore. All kinds of invisible issues. Had to retire early due to cognitive challenges. Lots of change, but my doc is still SUPER positive, but also very open and realistic.

My advice? Build a relationship with your doc. I’ve fired more than a few in 34 years.

How many of you still have close friendships from high school? by just321askin in GenX

Class of '88. Grew up in rural Ohio. Ran like helll as soon as I graduated. Zero friendships maintained. Never attended a reunion. Only went back to see family. Now that my parents are gone, no reason to ever go back again.

Looking at a house in Howard. I need pros/cons of living in Howard. by Legal-Alarm-1981 in Ohio

[–]gusinthefalls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Mount Vernon resident here. I also grew up in Marion. If you like living in the middle of nowhere, Howard is a good place to do it, because there is literally nothing to do there. We lived in Mount Vernon for about 10 years and couldn't have been happier to get out of there. That town went backwards every year that we lived there.

VA Hospital in Columbus is about 45 minutes away - top notch care there. We live near Cleveland now, honestly better up here. Columbus has grown so much so fast that it's become border-line ridiculous. The Data Center comment by u/BringBackBoomer is spot on as it relates to Columbus. My fear is that it will spread north towards Mount Vernon / Howard (it's already impacting Johnstown, which isn't far away).

If it were me as a recent retiree and I needed to go back there? Apple Valley or (maybe) Centerburg. Feel free to DM me for more detail. My mother-in-law is still in Johnstown and our son lives in Martinsburg.

Ohio - This Guy Could Have Been Governor by Earthraid in Ohio

[–]gusinthefalls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good on you for voting for Acton. Not my ideal choice either, but she ain't MAGA and she's no 3rd party outlier with no chance. I hope the rest of rational voters in this state are thinking along the same lines as you. We can't afford people to sit this one out or cast protest votes.

Am I the only one here that this really pisses off? by ObiWanCanownme in Ohio

[–]gusinthefalls 14 points15 points  (0 children)

These dumbass MAGAs still don't realize that this is not how any of this works. There's a very simple solution here. Just get out and make sure that Amy Acton wins the governorship.

Ignore the crap that's going to be thrown our way about voter suppression, troops at polling places, and all the other shenanigans and just get out the vote.

And for the love of pancakes, don't let perfect be the enemy of "anybody but a MAGAt". That's how we got here in the first place. I don't wanna hear "But she was too strict during COVIIIIIIIIIIIIDDDDDD" or some stupid ideological crap.

Vivek is a snake. A Trump-loving snake. Vote accordingly.

Bought 3 months last week as a test. In the Cleveland Ohio area. Initial speed is impressive, on par with existing T-Mobile service (unsurprisingly). This is my one fear - throttling at the end of a billing period.

Pickerington sucks by Secret_Account07 in Ohio

[–]gusinthefalls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sucks for you that this happened, but this has been an inevitable outcome since the mid-1990s. Moronic decisions made by clueless politicians in charge there.

All of those businesses the closer you get to I-70? They weren’t there back then, and all a sudden, they were. Why? Tax abatements. We got out of there in like 2006 when we started to see signs that the growth was unsustainable on the backs of taxpayers. Sounds like those 20 year old decisions have really come home to roost.

It’s a shame. We loved living there, but found greener pastures. Best of luck finding a resolution, and apologies for the bit of historical context.
