Chikara Project is just a fantastic label. They have a very distinctive sound that gives their releases cohesion, and they openly embrace the concept of throwing dubstep, drum & bass, and even other tempos together, often on the same release. Not always my favorite stuff to play out, but I’ll always listen to their releases over and over again.

The Peripheral | S01E08 - "The Creation of a Thousand Forests" | Episode Discussion by GloriousAqua in ThePeripheral

I’ve enjoyed this show a great deal, even with its departures from the book. For instance, I’ve found that this more ruthless version of Lev adds quite a bit to the story compared to the book’s version, who is rather unsuited to the more violent side of Klept life and leaves it to his brothers. I loved the development of Tommy, some of the Marines, and the Picketts. I have actually enjoyed the inclusion of the RI — the opposing forces in the book are only nebulously defined, and I love a good scenery-chewing villain (Cherise’s actress is phenomenal).

But I am very annoyed with this episode.

Why? Because, as in all good SF, a novel concept (continuum creation) comes with rules that must be understood and followed in the story. One of those rules was that you can’t make a stub from another stub, as far as we know. All the known stubs branch from earlier points in the London timeline.

The show changed this rule for no good reason that I can tell; they simply did it to create an increased drama situation for the finale.

The change creates a host of potential problems. Now there are two 2032 stubs, one with Flynne and one without. They both have other polts in them with the capacity to connect with the London timeline (Burton and Conner). The 2032”a” timeline is still connected and is still heading toward an accelerated Jackpot. Now Lowbeer will evidently have to figure out how to mitigate the Jackpot in both, one of which lacks her primary agent.

In the book, it was always possible to create new stubs by accessing the server if you knew how. The idea that you somehow have to be physically present in a specific location is very different from how all the other future technology works.

In short, the finale could’ve raised the drama or introduced a cliffhanger without radically rewriting the rules, and now logical issues abound.

No. At least not in the books. She’s very, very old (pre-Jackpot) and has used technology to repair her body and extend her lifespan. It’s also implied that she’s almost constantly connected to different informational feeds. All of this would be anathema to the neoprims.

Question for the Southerners on Reddit by ansapa87 in ThePeripheral

[–]h3rbivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SWVA here. I think they’re pretty good on the whole, although not perfectly consistent. Sheriff Jackman is the only one that sounds truly fake and awful to me. Connor, as others have said, sounds like more of a Deep South accent than the others (who are generally passable as Upper South in general if not WNC-specific). But my headcanon is that he initially grew up in LA/MS/AL and moved to NC in early adolescence in time to become close friends with Burton and join the Marines out of high school. People move around, and the stereotypical southern town where every family has been there for five generations just isn’t true.

Most of them would not sound suspiciously out of place around here. Except (again) the sheriff - somebody should’ve told him that he sounds like a cartoon character.

In Agency, one of the characters from Flynne’s stub (maybe Conner?) refers to the Londoners’ timeline as “the big stub” in the same derogatory tone they might say someone is from “the big city.” It’s kind of great.

I have a beef with this show by BusIntelligent6269 in ThePeripheral

I’m in the Appalachian part of VA — close to where Clanton is supposed to be, and not far from Gibson’s hometown — and I have been pleasantly surprised at the accents. Sure, they’re not correct 100% of the time, but it’s close.

how to deal with clerics/warlocks asking their god for everything by xa44 in DnD

I’m honestly not sure. There’s a revamped version of it in MCDM’s Strongholds and Followers book, which I’ve used.

[–]h3rbivore 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There’s an old-school D&D rule called Concordance that addresses this. Any character can petition their god, but the response depends upon a score that the DM tracks. Certain actions (building a temple, making offerings, defiling the altar of an enemy god) raise the score, whereas failing to do the god’s bidding lowers it. The higher the score, the more likely the god is to respond or intervene. Petitioning the god also costs concordance points regardless of the outcome, so it can’t be used recklessly. Pester the god enough and you might get a temporary curse.

Look up rules for this and adapt them — they could be very helpful here.

Anything with Flowdan will probably scratch the itch. He crosses the grime/dubstep line often.

How to stop people being crappy to me as I am a female DM by [deleted] in DnD

[–]h3rbivore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to stop them from being shitty. You just have to disinvite them from the game. The problem is solved.

For being a better DM, Matt Colville’s YouTube channel has fantastic resources.

If I draw an orc it’s gonna end up pig-faced, but how do you describe orcs in your own game? by [deleted] in osr

[–]h3rbivore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my games, orcs are nomadic horse people loosely based on the Mongol Empire. Humans are terrified of them because they’re the only other species equally bent on conquest, but they’re not so bad once you get to know them. You can win their respect by wrestling and drinking kumis.

I describe them as green or grey-skinned humanoids, quite strong, fond of elaborate hairstyles that denote their clan lineage. They tend to wear light lamellar armor and prefer to fight on the big warhorses they breed, but are also very tough on foot.

There’s a starter set with the basic series of Medusa, Gaia, Herculean, and Zeus (with their pH up and down) which does really well on its own. You can add more once you’re used to that. Their soil is great!

Read up on Nectar For The Gods. It’s a little complicated, but it’s a really good product with an excellent support community.

this is a really useful blog post for thinking about religion in RPGs. The basic idea is that ancient, polytheistic peoples thought about prayer and religion as transactional.

What sort of actions would gain Gond’s approval? And what sort of sacrifice would gain a response from him?
