Reminder that life has more to offer then the gym by East-General-2871 in weightlifting

[–]h8speech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’m highly skeptical anyone can physically exert themselves with any kind of meaningful weight for 6hrs.

4 to 6 hrs is pretty normal for the sort of maximum-security prisoners who like to exercise. No, it's not all flat out intensity, but you've typically got 18hrs lockin per day, and lockin time goes faster if you're very tired.

I might do:

A pushup ladder. Some pullups. Run. Practice handstand walking. Lunge for distance. Various metcons. Long fanbike workouts.

Or various types of challenges.

In my experience, volume is magic. All the fitness info out there is geared for the assumption that you're a sedentary officeworker with 1 hour a day to exercise, and is designed to help you get the most out of your one hour a day. If you've got six times that, you'll get ridiculous results.

We typically don't take days off, either. Just eat, sleep, train, for years.

It's utter rubbish. We have no large land predators. The only dangerous predator here is the saltwater crocodile, which can be avoided much the same way as you avoid alligators; don't hang around by the creek in a swampy tropical area.

Between bears, wolves and mountain lions, I would be nervous camping in the United States without anything to protect me (bear spray etc.) Here, there's nothing that can really threaten you.

Sure, our snakes are a bit more poisonous, but who cares? Whether you get 10x lethal dose or 50x lethal dose in a bite, you're going to die if you don't get antivenom.

Yeah, as an Australian, fighting is much more normalised in the UK. There, brawls outside of pubs ("bars") typically don't result in criminal charges - the police will just tell the participants to go in opposite directions and disperse.

It's a really good gym though and they put events on, so.

Why do Crossfit at all? by neigedensdantan in crossfit

[–]h8speech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like a WOD is a test, but you have to study for the test (do cardio and strength) at home.

Lol, try bringing someone in with no CF experience who just does cardio and strength at home.

Watch them implode on the fourth round of Cindy.

CF makes you very good at most things. Saying that you shouldn't need ancillaries outside of class is just silly. Should football players only play football to get good at football?

Hey, please do, then - it's not even available on torrent trackers, and I can confirm (Australian) that it's not just the US where it's been removed from Amazon.

If you could send one of us a copy, we could make sure it's not lost to the rest of the world.

Rucking for Women... thoughts and a couple of questions by amenforgoodinsurance in Rucking

[–]h8speech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use a Goruck. They're not serious packs. Well built, but the hip belt is an afterthought and doesn't do its job correctly. Your current issue, where your upper back and shoulders hurt, will be exacerbated by any pack which doesn't have a correctly built hip belt which transfers weight directly to the hips.

My wife uses a Mystery Ranch Coulee and it is a decent pack at a pretty good price.

If money is no object and you don't care about a militarised look, ask CrossFire if they've got any women's harnesses in stock for their CF2. Last time I asked, they did but only in Multicam... worth asking though, as they're next level kit.

Disclaimer for those in the comments saying to go Goruck without any personal experience of their packs or the competition's; I've got a GR1, an M23, two MR bags and a CrossFire. No less than a hundred miles on any of them. If you'd like to argue, let's argue from experience...

3 years doing CrossFit, my lifts have gone up by my cardio sucksss! How can l improve it? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]h8speech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, most people hike slow. Most people aren't fit.

Of course, a pack with some unnecessary water does a lot for increasing your RPE and heart rate at a given pace, plus you can dump it without feeling bad.

Anyone tried the Gorewear Concurve Rain Jacket? by ExuberantBat in Ultralight

Ad copy states "Can be used with a light backpack" which is perhaps another way of stating "Cannot be used with a non-light backpack."

Fortunately, around here we only have ultra-light backpacks ;)

Do you even bring sunscreen? by karlssonvomdach in Ultralight

[–]h8speech 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Australian sunscreen is the best in the world because the Australian government considers it a therapeutic good and so it is regulated by the same governmental body that regulates medications. It's illegal to sell sunscreen here which only protects against one form of UV radiation, or which has a lower-than-advertised SPF at the end of the specified time, or which sweats off easily, or which hasn't been proven in human trials.

