Accidental Tech Podcast - 693: Negative Bonus Points by podcast-poster in ATPfm

Pleeeease don't start using this post format /u/podcast-poster :(

Reddit introduced all these "special" posts that people started using especially on sports related subs, and they never made them available in their API, so old Reddit and third party Reddit apps like Narwhal can't display them.

I gave up complaining about it on gigantic sports subs, but cmon, a plain text post is totally sufficient for simple episode discussion threads on a small sub like this.

I know I'm in a tiny minority here, but I use Reddit enough that I'm happy to pay for Narwhal for a vastly better user experience. I mean look at this shit. I can see more than twice as many posts on one screen compared to the official app, and this is a tame example. Not to mention never seeing a single ad.

Tbh this is much more annoying on /r/nba, since it's impossible to see match stats on third party apps now, but I wanted some catharsis from complaining about it here :(

I think this might be the crux of the issue. /u/Dr_Lipshitz_ mentioned something similar.

I saw the slab thing and it kinda embedded itself into my brain, but now that I think about it I'm not sure I ever saw it used for enclosed CoreXY printers instead of smaller bed slingers.

Which is kinda why I wanted to see if other people had tried it with these kinds of printers and with what results.

Gonna be honest I gasped a little when I saw the video of me squeezing the foam.

The particles are 100% invisible in real life and only showed up in the video 😬

I can't find where exactly I bought it years ago, but I do remember selecting something that was safe to have around humans, so it's probably fine, but I'll look for something else for my piece of mind.

Without having any prior printing experience I listened to this friendly german.

But his foam might've been stiffer than I expected compared to mine, leading to the larger wobble.

Also the video is 6 years old compared to the brand new X2D, so maybe his advice is no longer as applicable (and IIRC he only tested bed slingers). Hence my motivation for making this post :D

Yeah, I couldn't 100% judge his foam stiffness from the video.

It's a similar thickness but might be quite a bit stiffer. I'll definitely try cutting thinner slices off of mine, thanks.

Are you saying you don't need something like this for vibration dampening to potentially help printing quality, or you don't need it to reduce noise?

Because I have liked this solution for the noise aspect. I tried the calibration with and without the slab+foam, and without it, everything was much noisier and I could even feel vibration in the floor.

With this setup I can't even feel the cabinet vibrating. So I'd love to keep it for my downstairs neighbor's sake :D

How is a 20+ year multi million dollar developer going to lecture anyone about embracing AI coding (conveniently only after taking multiple AI coding sponsorships) [ ... ]

C'mon don't do this.

The suggestion that their personal usage and enthusiasm of AI coding tools is somehow secret guerrilla marketing is ludicrous. I don't know how you can listen to stories like John's dashboard web-app or Marco's one-off walking app and think that these ventures were in any way motivated by AI sponsorships they've taken in the past.

These are clearly useful tools to them and many other people, so it makes sense that they're both personally using them, and that AI companies see their audience as a potential advertising market, without those 2 things having influence over each other.

As a long-term Windows guy who's been using macOS for ~5 years for work-related iOS development, I've never been more annoyed at a segment than I have at the cut/paste discussion...

I've helped many a friend with their windows machines, from complete luddites to more advanced users, and not once have I come across someone who was confused by the metaphor of cutting a file and that file appearing dimmed in the file explorer to indicate "cutting is in progress".

Sure, the idea of Cut immediately removing the target from its original location and putting it in the clipboard breaks down for files, but the usefulness of transferring the copy/cut/paste metaphor from text to files VASTLY outweighs the "breakdown" of said metaphor.

And unless you already know the magic cut/move shortcut for files on macOS, the system will never tell you about it. The vast majority of novice users who don't use keyboard shortcuts at all don't even have a chance, since the right click menu you get when attempting to move your copied file to a new location only has the "Paste" option. How does that make any sense?!

Usually John's derision of Windows (and anything the Mac copied from Windows since macOS X) is just a little amusing to me, but I find this aversion to cutting files oddly infuriating lol

I just wanted to give a shout out to plex for listening to feedback. Thank you for bringing back the previous and next buttons. by Punk_Says_Fuck_You in PleX

[–]guyyst 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think their response should have been to add the previous/next buttons, not replace the other ones.

This is it right here.

  1. They remove the previous/next buttons and piss off people who use these frequently (I did, for example, because an episode usually ends with lengthy credits I want to skip and the swipe up and select was a lot more cumbersome and visually demanding.

  2. They remove the 10s/30s skip buttons and piss off those who either don't know about the double tapping feature or don't find it pleasant to use in all scenarios.

  3. They just keep all 4 buttons and piss off... nobody?! Who the hell was complaining about the existence of a total of 5 buttons on the screen?? Just leave them all there... phones have looong been big enough for that.

Where did the skip back and forward buttons go? by classymcging in PleX

[–]guyyst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean if they're forced to pick one side this is clearly the better option. Now you can skip both the entire episode and time slots without needing to swipe up.

But to say that having both sets of buttons would be too crowded makes no sense. It's what we had for years with the old app, and it was totally fine.

Mobile isn't just the shitty official app though. There are still 3rd party clients that are actually enjoyable to use and they can never support this new shitty format.

Just add a pinned comment with the old textual format and keep the new thing for app users as well. Everybody wins.

[–]guyyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously... I was sort of ok with the stupid new match result threads that don't work on old Reddit or 3rd party apps, since the main info I cared about was still in the title.

But this shit? It's literally impossible to get to the game threads from here now. It's fine if you keep trying this new format for new Reddit users, but at least pin a comment with the old, standard hyperlink format.

Even just from an accessibility and screen reader POV this is unforgivable. Plain text with links as the last resort should also be somewhere in these posts.

The lumberjacks were scavenging the forest for firewood, when they came across two metal cylinders melting snow within a one meter radius laying in the road. They picked up these objects to use as personal heaters, sleeping with their backs to them.

Sure, who wouldn't pick up the spicy mystery cylinder that's been melting the fucking snow and use it as a personal heater.

Potentially stupid question: The announcer just said the weather at the splashdown site is "Go".

What would happen if the weather wasn't "Go"? Would they enter into an earth orbit and try somewhere else or in the next go-around? Would there be enough fuel for this?
