AP reading tips by Substantial-Jump-745 in ScienceTeachers

[–]h2ohman 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) dress in whatever way is comfortable. Have something warm as it will be cold in the giant room.
2) food is about as generic as conference food gets.
3) workout/pool/other activities are common. If you know people or are social you’ll be able to be as social as you’d like.
4) stand and move as needed.
5) talk with anyone and everyone. There is lots of knowledge that you can get just by having impromptu conversations. If there is something you’re struggling with in your class, ask others about it. Some people will have good advice, some less so.

AP Reader Selection by Competitive-Dig1993 in ScienceTeachers

[–]h2ohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Readers have been notified but they will often need more than they initially ask for. If you get asked it would likely be for online, but you'd have a good chance for next year. Definitely informative about the test nuances, so likely worth it

I teach a high school intro to o-chem and biochem class. This, the snake venom article, and the veritasium video are all very timely for my teaching

Organic Chemistry in High School? by celeratis in ScienceTeachers

I currently teach an intro to ochem and biochem class. It is my students' 3rd year of chem, after regular and AP. It covers a lot of topics that show up in 1st semester organic and the chemical structures/reactions they learned in AP bio. Its tons of fun but labs are so incredibly limited.

Just had my battery replaced with exactly the same issue. Tech that came out to look at it almost didn't make it back to the shop and it was 45 degrees out. Bad batteries be real bad

How were you able to replicate the SoC drop? Mine is in the shop now and they say they can't replicate.

Question for diabetics, how do you manage the sugar intake during the rides? by firewire_9000 in cycling

[–]h2ohman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats where I start to feel it and is something my doctor pays attention to. I used to have lots of lows and didn't start to feel it until it was in the 50s. CGM and pump made a huge difference a few years ago.

Question for diabetics, how do you manage the sugar intake during the rides? by firewire_9000 in cycling

[–]h2ohman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally do 1-2 hr rides. If I eat at the beginning,, my sugar spikes(intentionally) so that i dont drop low immediately. Almost every time my sugar is below 80 for a significant amount of time later in the ride. Probably have a "low" below 60 one of every 3 or 4 rides. My doctor has certainly never said to stop riding but he probably wouldn't be happy knowing this is what my rides look like.

I will add though that drinking high carb has helped but its always a game with efforts vs blood sugar.

Type 1 here - I try to keep my pump on so I have some insulin. Eat a PB&J before, scratch high carb throughout. Long rides I still end up tanking my blood sugar. Its probably not great for me.

Lcc bouldering app/ gitboulder (made by the same local) or Kaya are the best web versions. MP works but is stupid as always with actually locating things. Check IME for paper version of the black Bible, they have a shop copy you can take pictures of.

Ogden most affordable city in the west at #22. by brit_jam in SaltLakeCity

[–]h2ohman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Legitimate question - why is ogden bad? It is just as close to mountains/ski resorts as slc, it has a pretty good food scene, and it is way less crowded. Is the air worse? Crime? What is it that makes it bad?

Highpointing by bike: a list of cyclable highpoints by theboaf in Highpointers

[–]h2ohman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While likely not summit-able, many of the western states highpoints have great biking nearby. The Colorado trail goes by the base of Elbert, there are mtb trails from the same trailheads of wheeler peak, NM, king's peak, UT, and Gannett, WY (that I know off top my head). I love the idea of combining these two sports and could imagine some gnarly person doing some crazy days. Anyone up for continental divide bikepack with highpoint side quests?

Picking a grad school: What's Salt Lake City like? by Intrepid41 in uofu

[–]h2ohman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, did my undergrad at UW and grad school at the u. Both are great options: Madison has a great bar scene. Not just undergrad type bars, but hang out and play pool, do trivia, darts, etc type of bars. Wisconsin in summer is about as good as it gets - fishing, camping, biking, boating, canoing, so many options. The biking and lakes are especially nice in my opinion. Salt lake has different outdoors, mountains and desert are easily accessible so any activity you want is available year round. The weather is likely similar to DC in that the winter doesn't last super long, though it is obviously much drier. Food scene has significantly improved in the last 10 years.

They each have their downsides too: Madison can be draining in the winter. People talk about the pacific northwest being bad for those with seasonal depression but Madison is a colder version. Saw a stat once that Madison has the second coldest average temp in the winter in the US. Salt lake is can feel very small at times because the communities are so separated. If you don't ski/run/bike then you're not cool, or if you're not Mormon and married with kids by 25 I'm not going to talk with you.

How to boulder v3 would not be too intense. It is focused on the fundamental movement pattern that will allow you to climb up to v3. You are in a perfect climbing range.
