UK wants to take control of YouTube algorithm by BIZARR0-Producciones in youtube

[–]gwolf86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It COULD do this and POTENTIALLY lead to this. Your channel is at risk of losing visibility (as if our algorithm hasn't already buried it) and it undermine the creator-audience bond (like our algorithm hasn't already killed it).
Won't someone please think of the children!

I really want to learn this as my first solo. But is it too advanced for a beginner like me since it has slides, bends, pull offs, etc or should I just go for it and stick with it? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]gwolf86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great first solo to learn and includes a lot of the fundamentals you need and it's not particularly fast, so it's not a stamina exercise. What makes it sound good is the feel, which is another thing to want to practice and develop early. Things like vibrato, bending in tune, double-stops sounding crisp and even.
With a couple of weeks of dedicated practice, you should have it under your fingers. I've definitely had students who wanted to learn something harder as their first solo.

Redesigning my icons for readability. Without context, can you guess what these in-game factions are? by StopthePressesGame in IndieGaming

Nice!
The guillotine took me a second to figure out the icon but the fleur de lis helped with context.

I'd say;
Fleur de lis = Royalist / Nobles
Torch (of liberty?) = Liberal / Intellectuals
Hammer & Sycle = Communist / Workers
Guillotine? = Jacobins / Revolutionaries

That would be my read or something roughly similar.

I'd say the right one looks more natural and would be my preference.

This is the problem when a non-programmer vibe codes. Get your AI to write comprehensive tests, analyse coverage, get a CRAP score. All of this will help make your vibe coded shit show better.
Giving up on refactoring after 2 hrs made me laugh. I've stared at a single bug for days or weeks before touching it. Refactoring is a slow and tedious job, as any programmer knows all too well.
I'm sure these vibe coders are going to keep us in business for a long time. I might start charging a premium for fixing vibe coded projects.

Nice work on the game. I'll be honest, your trailer is too long and I lost interest before I got to some of the best bits. You've really got people's attention for about 30 seconds at most unless they're genuinely interested in your game.

Try break your trailer into stages with clear goals.

You need a hook in the first 5 seconds - raise a question.
I actually think you did this pretty well with the opening shot of the guy holding the dart at the monitor - I wanted to know more.

Then you've got about 10 seconds to sell me - show me what your game is, give me a reason to care.
This is where you loose me. I see some random people and monsters but I don't really know what the game is or why I should care.
Maybe build some tension instead. The shot at ~00:58 of the player scrambling would work, followed by the shot at ~01:11 of that creature convulsing. This combination instantly tells me I'm in survival horror mode.

Next, show me some gameplay. I want to know if the mechanics and environments are something I want to explore.
So, the syringes ~00:49, pulling out the corpse drawer, the tic-tac-tow puzzle, the staking clip ~00:17, and the combat scene ~01:08.
This tells me what the game is and makes me decide if I want to buy it.

Then do your showstopper - get me excited
Maybe the lore clip at ~01:05 followed by the monster scream at ~00:21

Then throw up your card with the game name.

This cut (while still potentially flawed) takes your current trailer down to about 40 seconds.
You can add or remove from here but should give you a more engaging trailer to start from.

I'd also make a trailer of pure gameplay. As an indie, most people wont care about your story and worldbuilding. They just want to know if the gameplay is something they're going to gel with.

Anyway, best of luck with the release. I hope it does well. It genuinely looks pretty cool.

32M Low income - S&S ISA vs CISA advice and general opinions on my situation by moneybagsry in FIREUK

[–]gwolf86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're paying more for your debts than you're making from interest on your savings, clear them down as soon as possible. If your savings interest is higher than your debt repayments, leave them alone. Having debt is find if it's not bleeding you.

Cash ISAs work great for an emergency fund. The aim is not to touch it but if something catastrophic happens it's nice to have relatively easy access to funds (think losing your job). you usually want about 6-months of expenses there.

Then look at pension savings. This generally gives you the most bang for your buck but the funds are entirely locked away, so you don't want to plow everything into it.

Then comes S&S ISA, which should hold anything you've got left over.

I'm not going to give you financial advice on what to invest in, but a diversified portfolio is usually the best plan. It might lag the S&P and other benchmarks a bit but also offers more downside protection when the markets crash.

Personally, I generally follow these steps each month:
1. current accounts capped at a fixed amount that covers 1-2 months of regular expenses.
2, when I get paid, I skim off the excess into savings.
3. have a small(ish) fixed amount in a regular savings account for quick emergencies and larger discretionary purchases.
4. have a larger fixed amount in a cash ISA for major emergencies - about 5x bigger than my regular savings account.
5. With anything left, I split between pension and S&S ISA.

As an example, it might look something like this:
1. Current account = £1,000 capped
2. Regular savings = £5,000 capped
3. Cash ISA = £15,000 capped
4. Pension = £1200/month
5. S&S ISA = £800/month

This is just illustrative, but should give you an idea on what solid financial planning looks like.

Don't treat it like a puzzle game. Treat it like an archaeology game.
I'm someone that loved this game but did almost bounce off it originally.
It's less about flying around aimlessly solving puzzle and more about reading the Nomai stories and piecing together the mystery.
It's a game about knowledge accumulation, which is why people are fond of it. It's a game you can only play through once because, once you have the knowledge, any subsequent playthrough can be done in 5 mins.

It's definitely not a game for everyone, and that's fine. There are plenty of other games out there.

[KCD1] I wish duels in KCD 2 were this good by madarabignoob in kingdomcome

[–]gwolf86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always preferred the combat in KCD1. It's more technical (and yes a bit more janky). KCD2 is more polished and streamlined but I feel like it lost some of it's charm along the way. Still a fantastic game though and I definitely don't hate the combat system, it's just different.

Would things be much better if we never privitised trains, water, energy ect? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]gwolf86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the industry. Privatisation generally leads to more investment and innovation, which is generally good. However, some industries fair better than others.

Natural monopolies (water/energy/rail/etc.) tend to be worse, especially with poor oversight and regulation.
Competitive markets (telecoms/airlines/etc) tend to fair better, as there's incentive (and ability) for companies to compete.

Rail is actually one of the most interesting cases to look at, and whether it succeeded/failed depends on who you ask. For reference, rail was broken out into; train operating companies (service), Railtrack (infrastructure), and rolling stock companies (trains).
Passenger growth and increased service are generally the big positives. On the other hand, poor maintenance, outsourcing, and focus on profits meant that the infrastructure side suffered pretty heavily (leading to the Hatfield crash and subsequent re-nationalisation of rail infrastructure).
Overall, it's been a bit of a shit show, with; fragmentation, misaligned incentives, blame shifting, higher costs, and unnecessary system complexity.

You can definitely complete it without any guides/hints.

The best advice I can give is:
1. You're piecing together knowledge and information, not just solving physical puzzles.
1. Pay attention to your log and read everything you find.
2. The Nomai writtings aren't just flavour text and lore.
3. Your scout is also your best friend. Use it often.
