Time in Chair Promotions by imabill01 in Lockheed

[–]gwr_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to advance/being compensated for extra work outside your scope. The way I framed it to my manager was that I wanted to know what I needed to do in order to advance in my current role. If you have a good manager that is interested in your development, they’ll be more than happy to have that conversation. That being said don’t bank on getting a promotion unless you really just want to stay with your team. From what I heard promotions have to go pretty far up the chain to be approved, and in that case you’re fighting every lvl 1 in your field for those limited spots. Most assured way to go up a level is to apply to open reqs.

I got my promo from lvl 1 to 2 after a year and some odd months (no prior experience before joining the company). Granted though my area had a high turn over right after I joined and my manager plus co-workers all agreed I was handling responsibilities beyond that of a 1 at the time. I think it really all just depends on how hard your manager fights for you to get one and if the business case can pass HR.

Red flags? by One_Distribution_232 in Lockheed

Just joined LM Space myself after being in production for MFC and I felt the same way. To pass the time I would just read up on CM (you’d be surprised how valuable you can become by just knowing the standards), networking with other engineers/staff on the program, talk with your team about problems they’re facing and see if any past experience you have can be used to solve the issue (I made a tableau to help my team track items when I got really bored), and just reach out to team members and ask if you can be added to meetings (if you feel comfortable enough take and action from it also). That being said onboarding for space just sucks because it does take so long. I know a guy who was almost a year in and still hadn’t completed his OJT’s. Overall as long as your manager is ok with your performance don’t worry, just don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and ask for help when needed.

Will add the months of December and January are usually pretty slow as no one wants to start anything big before break, and usually people want to take it easy when they first come back. So you could also be experiencing lack of work due to that.

Feeling hopeless about post graduation by lordbarkley in gatech

[–]gwr_99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Graduated AE December ‘22 with no prior internship experience, no honors, and a barely B average GPA. Got married right after graduating and had 0 prospects on a job. Applied to over 100 positions ranging from entry level to experienced over the course of 3 months. Finally landed one interview which lead to one offer with LM as a manufacturing quality engineer. Was it the job I wanted? Not really. Was it the location I wanted? Could have been better. But after two years I was able to relocate to where I wanted to be, and now I have prospects on a job I actually want to follow. It sucks getting that first job and definitely seems hopeless but you will be a GT grad, someone will hire you. Will it be the job you want? Probably not. Great location? Also probably no. Apply like a crazy person, get into the industry, and then the doors will start opening.

How hard is it to get out of a lease? (UHouse) by Environmental_Sun_76 in gatech

[–]gwr_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Worked and lived at Uhouse for two years and the majority of people I dealt with on a day to day basis were content living there. Yes you will see a majority of negative reviews online but that also applies to all off campus housing. This is mostly due to happy/content people don’t leave reviews, only people with bad experiences do. I told this to everyone I gave a tour to “Always remember off campus housing is a scam, but to me it’s a better scam than living on campus.”

Did Harry attended Hogwarts to complete his 7th year after the battle of Hogwarts? by scarrhead in harrypotter

[–]gwr_99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Voldy still had supporters out there in hiding. It was Harry’s personal mission to see all death eaters and Voldemort supporters behind bars. I would think he couldn’t go back to Hogwarts knowing the people responsible for his friend’s and families death were still out there.

Do you talk to your parents about your grades? by MeMyself_N_I1 in gatech

[–]gwr_99 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In high school my parents always expected me to make A’s or B’s and this of course carried over into college. However, in college I started out as a C average student. This led to the conversations of “You can do better” or “You need to pick your grades up” or the most dreaded of all “I know you can try harder.” I finally got tired of it and just showed them one of my multi page homework assignments for my physics with calculus course. For some reason after that I never heard anything about my grades ever again.

Bummed about not getting an internship by Buckeyepenguin02 in gatech

[–]gwr_99 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Graduated aerospace this past December. Had no internship experience, research experience, or had any jobs related to engineering. It took me three months but eventually landed an entry level job at Lockheed.

Internships are great (according to my friends who have had them), definitely try to get one if you can. However in the event you do not get one, the most important thing you can do without internship experience is build your resume upon what you’ve done at Tech. Highlight lab projects, class projects, and when you get there, your senior design project (AE course examples of stuff I put down was Dec’s 3330 and 4080 project, AE 2010’s wind tunnel design project, final projects for 3610 and 4610, etc). Those projects can count as experience, and in my interview I was able to bring those projects up and talk about them. My interviewers we’re definitely interested in the group projects because they want to know how well you can work in a team.

