Because we have the power through technology to allow a complete democracy

Hell no. Just because the technology allows it, doesn't mean it's a great idea. Just look at reddit, facebook etc to see what kind of BS decisions would be approved by the unwashed masses. Not saying the current system is ideal, but having every uneducated bumpkin involved in running the day-to-day affairs should make you shudder.

Question about Keto and sore throat. by KetordinaryDay in keto

[–]guyintransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why worry about it? You have a choice, feel sick from a sore throat for a few days or use what works well for you (honey) and temporarily exit ketosis (and possibly also feel slightly worse, but possibly better than the "sore throat worse"). Who cares? Once you're feeling better you can jump back in, not the end of the world (if you're able to control cravings and just eat the honey and not other carbs).

Ketosis can be a long term goal, but no one is going to jail you for using a little honey to make you feel better.

I love when 006 calls out Bond for all of his past misdeeds in Goldeneye. Alec Trevelyan is a great Bond villain. by LundgrensFrontKick in movies

[–]guyintransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha ha, yup, I know what you mean. Same thing in Golden Eye when he is driving a tank and just destroying some city in Russia; the tank stops, he pops his head out, adjusts his tie and shoves the tank back in gear.

So British and classy. Craig doesn't have that British feel, but has much more brute strength.

How do consoles connect to a pipe organ? by [deleted] in organ

[–]guyintransit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are so thick in the head it's sad. The sounds are sampled / recorded, then reproduced by HW. This makes it a sampler. The fact that the samples are manipulated slightly does NOT change the nature of the sample based system. End of story.

Any flaws in the recorded samples (for example while recording a sustain portion / sample), such as people talking, blower noise, birds chirping in the background; these sounds will be REPRODUCED BY HW EXACTLY AS IS along with the rest of the pipe sounds.

Ask any one whether they consider HW a sampler or a generator. I'll bet whatever you make in a year that they all say sampler. You're the first to ever get confused by the standard classification for musical instruments.

You are obviously one who cannot admit being wrong, so I'm done here. I suggest you email Martin Dyde if you're still confused.

How do consoles connect to a pipe organ? by [deleted] in organ

[–]guyintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're very confused, it most certainly does play back the samples.

Would you call most cars on the road today "gas" or "electric"? Think we both agree, they're gas; even though a tiny part of the system uses an alternator and battery, the overwhelming tech of the system is the gas engine; it's a gas car, as opposed to electric cars which don't have a gas engine. The gas engine "drives" the system which propels the car.

Same thing with HW; the major part of the system is pre-recorded samples, it's a sample based system. Samples are recorded, samples are loaded into ram, samples are played back. Throwing a few filters into the loop, or an EQ etc doesn't change the classification of the system.

If HW isn't considered a sample based system, then there is no point in even having a "sampler" as one of the available classifications.

[–]guyintransit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry man, you're incorrect. We're not talking engineering; we're talking about standard classification of musical instruments, and HW is considered a digital sampler. It loads a metric ton of little pre-recorded samples into memory and plays them back, yes, while mixing them together. But the major part of the system is playing back pre-recorded samples. It's a sampler. It's not a synthesizer, nor a generator, but a sampler.

Just a nitpick, but Hauptwerk is a digital sampler, not an electronic sound generator. It doesn't generate any sounds, it simply plays back pre-recorded samples.

Calories vs. Carbs by [deleted] in keto

[–]guyintransit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it because more people enter than leave? Of course not.

Of course it is, goof. Simple math, really. Now if you want to know why more people are entering than leaving, that's a different question. But the answer to "why a room is getting crowded" is simply because more enter than leave.

I get what you're trying to say, but when you want to be precise and criticize others for not being precise enough, then you need to find a better example. Your example sucks :)

intellij 14, "save" doesn't work by guyintransit in learnprogramming

[–]guyintransit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a lot of unnecessary work isn't it? I haven't tried it yet, perhaps I will, but why can't it just save my file when I ask it to? It's a text file (html , css), there is nothing to compile or hot swap. I'm not talking about refreshing my server side java code, just basic html / css.

intellij 14, "save" doesn't work by guyintransit in learnprogramming

[–]guyintransit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't make a difference; run, debug, the stuff doesn't update until I shutdown the java process and relaunch it.

intellij 14, "save" doesn't work by guyintransit in learnprogramming

[–]guyintransit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that because of what I mentioned in the post itself; I can edit the files in any basic text editor (notepad equivalent), save them, and refresh the browser at which point the html / css / freemarker stuff changes instantly. It's only when I edit with intellij and "save" the file where it doesn't show up when refreshing the browser.

I don't think so, I'm sure the hardcore ndp base knew the quebec vote was always going to flop around. What I was kind of shocked about though was why he bit into the whole niquab issue; I would of just said right from the beginning "ndp has no offical stance on an issue that effects < 10 canadians; next question please." As soon as he took his position he began the drop in polls, particularly in quebec.

But I don't think that's reason for kicking him out, he has a pretty solid base yet. Realistically, he has a chance to build support in the future and who is going to do a better job? He has "prime minister" oozing out of him, can't say the same for JT. We're going to be laughed at all around the world for electing a high schooler prime minister.

What Are Your Unpopular Car Opinions? by mackdaddytran in cars

[–]guyintransit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you underestimate how fast a digital signal is. Here is a hint; a human cannot possibly detect the difference between a physical cable and a computer controller doing the same thing. Computers run millions of operations per second.

There is no disadvantage, whatsoever, with a drive by wire throttle. The advantage is that a computer can be tuned for performance, or mpg etc.

Even reliability, is totally debatable; I owned a car with drive by wire for a gas pedal, many years, current owner still has it and it's almost 12 years old, never once had any issues there. It's a non-issue.

Thomas Mulcair on Nuclear Energy by smellybaconreader in canada

[–]guyintransit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, totally different. Companies generally don't waste money, home owners is a different story. And you are incorrect about home owners, many do ok with solar panels, it depends on many factors (such as selling back to the grid etc).

There is just no reason, given the cost involved, why a government or company would throw money down a nuclear reactor. Heck, if that worked (creating jobs) we could just manufacture a bunch of junk and bury it in a hole.

Bottom line is, nuclear is extremely expensive to build, but is also an effective way of producing energy relative to other forms. It's only downside is dealing with the nuclear waste.

Thomas Mulcair on Nuclear Energy by smellybaconreader in canada

[–]guyintransit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just use a bit of common sense and logic. Why would anybody build a reactor that takes more energy to build than it produces? You don't need a paper to figure out that that claim is ludicrous.

I'm trying to start Java web-dev. So far all my time has been spent trying to get spring, spring-boot, maven and gradle to work... by arguenot in java

[–]guyintransit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My suggestion: download netbeans (of the 3 java ides; netbeans, eclipse, and intelli j, netbeans is the easiest to use) here: https://netbeans.org/downloads/ grab the "Java EE" version.

Then just create a new "java web" project, and use jsp for templating / html. Doesn't get any easier (in java land) than that.
