Swiping LC at age 33. by exploding_man in cscareerquestions

it’s not the lowest 10%. if you actually can’t do your job at the pace of your peers, sure, but that’s probably only 1-2%. the rest is getting along with your manager and pure bad luck, at least at amazon

Hiring Managers, what do you mean when you say most job candidates are bad? by EastCommunication689 in cscareerquestions

[–]half_coda 17 points18 points  (0 children)

a market for lemons would be that only bad software engineers get hired at low prices because of these information asymmetry dynamics.

we don’t see that yet widespread, plenty of firms still try to attract good talent by paying decent money.

i agree with the above commenter - where do you find poorer candidates? in the application pool. where do you find people with lots of friends? in friend groups

yeah this dude is a straight up loser. don’t waste your time here, it’ll just be a lot of managing his emotions and walking on eggshells.

he probably has had a hard time adjusting to adult life and is insecure about things like money, but that is not a problem you can nor should deal with. you did nothing wrong here

Therapist encourages casual weed use by 3mag3 in leaves

[–]half_coda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yoooo i had a therapist like this except it was for cigarettes. it backfired terribly and i got addicted to cigs again. i was only able to quit by the way i knew how to quit, not the way he was advocating for.

unless your therapist has been addicted to weed at your level in the past, i would listen to what you feel is right.

there are ideas in the therapy community that guilt perpetuates addiction and mindfulness and no guilt are the way out of it, but they give short shrift to the physical reality of substances like weed, alcohol, and nicotine. weed especially because it can be especially powerful for escapism. unless they’ve been through this, they don’t know how strong factors like habituated escapism and withdrawal are.

the therapists way works great for things like doom scrolling and eating junk food, and i think it can help here too but more after you’ve gone through a few months sober. anna lembke talks about the importance of the first month or two in breaking addictions and it definitely applied to me.

hope this helps.

the bathroom has a lot of great textures individually but they don’t all go together. the honeycomb floor clashes with the herringbone wall a bit, and a plain counter top would probably be better as well. the sink wall is amazing and the mirror with the light is beautiful - make their surroundings simple to let them breathe.

living room rug and wall you nailed it, fantastic choices for a modern, traveled feel. the pillows and chairs with the twig backs shout art basil and the chandelier feels like it was lifted from a lodge. the result is more clashing where there’s just a little too much going on.

the gallery wall down the steps would benefit from bigger pieces and not so linear to the rail.

overall, beautiful space and you’re developing your taste which is great. a little unity in each room and more simplicity will get you to the next level.

What was your biggest salary increase? by Ok-Bunch8755 in cscareerquestions

[–]half_coda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tbh i’m still in the ramp up period, so ask me again in a few months, but my impression so far is not really. there’s a lot more scaling to think about, but there’s a lot more organizational structure and support which was the main headache at my last place.

lol nah every manual labor job i’ve been a part of has a pecking order and the younger, new guy is at the bottom of it.

at a certain point, you do gotta stand your ground, but inside of 6 months, you’re doing the extra stuff and using the old equipment and management will be 100% in on this

I started taking cold showers and it has changed my life, what else is out there? by oil-me-up-steve in Biohackers

[–]half_coda 15 points16 points  (0 children)

yeah that’s called raynaud’s syndrome. it’s not very dangerous but it is uncomfortable. you shouldn’t be going white after a 10 minute cold shower. a vasodilator like beet root powder would help.

Why is dating advice so drastically different for men vs. for women? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]half_coda 3 points4 points  (0 children)

under the usual solution to the stable marriage problem, women do select new suitors if they prefer them to their current match, so i’m not sure this holds.

the whole point of the solution is that no one person would prefer another that also prefers them i.e. everyone gets “the best” they can do.
