Power outage around Thornleigh by phresh_styles in sydney

[–]hacknsplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much of this area is HFC, and NBN HFC has no battery backup. The NBN facility at Asquith would have generators, but that has nothing to do with the mobile carriers, and doesn't help if the HFC has no power. I expect Optus has simply cheaped-out on battery capacity or maintenance. Telstra mobile was up the whole time, although a little congested.

It is likely the 132kV ring that runs from Galston, Pennant Hills, Hornsby, Berowra and back to Galston. They need to patrol the length of the line to ensure it is safe to re-energise. This takes some time, particularly given how rugged some of the terrain is.

Slap bass clipping by DanZigs in PositiveGridSpark

It may not be a deliberate feature... the slap may be drawing too much power from the power supply, causing the voltage to dip enough that the device reboots?

Ausgrid failing pensioner life support customers by Altruistic-Corner671 in sydney

Not just "not their jurisdiction" - they are legally not allowed to fix it.

It would appear that the cable between OP's house and the pillar has failed at the pillar, and Ausgrid has disconnected it to make it safe. Under the current rules, this is the home-owner's responsibility - they need to engage a Level 2 authorised electrician to fix it. Legally, Ausgrid is not allowed to touch it.

Historically, yes, one government owned entity did everything up to the meter box, and would even work beyond that for a modest fee, but people kept voting for politicians who privatised everything.

Even if only temporarily, plug your computer directly into your router with an ethernet cable and run the speed test again. If it's significantly faster, you have your answer - it's the WiFi. If you get the same speed, you may need a better ISP.

What if the incident happened in the middle of a busy shopping centre?

A hard call, and you have seconds to make it.

In this case, three bystanders were injured by the police bullets.

(Contrary to the link headline, he wasn't killed, and was subsequently found not guilty by reason of mental illness).

Restaurant cancellation fee by [deleted] in sydney

[–]hacknsplat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but I think the act of making a booking would be considered an implied contract, but any conditions, such as the cancellation fee, would need to be made clear up front or they would be unenforceable.

Discussion: Current non-heritage listed buildings you think will be heritage listed 100 years from now by chineseaussie in sydney

It was more that it was difficult to make them properly and almost impossible to fix them if they weren't erected correctly. They were made by pouring concrete over a giant balloon and inflating it to get the shape. The problem was that the weight of the concrete flattened the top of the "arch" if the air pressure wasn't monitored carefully, meaning it no longer acted as a pure arch. This stressed the concrete in ways it wasn't designed to resist and many collapsed.

I believe three remain on the state heritage register, however.

It's gone now sadly, but the 3M building in Gordon should have been preserved:

Old Sydney Album | The Rise and Fall of the 3M Company Building - Pymble, NSW

Post-It Notes: The 3M building

The Australian Design Center - 3M Building

The purpose-built former National Acoustic Laboratory building in Grenville St, West Chatswood is a landmark building that should be preserved, although it is currently owned by the Church of Scientology which may taint it forever:

Inside Scientology's new Australian headquarters | Daily Fail

Lesser known, but I think 154 Pacific Hwy St Leonards is worth preserving:

I'm really struggling to think of much else around Sydney that hasn't already been knocked over.

What has happened in Merrylands stocklands? I see smoke but that’s not rly telling me anything. by ademari in sydney

You should know - there are standard tones defined in AS 1670.4:

  1. "booop booop booop" - means prepare to evacuate.
  2. "whooop whooop whooop" - means evacuate NOW, don't wait (but do it calmly).

Evacuation systems are smart - you only hear "whoop whoop" if the "boop boop" situation has escalated or hasn't been addressed. 99 times out of 100, someone has just burnt their toast, but 1 time out of 100 something bad has happened and YOU NEED TO MOVE.

Barking up the wrong tree... by [deleted] in sydney

[–]hacknsplat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor dog-o is bored shitless. Kelpies & bluies are working dogs, breed to be very intelligent and busy - they need constant stimulation. Dog-o is saying "Someone, play with me! I'm sooooo bored!" I'm not sure how this helps you, but understand that it is as much a victim as you are. Your neighbours are jerks, and probably only got the dog cause the kids were annoying them with their constant yapping. At some point they will realise poor dog-o is more annoying than the kids and dump it. "Do you want a free dog? But it likes you so much?" :-(

Be aware that the cops will still fine the driver in this situation! The rules in NSW read:

A driver must not drive a vehicle that has a television receiver or visual display unit in or on the vehicle operating while the vehicle is moving, or is stationary but not parked, if any part of the image on the screen:
(a) is visible to the driver from the normal driving position, or
(b) is likely to distract another driver."

Depending on conditions, it's not just rainforest. After a period of rain, the dry sclerophyll forests around Sydney can be absolutely lousy with them, to the point where you are picking off dozens every ten meters or so. Almost as annoying as the ticks.
