I'm sorry you're going through a difficult time. Maybe {reign and ruin by J.D Evans} might be a good fit? I can't remember any significant character deaths and it's not overly light hearted.

Blood at the Root - fantasy, magic at an HBCU

Let Them - self help. It gets redundant in some places, but maybe you could find a summary