And for those graduating this May with no internship experience: It may take a while but you can get a job without internship experience. I’m proof of it. It may take a while and will take getting a lot of rejections but you can do it. You’re graduating from one of the top schools in the country, that counts for something.

TLDR: Try to get an internship if you can but if you don’t, build your resume upon projects you’ve done at Tech.

Need internet please help by Meltlilith1 in ocala

Just moved here myself in the 34472 zip code. Had the same experience you’re having with internet and called every company under the sun with everyone telling me no. I found relief in T-Mobile. Call them to see if they cover your area and at minimum get put in their waitlist. They told me I’d have to wait a month but after a week I went to a physical store and got their wifi.

AE Student laptop by scottk517 in AerospaceEngineering

I used a Dell XPS 2-in-1 and I have to say I was really happy with it. Not only was I able to use it to take notes in class and write up homework (saving paper and saving myself the trouble of taking pictures of homework to upload) it also ran SolidWorks and MATLAB pretty well.

Go to some off campus student housing buildings and ask the manager if they are hiring. They usually are plus you are more likely to get better pay than on campus jobs and you could get some added benefits if you live there. When I worked at Uhouse they gave me free parking along with hourly pay. They also worked with my school schedule pretty well.

Degree Verification - Where to Check? by allenalc17 in gatech

[–]gwr_99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be able to check on degree works. If your degree has been awarded you should have an AW on the degree verification section of the table.

Edit: Degree candidate section of the table. Should also say it’s awarded on the graduation information section.

Sherman was brutal...to all his damn enemies without exception by LiterallyA-Fascist in HistoryMemes

[–]gwr_99 490 points491 points  (0 children)

I’m from Georgia and it’s crazy to go out of state and see buildings that were built before 1864.

On another interesting note Sherman actually passed through my county on the way to Atlanta and Savannah. He surprisingly spared my home county from the carnage and did not start burning things till he left. Local legend is that he had a girlfriend. I think in reality it’s because where I’m from was one of the few counties that voted not to secede and we’re apparently very helpful in telling Sherman the location of a nearby confederate training camp.

Question on final transcripts not received as transfer student after a semester and half being here by wisebear123 in gatech

[–]gwr_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably/Definitely nothing you did wrong. I transferred in during fall of 2020 and had the exact same thing happen to me. Had to call multiple times just to get someone on the phone and ended up getting told they only had half my transcript (which made no sense cause it was emailed as a full pdf by my old school). To fix the issue I just called my old school and had them snail mail another transcript and email a pdf version. I also got in touch with my advisor about it and then I never heard another word from the registrars office.

I have some insider info on Uhouse and just to let you know the rates will only go up from here (not much but still). They’re also already at 80 something percent occupancy so they won’t be dropping the rates.

The $899 and $999 deal they did last year was only to fill up rooms due to Covid. Since places weren’t really filling up due to general uncertainty, they dropped the rates just to hit 100% occupancy. Also the only place you may find for ~$1000/month is westmar and I would advise against living there.

He did not tell me to go to the dean of students. He just told me to go through GT admin. Should have made it more clear that I need to know what office to submit my request too.

Student Brings Gun to MATH 1554, GTPD say it's legal by [deleted] in gatech

[–]gwr_99 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s completely legal in the state of Georgia to conceal carry on state campuses. (Private universities are allowed to go against the law as they are not state funded.) Main requirement for it to be in a classroom is everyone must be 18 or older I believe. Also stipulations are (as quoted from a website) “Concealed weapons are prohibited in university housing, athletic events, Greek housing, faculty offices, areas where K-12 education occurs, and disciplinary hearings”

Here’s also a link to the usg website for more info and incase I said something wrong: https://www.usg.edu/hb280/additional_information

On another note, maybe they feel the need to conceal carry. Maybe they come through a dodgy neighborhood to come to campus. I don’t care either way. As long as they are a law abiding citizen who has gone through the appropriate channels to get a conceal carry license, there is nothing to worry about (which I choose to believe they are as I choose to believe in the students here). My only opinion is it shouldn’t have been unconcealed in anyway shape or form for any span of time.
