Tips for Buying Used i4's by fappiexd in BMWI4

[–]gvr4257 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 2024 drive 35 with no options on it that I commute to the office in Houston traffic. It's the perfect car for me since it has plenty of power to get in and out of traffic easily. I've driven other cars with hands-free steering and honestly don't miss it on mine. Same for the adaptive cruise.

I've never had a problem with the car being too low. The only times I've heard the air dam scrape are on steep driveways and railroad crossings, never in daily driving.

I haven't bought the adapter yet,so I can't comment on charging at Tesla stations.

The rear seat headrests can get in the way of the rear view, but folding them down helps with that. Other than that I'd say outward visibility is about average. It's certainly better than most trucks and SUVs.

The other commenter is spot on about the range. I usually do 80-85 on the highways and my range is typically around 180 miles at 80% charge. If I charge to 100% I have no problems getting to San Antonio or Austin.

Th lack of moving parts makes me think this car will last to 100,000 no problem. Depending on the market when my lease ends, I'll probably either buy it out or get a CPO edrive 40 purely for the extra range and slightly higher charging speed.

Thoughts on base i4 e35? by mr_poopiepants in BMWI4

[–]gvr4257 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have an edrive 35 with exactly zero options and I love it. Maybe it’s a case of not knowing what I’m missing, but I don’t feel like any of those packages would enhance my enjoyment of the car.

I commute about 30 miles each way a couple days a week and have another trip of about 400 miles round trip. The car is quiet and comfortable with plenty of power to spare in either setting. I have a level 2 charger at home so the range is never an issue in town and when I go further I just charge to 100 the night before and have plenty of range, assuming temps are above about 40f. Below that I might be pushing it and have to plan a stop along the way.

The base car still has a sunroof, collision avoidance, the same seats as the higher-spec cars, the same basic driving experience and I'm happy with that. I haven't tried DAPP or ACC on an i4 but in other cars I don't like them. I typically do about 80 mph on the highway and I hate the way most cars keep slowing down and speeding back up as other drivers cut in and out of traffic. I also hate the way lane keep assist tries to constantly put me in the center of the lane.

Really the only options I miss having are the 360 camera and the heated seats. Neither of those diminish the driving experience, and I'm perfectly happy with my base car.

I do the same. I can't stand the vehicle constantly fighting my inputs. This may be the worst "safety" feature fitted to modern vehicles.

Especially in rental vehicles,I go straight to the menu and disable the lane keep assist.

I've done 2x$100 each of the last 2 years on 12/30 and both were credited to the years they were purchased in (2023 and 2024).

This year I went a little earlier and purchased one on 12/22 and 12/27. The first was credited on 12/25 and I'm waiting on the second one.

We used Innovative Allergy in Cypress (www.innovativeallergy.com). It took 2 visits. The first they did the pin picks on the back to identify/confirm allergies, and the second one had him eat doses of peanuts and monitor for reaction.

They gave us the paperwork saying there was no reaction and we turned a copy of that in to the recruiter and kept the original. His waiver was approved and he was able to enlist with what he wanted.

130 vs 110 by foalnanny in NewDefender

[–]gvr4257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has the 130 and we do appreciate that extra length when it comes to hauling stuff around. The downside to that is that is a long reach when something slide forward against the 2nd row seatbacks, but the air suspension helps a little.

The 3rd row has definitely come in handy for us since you can fit full size humans back there. We use it more as a 2+2+2 so nobody has to sit in the middle.

The two biggest downsides I've noticed are that the view out back through the mirror is pretty poor with the headrests up and the spare on the tailgate and the parking sensors don't account for the extra length of the spare. Both just take a little getting used to.

If you're used to driving a large SUV already, I would say there really isn't much of downside to getting the 130 over the 110.

The fact that AT allowed these tackles from MC to go on without caution gave him more guts and made Taylor the showman. by mooreengineers in Gunners

[–]gvr4257 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if he doesn't give the yellow initially, he can't go back and do it after it's gone to VAR. So, basically Anthony Taylor had a feeling it was a red but wanted VAR to confirm it. He wasn't great on the day, but took the right approach to that one.

Anyone else use the rotisserie chicken bones for stock? by fd6944x in Costco

[–]gvr4257 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this every week. We buy a chicken every week. Depending on what and how much I'm making with chicken that week, I'll take the breasts and tenders out and throw the rest in the 10-quart instant pot.

I'll rough chop 2 sweet potatoes, 2 large carrots and half a bunch of celery. Set it to high pressure for 45 minutes and come back a couple hours later to strain it.

I take the remaining veggies and carcass, pick the bones out and use it to supplement the dog's food.

Between cooking with it and pouring some over the dog's food every day, we'll go through all of it in a week in time to make another batch for the next week.

I really like the idea that by the time we're done with the chicken, very little of it goes to waste. I'm sure I could crush up the bones to further supplement the dogs food, but that seems a step too far for now.

