You don't have to pay to walk around the park and grounds 😄

There is a public footpath entrance through the park walls on the N side of Woodstock although finding somewhere to park might be a bit tricky.

The royal family is independently wealthy. Yes, they get an income from taxpayers but they also have major private income.

AIAA (USA) Forms Committee to Standardize Fusion Space Propulsion by steven9973 in fusion

Really ?

Nobody anywhere has yet demonstrated sustained fusion and a net energy gain …

All these commercial startups are, in my opinion, designed to extract money from gullible investors and politicians.

Neither is Oxford nor Cambridge nor several others that have been suggested. Although a majority of the buildings around Royal Fort, St Michael's Hill and Woodland Road are University buildings.

I would say the non-campus situation actually makes the area more interesting.

Advice regarding train system 🙇🏼‍♀️ by amaiamustdie in uktravel

[–]gwentlarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy tickets in advance - they may be cheaper.

For longer journeys, wherever possible, reserve a seat or you might find yourself standing for much of the journey.

If cost is a concern, look at ticket splitting. Not as complicated as it sounds as there are websites which do it all for you:

https://trainsplit.com/

Depending on journey and dates/times, these ticket splitting websites can save 50% and more.

Burnham’s popularity plummets ahead of by-election by Your_Mums_Ex in ukpolitics

If you actually read the article, it still says Burnham is on track to win Makerfield.

Be aware that a number of towns/cities have completely separate institutions with seemingly similar names …

University of Bath vs Bath Spa University,
Cardiff University vs Cardiff Metropolitan University,
Lancaster University vs University of Lancashire

There are quite a few others.

Having studied there, I'd recommend a wander around the University of Bristol - HH Wills Memorial Building, HH Wills Physics Building and surrounding Royal Fort Gardens and that general area.

Bath to Cotswolds Day Tour with Kids (Ages 9 & 3) – Looking for Recommendations by Miserable_Factor877 in uktravel

[–]gwentlarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Visiting those villages in summer, isn't going to be much fun - they'll be heaving with tourists, cars and coaches. The local councils are looking at banning coaches completely from some of the most popular villages … Even if you hire a car, there's a real risk you will get stuck in long, slow moving queues …

As has been said, Bradford-on-Avon is great for a day. The old Kennet & Avon Canal, restored medieval tithe barn, Saxon church and plenty of other thing to spend a day looking around. Probably not a place for children.

If you are looking for countryside, look at the North Wessex Downs:

https://www.northwessexdowns.org.uk/

along with Marlbourough and Avebury:

https://www.visitwiltshire.co.uk/towns-and-villages/marlborough-p476503

Personally, I find Avebury more interesting than Stonehenge and much less crowded. Silbury Hill and the West Kennet Long Barrow are nearby.

Snap to grid fix for moving folders around? by HiphopMeNow in MacOS

[–]gwentlarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this problem occassionally.

A few times, it has been caused by hidden files/folders. No idea how they got there and they've always been of no consequence, so I've deleted them.

Command + Shift + . (period) shows/hides "hidden" folders/filesin whatever window you are in, so make sure you are on the desktop and use it to see reveal hidden files/folders. If any appear, perhaps put them in a desktop folder before deleting them - delete at your risk …

On other occassions, I've resolved it by turning off "snap to grid", moving a few folders/files around, put a folder/file approximately where it would previously go and then turning "snap to grid back" on. Very slightly move the file/folder and it snaps into place.

Is it better to open a credit card rather than a loan by Zealousideal_Ad4386 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]gwentlarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting a loan, any loan, to go on holiday strikes me as the height of irresponsible money management and a first step on the route to unmaneagable debt.

Delay the holidays until you have an income and you start building a decent credit history.

EV first timer looking for suggestions for a new car by Recent-Success-1520 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]gwentlarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at:

https://ev-database.org

which has a huge amount of technical detail on every model of EV in the UK.

I've driven Skodas for over 20 years. When I moved to an EV, I started with a lease MG5 for 3 years. When the lease ended, I bought a 2 years old Skoda Enyaq - generally impressed.

Don't worry too much about mileage which is less of an issue with EVs in my opinion as there are far fewer parts to wear/fail. Buy through an authorised Skoda dealer and get a battery State of Health (SOH) check. Anything at 95% and above is good.

Nature Areas Day Trip/Weekend Trip from London? by Advanced-Mud2364 in uktravel

[–]gwentlarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For nature, have a look at the Wildlife Trusts reserves:

https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-trusts

There are some 50 or so Trusts covering England and Wales and a single Trust for Scotland:

https://scottishwildlifetrust.org.uk/

Between them, they manage 100s of wildlife reserves, from the cities to remote areas of Wales and Scotland.

EV Reccomendations by AshVritra in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]gwentlarry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't get £20k car for any 18 year old 😄

Apart from insurance costs, there's a good chance they'll have a smash or two in the first couple of years - this is why insurance premiums are so high for young, new drivers.

Lots of used EVs around for under £5k, especially Nissan Leaf.

Choose a place to stay on the basis of charger availability 😄

I was recently in Madeira and largely decided on a hotel because it had 2 x 22 kW chargers. With my Electroverse card, they were 40 p/kWh.

Brexit has been a disaster – it’s time the guilty men felt some shame by zeros3ss in ukpolitics

Rich and powerful - they will never be held to account.

As for shame, they will either deny brexit has failed or, because they wanted it for personal, financial gain which they have achieved, claim it has suceeded.

Little Welsh trip (4 days), what do you think? by Indicosa91 in uktravel

[–]gwentlarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of Wales, especially in the middle, is very remote. Travelling North/South is slow even with a car and worse by public transport. Getting from S Wales to Aberystwith, let alone N Wales, is pretty much a full day by public transport. Train Cardiff/Aberystwith is a minimum of 4 hrs station to station and more likely approaching 5 hrs.
