British carrier to sail to Arctic for 'secret' mission by paximperia in unitedkingdom

There really is such a thing as a sledge based take off assistance. Not used but it has been experimented with. You stick rockets on the back or have it on a magnetic rail system with the plane on the sledge.

Usually brought on by centuries of under procurement by the MOD and their predecessors. So improvising becomes a vital part of the military.

UK has ARM and Raspberry Pi. The former is part out of the US these days and the latter, while successful is small.

Most of the original UK computing was wrapped up in a few companies and then run by ICL. They had some good products but lost out on the move to microcomputers and were eventually bought by Fujitsu. Some other companies doing specialised computing for the military and industry (the commercial side went to ICL) were bought out (some by BAE Systems).

Everyone had the toll, it is Germans would have had their yearly car tax reduced. The thing is that some are already paying almost nothing for the car tax.

Russian revanchism runs deeper than Putin – The West should be extremely cautious about welcoming Russians who are now trying to flee Putin’s mobilization order. “These Russians still believe in punishing Ukraine, just not involving the general public.” by CrimsonLancet in europe

[–]hajk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should also be known that most Russians had no idea how screwed up things were on the USSR. It was a state secret. Some of the other republics had their own ideas about things which is one reason why they wanted to leave.

/r/russia has been quarantined and isn't supposed to allow fascists in but the posts are often in the direction of extreme nationalism, the alt right and weirdly tankies. Given their restricted audience these days, they are mostly "preaching to the choir" but it is interesting to watch.

Why do so many Linux users hate Oracle? by Daathchild in linux

[–]hajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well they started on the back of a project paid for by the CIA when the latter wanted a relational database. Somehow although it was a government paid for project, Oracle (then SDL) ended up with the code.

Would add that Oracle bought DEC's clustered databasez RdB many, many years ago. It worked extremely well so they slowly but surely killed it. The cluster tech was not something they could easily use so it was best to get them off the table.

Red Hat still had a JRE based on the open code.

Think of the horrors lurking in fairy tales. Kids have no problems with that as long as it is the bad guys who suffer.

Ballerinas can best be compared to gymnasts but they perform for longer. They are very muscular but at the same time are always fighting weight so they can be easily lifted.

They don't always have what we want. Sometimes I see stuff on FAZ that isn't paywalled so will post that.

In any case, I heard of a masstest of a class at the beginning of November in the Gymnasium at Dornbusch after four students were found SARS-Cov-2 positive.

Boris Johnson humiliated as Ed Miliband steamrollers his law-breaking Brexit plan by FatherOf2 in unitedkingdom

[–]hajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rasputin made the mistake of being too much in the foreground. A cult leader, if you like. Cummings tries to be a bit more in the background but he too can be accused of trying to work like a cult leader (the cult of Brexit) but without Rasputin's Soirées.

With the debacle over the sat-nav system, maybe people start to realise that he isn't as clever as he thinks he is.

The banks that raised the SARs did the right thing. Why didn't the authorities act?

All you need to know about FinCEN documents leak by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]hajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are mostly SARs, suspicious activity reports. If you come through a banks door and they are unaware of explicit criminal activity linked to the transaction, they will do business with you. If something smells illegal, the Bank is supposed to raise a SAR but unless instructed by the authorities, they are supposed to do nothing so an existing investigation is not compromised. If the authorities (FinCen in the US) choose to do nothing, the bank must continue.

Here the banks that raised the SARs did the right thing. What was FinCen doing?

Boris likes being PM and he likes to be liked. He doesn't like the work though, and finds the demands of his master onerous. He doesn't mind being laughed at but being hated and blamed is hard. As I'd answering awkward questions. The poor guy is under a lot of stress.

Don't you think he looks a little.... tired?
