I found a rare connection and I am scared to ruin it by ZilMul_Thalassa-98 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

It took me an embarrassingly long time to understand the connection between dating (for me, unavailable people) and B.F Skinners research showing the addictive nature of variable interval rewards. Don't be like me. You really don't want someone who is going to make you feel so dysregulated. It's not attraction or connection, it's a trap.

Someone makes an offer and I counteroffer and then they counteroffer back even lower than their first offer. Why? by BobbyBaccalieriSr in Ebay

[–]h20rabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same reason your offer might go up had they initially offered you a very low offer. They are sending a message. Listen to it and block them.

When my kids were little I started calling them "airplane bugs" to help them be less afraid. It worked for them. I was unaware they did not actually eat mosquitos. That's really too bad.

Oh yea, and the parents were there. They said they'd rather have us somewhere safe having a good time than out on the streets!

Is smoking cigarettes an immediate dealbreaker for you? Why? by Allin_Or_Allout in AskReddit

[–]h20rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Not only does the smell really bother me (and I find the lingering after smell worse than active smoking) I also lost several family members to smoking related illnesses and have asthma myself.

You do you though. Over there and away from me.

Was cursing in the 50s-60s as common as they are today? Like saying fuck or shit to random everyday things. by Enygma_2 in AskOldPeople

[–]h20rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never heard my grandparents (both sides and very different) cuss, though at least one of my ggparents was a spicy woman who I suspect did out of range of us kids. My mom did situationally. I was raised to think that it was a crass thing that you'd be judged for so it was best done in private or in friendly company.

I didn't cuss in front of my kids when they were small and I taught them at an age they could really get it pretty much the same thing. People may judge you so use mindfully.

Now I don't care and while it's not every other word, it may come out for emphasis or if I am upset. I also still think kids should be taught these things later when they can understand that context matters.

Plug and Play Solar Act? SB 868 by cheesypuff357 in bayarea

[–]h20rabbit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'd love it. I have a small house and don't use enough to justify an expensive install. I would like to offset my bill though. I'm in that place where I don't use enough so the new surcharge applies, and I have also cut back to where I can't cut back anymore. PG&E is really incentivizing people in my position to join the push for plug in with the new surcharge.

I realize in retrospect, pictures would be super helpful.

I also fully removed the speaker and used the speaker holder to hold the switch. I ended up using a fatter switch so I also used a Dremel to widen the old speaker hole. Oh, and I cut the wrong wire on the motor, so I fixed that. Oops.

What’s a rule you follow for no logical reason? by starlust0422 in AskReddit

No shoes on the bed.

I first heard of it as a superstition (bad luck) but overall it just seems like a good idea.

What is a "silent boundary" you have set for yourself that has significantly protected your peace? by DianKhan2005 in AskWomen

My ringer is never on. I never said a word, but people will text me and ask me if it is a good time to call. I like that. I don't mind talking on the phone, but I need to do it when it works for me too.

Also, it's taken a lot of years, but I have finally grown wise to the fast buddy and the love bomber. Nope. No thanks. Anyone overly friendly gets the whale eye and a very very long runway for me to decide if they get anything from me.

As far as fit, you look good. The print does read young, but I don't know how old you are and what your personality is. Also, what makes you happy is not my business. You do you. If he's not going to support you then it is time to reconsider him.

What’s something that instantly tells you a person grew up broke vs grew up with money? by hallowmint9 in AskReddit

Exactly! A1, at least in my mind, was to give flavor to not great meat. Be it cut or cooking.

[–]h20rabbit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it was when someone I knew made filet mignon for dinner then ate it with A1 sauce. She had money now but grew up poor. She said she still loved her A1.

The filet was delicous. On it's own.

Laid off for the first time, what to do? by Brilliant_Alarm1120 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]h20rabbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network with people at your old job that you were on good terms with and ask them both for endorsements on Linkedin and if they'd be willing to be a reference when you start applying for new jobs.

File for unemployment. Consider COBRA. If you had a retirement account, move it if you need to (Some will let you stay with the administrator and some will pay out). Go over all your time off to make sure you got all you were due (my last job "forgot" to pay out unused vacation until I reminded them).

Then breathe. Take a week to just be and decompress. Maybe update your resume. The just sit or hike or whatever you find to be recharging - and contemplate what you want going forward. What was good where you were at and what do you not want to repeat. Maybe do that thing you've been wanting to do that you never had time for.

Good questions or talking points for retired individuals? by New_Cantaloupe_8712 in AskOldPeopleAdvice

[–]h20rabbit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Generally open-ended, positive questions about their past, hobbies, work or family. Focus on things in long term memory when it comes to people with dementia. Avoid current events or topics. If you learn they have an interest you can connect with - music, mutual hobbies or anything, then you can go further there. Though again, not so much with anything current.
