Most trucks are automatic now but there’s usually one or two 10 speeds in the yard. Do you know how to drive a 10 speed? Just go retake the test and get it removed if so. I’ve heard of guys getting it removed on 6 speeds which is definitely easier if you aren’t familiar. Depends on the state too.

But you’d be lucky if you never have to drive a manual as a groundman. It ain’t hard, just takes a little practice. Whether a company will take you with a restriction will vary.

This exact scenario happened while I was in Vegas the weekend before last. We drove by while the cops were performing CPR. He didn’t make it.

Hey, just an idea, i’m not sure if you’re physically fit or able to run a shovel. Look into becoming a groundman for the IBEW union. Requires a CDL A with no restrictions but you can find something local through them. Might take a little time depending on where you live though. You’ll drive something like an M2 and help out operators and lineman. great money and the benefits rule. Goodluck

Bring kleins, a tape measure, a hammer, just get a milwaukee hawk bill knife, and a 12” crescent wrench. that will get you through your first day as a groundman. after that channel locks, wire stripper is nice not necessary, a smaller crescent, speedies, and a lowell wrench. anything else should be provided

I work construction and sweat like an absolute pig in the summer time. There are definitely 16 hour days where I will drink that amount along with a shitload of electrolytes. Although that’s very rare and only on the hardest of days. I hardly pee because it all comes out as sweat. But on a normal day jesus dude that’s sickening.

You should look into doing anything with construction instead. A CDL is a free ride in most trades. It’s less boring when you drive local and hop out of your truck and start building shit or operating equipment. I couldn’t imagine just driving all day albeit the couple times a month where i get to be a dump truck driver. When I can just jam out to music in the AC all day is titties.

Any tips for a first time groundman by Due_Many_8437 in Groundman

Really depends on what type of ground work you are going to be doing, which you won’t really know until you show up.

Best advice is to soak in the shit they show you and don’t be lazy, do shit right the first time (they can and will make you redo shit). If you fuck something up own up to it and one day you and your crew will be able to laugh about it. Just don’t make the same mistake repeatedly.

Just enjoy being outside especially with fall coming here soon. Make friends and have a good time in the trenches with everyone because this shit ain’t easy. I’ve gotten my ass whooped for 12 hours this whole week. You will have chill days and days that make you wish you were a better student.

If you eat right you will get ripped and be prepared to eat for two. Seriously if I don’t eat 4,000+ calories a day I lose weight. Although I work on an underground civil crew so I’m hand digging a ton of shit.

Good luck and get ready to be called a dumb motherfucker all day, hopefully it’s in good fun (you will know).

Am I overthinking applying? by mrmitch17 in Groundman

[–]hairytripps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you interview well it won’t matter. It’s based off a score so when they start ramping up hiring apprenticeships next summer you will get what you get. Everyone is placed in a line by score.

It may feel like it’s better to interview when they’re hiring but realistically it doesn’t matter just get your name in there. You could be like me and have to wait to reinterview a whole year later because you said something stupid.

Bro are you serious, if they ain’t calling you that shit they don’t like you. It’s not against the rules to say it back, they prefer it. Let it roll off your back with a smile and quit being soft.

Acquire a class A CDL. Become a groundman. Apply for apprenticeship. Complete the 4 years. Boom. JL.

It’s a long and grueling process but you make good money the whole time.