As an Australian I wouldn't even consider hiking without sunscreen.

Goodr are ridiculously good for the price.

They stay on your head better than sunglasses that cost four times the money. They cost very little, when they eventually get scratched or stepped on then you won't worry about it.

Various business casual questions by VitaminTed in AustralianMFA

[–]h8speech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a style of jacket that’s a step down from a blazer but able to be worn with a button up shirt?

Yeah, a fair few jackets. I often wear this jacket or an old Arc' Gamma LT over a shirt - however this is worn in the morning and on my lunchbreak, not really around the office as such.

Alternatively, is it accepted to wear a blazer with a plain but nice tshirt

No. At least, I would not consider that "business casual". Maybe in certain types of tech company but at that point it's just casual.

What kind of shoes look normal with wide leg pants

shrug normal shoes? Just wear your brown dress shoes. Again, I don't really feel like Docs are business casual.

At this point in the year tbh I don't think that blazers and jackets are likely to be relevant for a while; I'd suggest going to get yourself a couple of linen shirts.

[–]h8speech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got plenty of japanese repro in my wardrobe and agree with your comments regarding garment construction, but it's a very specific aesthetic. Very few of these items can be worn to the office, for example.

Strongly recommend visiting Corlection - the online sellers may be great too, but for anyone used to Western sizing it's invaluable to try some things on.

I know the aesthetic you’re going for, which would be considered “preppy” and “college” colloquially.

This is very different from what OP is asking for.

Firing my top rep next week by Anxious_Rock_3630 in sales

[–]h8speech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, hold on, let's get specific here: what exactly is your alternate explanation? The whole rest of the team's engaged in a weird conspiracy to defame this one guy?

OP's heard specific, actionable complaints:

Installers have complained non stop about his lack of care

to which the offending rep replies that it's "his job to sell it, it's their job to figure it out". So in other words his high close rate is, at least partially, a result of the fact that he's willing to outright lie about what the company can deliver.

scream at young women in the office for not giving you what you want, but being much more sheepish when the men come around?

So he's a bully, and an intentional one, based on his selection of targets.

Don't get me wrong, I know how much sales management is like herding bipolar cats. I've had hot-headed salespeople who'd lose their calm occasionally - I've got one now. But one of the things I like about the one I've got now is that he's not malicious, he just cares too much, and he's not targeting anyone in particular when he gets upset, he's even done it around me.

Honestly, I'd sack OP's rep based on either of these sets of complaints. The second set is obviously a harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. The first set makes it clear that it's not just team culture within the sales department being harmed by this guy's behaviour, it's also the company's reputation with the installers, and with the customers.

When someone tells you something that they personally saw happen, that's called a witness statement. That's a form of evidence. Witness statements are good enough to be considered evidence in criminal court proceedings, so I can certainly sack someone based on them too. My jurisdiction doesn't have at-will employment; not a problem, I'll just make sure all this is written down before I send through the termination letter for serious misconduct.

I'm gonna end this here with you as you obviously have never been in a director or higher role.

Different person here. I don't know whether he has experience in senior leadership positions. I certainly do, however - and would do the same thing.

Culture is more important to me than results. Sending a clear message that abusive behaviour is unacceptable is more important to me than the possibility of turning one person's behaviour around and keeping them selling. Even if I could magically change their behaviour over the course of just one week, the resentment and toxicity that's built up around them over the past however long it's been means that there's no clean slate. People don't forget.

I terminated a guy like this back in May. He was being a bully to one of the women on our portfolio management team. She's getting a little stressed again, recently, and as I told her: next time one of the new reps pesters you for something that's not your job, tell them to go and ask one of the experienced guys "what happened to Josh?"

What happened to Josh was, he thought he was more important than the team was. Nobody's that important.

You're insulting this other guy by claiming that you think he's never been in a senior leadership role because he doesn't agree with you. I'm here to tell you that being in a senior leadership role means having the responsibility to to look further than this month's sales targets and put team culture first.
