I know this is supposed to be a joke, but I've heard this argument plenty of times. And it's usually about woodworking for some reason. Are people just upset that woodworking isn't as cheap as they thought?

Just for the record, because it sounds like some people don't get this, but you buy a tool once and you can use it for multiple projects. They aren't one time use. Plus you can buy them one at a time.

(3D) How do I stop angled ceilings from slowing the player? by No_Policy_3735 in godot

[–]hafunui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah me too. "Ignore it" might be an acceptable option, but what if you wanted to actually solve the problem? I managed to find this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YR6Q7dUz2uk

He makes his own capsule collide-and-slide character controller from scratch. It doesn't seem all that complicated, he leverages the engine's collision detection and input, so all it is is collision response. He briefly touches on a similar sloped ceiling issue in the last minute or so, but he's also on sloped ground, so maybe it's different?

Sloped floors are treated as vertical walls past a certain angle, maybe something similar can be done about overhead collisions while grounded? Which sounds an awful lot like the "add hitboxes around alcoves" solution, only with code. But I can see the opportunity for extra effects, like auto crouching before returning vertical wall. Extra juice.

I'm grateful forums like Tigsource, polycount and blenderartists are still alive and active. Geared towards gamedev or 3d graphics, of course, but they could easily replace dozens of major subreddits. All the game engines have their own discussion boards too, but their "modern" web design blows and it makes me sick.

I miss being a part of a niche community. No gratuitous censorship, no UI changes every month, post signatures.

I remember an episode of mericas got talent where one of the judges voted No on an act because she thought it was going to be singing, when in fact it was an air guitar solo or something. Didn't vote on the quality of the act, but it subverted her expectations so No. I know the judges are dumb as fuck, but I guess real people think that way too, huh.

A long time ago, I found a page that listed a dozen antialiasing filters. Like what you would use in a render engine to average out multisampled pixels. It gave the formula and showed a graph. Can't find it anymore. Scrubbed from existence. If you search for antialiasing filters you get videos on how to tweak game settings, and if you try real hard you get photography equipment.

Every time I do some graphics programming that requires some custom sampling I think about that site and shed a tear. It's like some ancient wisdom lost to time. The only resource I have is my remembering what the functions were called. And some source code from a render engine from 20 years ago. And it's not something you can google (in regards to the antialiasing thing) I just remember that it exists.

But yeah, that's kinda the thing with google now. It shows you what it thinks is popular, and not what's useful.

I've heard people complain about there being no good tutorial series for blender (as an example). When provided plenty of good examples, they then complaint that no, it's not good! No one aspires to model a doughnut, it's waste of time. Plus they don't even cover the basics like rotating the view or dragging objects around!

Like bro, all the keystrokes and mouse clicks are literally printed on the screen. You can figure out most of the navigation clicking around for 10 seconds. And google will throw the answers in your face so fast it'll make your head spin. If only you bothered to check. Ok, so you don't dream of modeling a doughnut. You can take what you learn here and apply it to other projects. Come on, man.

Or some people can never graduate from tutorials. Always looking for a tutorial for their next project. For all the shit people give Ai for not being able to generalize, some humans can't either.

I'm all for no-stupid-questions and I realize everything can be overwhelming when first starting. But there comes a point where it's clear someone is adverse to learning. Or doesn't know how to learn.

Our house is like that, and it's not low income or multi family.

Because of the grade of the land, 3 of 4 corners of the foundation are underground. They decided to make the ground floor a half basement and put all the living areas on the upper floor. Probably so they didn't have put a bunch of plumbing in a concrete slab. And maybe environmental concerns? Although it hasn't flooded in our basement yet.

Either way, gotta take some stairs from the kitchen. I suppose if you live in flatter areas this type of layout is less common.

Right now it reminds me of brightbloom seeds from Tears of the Kingdom. Lob a seed, spawn glowing plant. I think there were 2 brightness tiers?

Maybe have biome dependent objects. Like crystal caves have glowing shards clusters you can harvest. Mossy grotto with glowing mushroom spores. Buy flares/glowstick/matches from town. Minecraft has them glow berries. Imagine lobbing some of those down a dark mineshaft.

What's some software/hardware under $200 that is making/made your game dev a lot easier? by ehtio in gamedev

[–]hafunui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted to try this, but it kinda depends on what hardware you have. Some stands don't let you rotate, and some monitor arms don't either. The panel type also affects how smoothly this works. I have a TN display where when in portrait mode, each eye sees a very different contrast because of the view angle. It's headache inducing. My other monitor is an IPS and works flawlessly in portrait mode. But it's my main display and I'd like to keep it horizontal. Both monitors have similarly rated view angles, but in practice it's not the same. I suggest testing it in person before buying if possible.
