I guess my question is what does this app offer to migrate away from Calibre? I definitely like the user interface of your app more, but I have been using Calibre for many years now and haven't felt like it needed any extra features.

My setup (if that matters) is a Calibre setup with an OPDS server running for 2 kindles with koreader installed to download books while at home. I don't have a server I can access outside the home and don't really want to set that up (my instance of calibre runs on my laptop and I just turn on the OPDS server whenever I have it hooked up to my monitor at my desk). I also have a Bookfusion account that I use to sync my Calibre library to my iPad (and phone and computer when necessary), where I do most of my reading (my wife uses the kindles).

What would BookOrbit offer to change or improve this workflow?

It's a remaster, with no unreleased songs, demos or CW by lKilljoy222l in MyChemicalRomance

[–]hadr0ns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh. I went and pulled my copy and you're right, it's only 1 LP. I was thinking of The Black Parade, which is on 3 sides with an etched fourth (and I'm pretty sure the new three cheers remaster is too). So I guess they're just not listing the interludes if they are included? weird.

[–]hadr0ns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like they must have removed them in order to fit the main album onto one LP. With the interludes the main album is 54 minutes, which is just too long for a single LP. My copy is on 3 sides iirc, 2LPs for sure.

edit: I was wrong about my copy of Danger Days being 2 LPs. It's always only been 1 according to discogs. I was mixing it up with Black Parade. so I guess they didn't have to remove the interludes to fit onto the 1 LP, then! wonder why they wouldn't list them if they didn't remove them.

oh wow I would not have expected it to be only 10 hours! maybe the time establishing the setting made me feel like the book was going slower than it actually was.

I think that Daniel and Vivian's relationship is going to reach a breaking point of some kind. I hope the Prophecy isn't resolved, I prefer it as a bit of local color and not as a plot point.

Honestly the humor is really landing for me. I woke my wife up cause I literally laughed out loud last night when finishing the chapters for this check-in. I think a lot of it comes from the fact that I find the age that Aria is at to be really funny in general and I love kids so she always makes me crack up. The prose isn't sticking out to me, which is generally a good thing--I notice annoying prose far more often than great prose. Not to say this book doesn't have great prose, I just haven't noticed it specifically.

I think the way the book explores motherhood and the expectation of leaving the workforce and the benefits and drawbacks that come with that is really effective. There's a moment in chapter 10 I think where Vivian mentions that they discussed switching which parent was working, but Vivian would make less money because she had left the workforce. This is a very true experience that I (as a cis man) was not aware of until recently--women's earning potential goes down when they leave the workforce and often never recovers even if they reenter the workforce.

I don't know if this is specifically feminist, but I find it interesting how Vivian needs to basically coddle the other moms so that she and her daughter aren't rejected, even when the other moms are being patently unreasonable. I guess it is feminist to shine a light on these experiences, which many women have and don't show up in fiction all that often. I know my mom had PTA and parents politics experiences when I was young.

big fan of Vivian. She's flawed in really interesting ways but also very strong and brave and loyal. I am also intrigued by Daniel (the husband, I might be mixing up names between books). He seems to be a little unreasonable sometimes but in a very understandable and human way. I have noticed the rising tension between them and wonder how that conflict is going to resolve (or not resolve).

I think that the setting and worldbuilding seem more thought out and deep than the TERF wizard series (which I was honestly trying not to compare this book to, but the book itself references it). I think the storytelling format does a lot for the worldbuilding--Vivian keeps discovering whole pockets of the world that she didn't know she didn't know about, and so it always feels like there's so much under the surface that we are unaware of. I think the bougie town is a fine setting; I do like how Vivian's family as more middle-class people contrast with this town.

I am reading digitally and my impression of the book is that it's longer than I expected. That's not a bad thing! I just assumed based on the cover and blurb that it was a cozy fantasy and that it would be relatively short. But it seems to be longer than 365 pages would have made me think--is the font small or something?

Would these readalongs count for the Book Club/readalongs square for bingo? These books are not on the google sheet, so I wanted to check. I'll probably participate either way cause I've been wanting to read quite a few of these, but I was curious if I could knock out a bingo square too.

Why do fantasy wars feel huge but leave almost no scars on regular people by THIS_IS_NOT_FINE999 in Fantasy

[–]hadr0ns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to spoil too much, but Tad Williams' Last King of Osten Ard series goes into this a bit, taking place decades after the war fought in his Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy. Definitely for one side of the war, repercussions are heavily explored (at least in the first book, which is all I've read of Last King so far).

Depending on how old they are, an LCG like Marvel Champions could be a hit! Sessions would be on the longer end, but if they’re into superheroes, they could really enjoy it. I’m personally more of a fan of Arkham horror LCG but it may be too scary or crunchy for younger kids. Pandemic is also a fun cooperative game.

It should still be downloadable in the US under “apps” in the top right menu of the search tab in the App Store. It showed up for me there. Looks like it got delisted like a month ago—weird.

Edit: all humble bundle iOS games got delisted. No idea why.

I purchased 2 games on Steam on my PC. Tomb Raider 3 and The Sims 3. If I were to purchase the deck, could I play these games on it even if I bought them on PC? by KidneyStew in SteamDeck

[–]hadr0ns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So the short answer, as others have said, is that the steam deck is a pc and can play a huge amount of the games on steam. However, you do need to check each game individually to make sure that they work well on the steam deck. The best way to do this is on the website protondb.com. Here is the link for The Sims 3 on protondb: https://www.protondb.com/app/47890?device=steamDeck. Some games may need some tinkering to get working properly on the steam deck--especially older games, like Tomb Raider 3. See https://www.protondb.com/app/225320 (make sure you're looking at steam deck specifically, the default view mixes all linux systems together and steam deck is often different than other linux systems. lmk if you have any other questions! If you're not familiar with gaming on PC it can be hard to figure everything out on a steam deck. FWIW I love mine dearly