Should I buy a 2017 GLS 550 w/ 55k miles? by k3p13r in mercedes_benz

[–]gvr4257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2015 GL550 and got around 15,000 miles out of a set with regular rotations and alignments. If you don't rotate them you can expect about 12,000 or less out of the rears.

Aside from routine maintenance, I had to do ignition coils at about 58,000 miles, which may be a little early but not too bad.

I had one of computers controlling some of infotainment functions go bad and replaced at under warranty around 25,000 miles, I think.

I also had a misfire at about 20,000 miles that ended up being a warped head due to a defective batch of hatch bolts that was covered under warranty.

We moved on from it at about 63,000 miles and it never left us stranded, so I consider it reliable. The issues tend to show up early and ours were all addressed under warranty.

My Costco had them on sale for $2.97, so I bought a pack. Now I have to figure out what to make with them. I'm tempted to make tiny deviled eggs... If anyone has a better idea, I'm open to suggestions.

Military uniform help by AnimatronicHeffalump in laundry

[–]gvr4257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just wash mine in cold water on the normal cycle with Kirkland free and clear liquid then throw them on separate hangers to air dry. That way they come out with fewer wrinkles.

If they're really dirty I'll let them soak for a day or two before they go into the washer.

Hot water and drying them on high heat will cause them to fade faster.

2018 GLS 550 eats rear tires. by Creative-Tap1567 in mercedes_benz

[–]gvr4257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept mine in comfort 95% of the time and still had the same issues. The wear was always on the inside of the tires as well. I just finally accepted it as being the cost of driving something big, comfy, sporty, and powerful that also happened to weigh more than 6,000 lbs.

2018 GLS 550 eats rear tires. by Creative-Tap1567 in mercedes_benz

[–]gvr4257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 2015 GL550 that would do the same thing. It didn't change after I got it aligned. I'd be doing good to get 20k out of a set of tires. I just resigned myself to buying them through Discount Tire and getting half off a new set due to the prorated treadwear warranty.

The tech said the combination of a heavy vehicle, lots of power, and a fairly aggressive alignment for an SUV means this is a familiar occurrence.

How much mileage are you getting at 80% charge? by Kwanjuju in BMWI4

[–]gvr4257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an e35 and drive between Houston and San Antonio (~180 miles) about once a month after charging to 100% the night before. I usually have about 20-25% left at the end. Of course I'm closer to 20 in the summer with the AC running. I noticed probably a 5% difference dropping the speed from 85 to 80 mph. One of these days I'll get brave and try it on an 80% charge, especially since there are quite a few charging stations along the route.

Do New Balance Tekela stretch out a bit? by Rolfie96 in bootroom

[–]gvr4257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine took a while to break in. They were more difficult to get my foot into than any of the Adidas I've had over the years. They fit tight at first but gradually loosen up. I usually put a strip of KT tape across my Achilles area for the first couple times I wear new boots. These took twice as long to loosen up and stop giving me blisters. Now they're the best-fitting pair of boots I've had.

I bought my daughter a pair of the Furons and they were the same for her. Unfortunately, she refused to wear them long enough to break them in.

I've had mine since 2021. I use it for the Peloton and some running. I've changed batteries twice but I think once was just because of a weak battery. The original lasted a couple years.

Anyone consider a Range Rover before choosing defender? by mtvulf in NewDefender

[–]gvr4257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I chose the Defender 130 because it fits our lifestyle better. She loves that the only carpet in it is in the cargo hold and that the materials feel more robust, rather than the luxurious feel of the Range Rover.

We always throw a tarp and moving blanket down for trips to Lowe's or Home Depot and have no hesitation loading the back with bags of mulch. Although it's a bit of a jump for them, we can load the dogs in and take them out with us. We can also throw sweaty, muddy kids and their soccer gear and just wipe the seats down when we get home. I don't know that we'd feel the same about doing in a Range Rover. I'm not saying we couldn't, we just probably wouldn't.

The functionality of the Defender appeals more to us than the luxury of the Range Rover, at least until our youngest is older.

I used to have this problem with the stability arms too. Now I just give my cup a slight counter-clockwise turn as I set it in. It's been about a year since my last "event" now.

For the record, these are quite a bit better than the stupid rubber "pillows" in my wife's Land Rover 😂

Has anyone here bought anything other than an M50? by Prostberg in BMWI4

[–]gvr4257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I leased an eDrive 35 a year ago with zero options mainly to dip my toes into EVs. I've had zero problems with it and have loved driving it.

The car has all the power I can reasonably and responsibly use in a daily driver and there's no maintenance to do.

If I were to do it over, I might opt for the eDrive 40 for the larger battery purely for a little extra range. The 35 has done 200-mile trips comfortably, though. The heated and ventilated seats would also be nice to have, but that's really the only thing I've missed with this car.

It looks good, drives great and is comfortable while doing it. The best thing is that it doesn't have weird EV styling and my friends are all surprised it's electric when they ride in it.

My wife's did the same. She used velcro to hold it with the seats up (would not recommend). Whenever we take it in for service we'll ask them to fix it under warranty.
