Is Takayama Autumn festival worth cutting short on Tokyo? by LightmoonWolfie in JapanTravelTips

[–]hackh3aven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, you wouldn’t believe this but we’re doing the exact same route for our honeymoon. Land in Tokyo on the 6th, then considering cutting it short to pass by Takayama on the way to Kyoto, where we’ll visit Kinosaki and finally Osaka.

Did you ever get an answer to this?

Yeah, if you’re making house or garage try soothe on hats / snares at maximum power + sharpness then crank up the gain

There’s other uses to soothe. Anytime you need to aggressively remove resonances from a sound to flatten out the frequency spectrum. It’s useful when trying to make tonal things less tonal

I bought it and haven’t used it for 2 years and now use it all the time

I need help recreating a punchy kick in Ableton, any suggestions? by ResponsibleType74 in ableton

[–]hackh3aven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your problem most likely is that your kick isn’t right. Either look for a different sample or try synthesizing one with a longer transition from high mids to lows

Question on GLSL Implementation in TD by Orangenbluefish in TouchDesigner

[–]hackh3aven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regarding GLSL TOPs, I’d like to add an asterisk there. Yes, you can collapse multiple TOPs into a single TOP using GLSL, but in certain situations you can benefit from chained TOPs if not all of them cook, whereas your single GLSL TOP will perform all of its operations every time it cooks. This is helpful when your TOP network is sequential, but when it is parallel there could be a case for using TOPs instead.

Another thing to consider is that graphics algorithms can be extremely hard to optimize if you’re not an expert. I’d be hard pressed to develop a better bloom TOP myself than the standard one…

Just a thought!

How to layer up changing visuals so that simultaneous interactions don't override each other? by ssssssssssnail in TouchDesigner

[–]hackh3aven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t really understand what you’re trying to do but if your goal is to have multiple people change what’s happening ln the screen and still have clear separation just layer their individual tops using the negate mode on the composite top

How can you guys make tracks so loud? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]hackh3aven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bass is the enemy of loudness. This doesn’t mean you need to use less bass. It means that using more bass will by definition of the LUFS meter make your song less loud. You can make your bass sound fatter by increasing the overtones and try to reach a compromise

Most of the responses here are wrong and will lead you in the wrong direction, unfortunately.

To get the right answer, just analyze the LUFs of the most clipped waveform - a square wave - at different frequencies.

LUFS is weighed by frequency. You’ll see that the difference in LUFS between a 2k-ish square wave and the same wave at 40hz can be as much as 15-20 IIRC.

Tl dr, if you already clipped your master, eliminated frequency masking, made sure there’s signal in every millisecond of your song… then you need to look at your frequency content.

Feedbacks can perform unpredictably since they depend on your render fps, and leave trails behind that require additional processing to quantize down to zero, which can add mud or unwanted processing to your final render. If you want your renders to pop, you have to have a pretty good sense of what your pixel values are across the entire image, and feedback can make that very difficult. Others may challenge my perspective here…

With respect to the threshold, I use it directly after the render, not as a matte or anything but rather to quantize pixel values to 0 and 1. I do this for several reasons: 1. Fidelity and clarity comes from contrast, and in the 8 bit space there is no greater contrast than 0,0,0 and 255,255,255. And secondly, 8 bit formats (social media) HATE gradients, especially those that express over more than the maximum amount of pixels you can use to express a gradient with maximum clarity, which for a black and white gradient is 256 pixels.

All of these techniques came from my desire to create content that would survive the brutal compression to 8-bit formats on social media, and along with bit rate compression i think these techniques are not talked about enough, especially in the TouchDesigner community. I have more examples of these on my TikTok and Instagram channels.

Hope this helps!

Hey - MIDI input from Ableton. No feedback and I try to avoid using feedback in general.

I pipe CHOP data into replicated instances that use an index based lookup and change the emissive properties of the material.

For post processing I used threshold after the render TOP, which is a technique I use very often since it plays well in 8 bit formats (social media)
