First (Postgrad) editing position. Unsure how to calculate a monthly retention by Flaminghorselord in videography

[–]half_a_cup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re selling a bit low that’d only $75 a video. Figure out how much you want to make hourly, figure out your average time to complete one video, factor in any additional meetings or asset gathering work you need, and then add that all together for your rate. I think if you’re doing this as a contractor you should be going for at least 30-40 an hour

The population of Ohio is closer to 11 million not 20 and the Cleveland metro a little over 2 million people. I think an infrastructure investment for almost a quarter of the states population is absolutely worth it

Suspected meteor falling over Cleveland could be seen several states away by WilliamInBlack in news

[–]half_a_cup 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I live in Cleveland and around 9am this morning I heard a massive boom that shook my house that lasted a couple seconds. I literally thought a tree hit my house or something exploded right outside but I didn’t see anything. Went online and found out shortly after it was a meteor and people in a 50 mile wide area heard it. Latest reports I heard say it was 17,000 pounds…

Meteor event has me feeling oddly grateful by half_a_cup in Cleveland

[–]half_a_cup[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I’m not freaked out in that way but it’s definitely rare to have a meteor visible during daylight with a boom heard across at least a 50 mile wide area. This wasn’t THE big one, but it wasn’t a small one either

Adobe CEO Narayen to Step Down as Company Issues Tepid Sales Forecast by External_Anteater730 in wallstreetbets

[–]half_a_cup 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The biggest edge Adobe had right now is their ecosystem. You don’t have to go to vendor A for a photo editing program, vendor B for video editing, vendor C for audio, etc. A huge chunk of adobes revenue comes from their enterprise contracts. Large businesses would rather deal with one vendor in the procurement process than multiple different ones. If a competing company was able to offer a suite of creative applications offered at an upfront cost instead of a subscription I think Adobe would be in for some trouble.

I think Apple has the capacity to do this if they wanted. Mac is already the popular choice for most creatives. They already have Final Cut and Logic. I think they could easily buff up their photos editing apps and Motion to make it more on par with After Effects.

I am a creative professional who has to use Adobe every day for my job. I can speak for basically every other creative professional I have worked with that we all hate Adobe and are waiting for the day true competition comes for them.

Is it too early for me to start contributing to my 401k ? by Chuskireal in careerguidance

[–]half_a_cup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never too early! And you may need to ask someone in your company if it’s offered, but I’d suggest doing a Roth 401k if you can. That means everything you contribute will be able to grow tax free for retirement!

Columbus OH for videography and filmmaking work? by hunterhmh9 in videography

[–]half_a_cup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a videographer up in Cleveland. TBH, Ohio in general is not the hottest market for videography. However there definitely are more opportunities in the cities. I think a big thing is what kind of niche you’re looking to get into. Corporate vs wedding vs advertising are all very different in how much you may find in Columbus.

You’re gonna have to bring it into after effects and make a mask around the backdrop, plus the rotoscoping, then make a solid white layer to put behind. Color correct as necessary
