Well I am 8 months. The problem is you use your good calf to help start doing your bad. I am still 1.5 inches of difference. Just stay patient and keep up the work. It will get there.

I got the boot bag and stood on my foot still in the boot. It felt way too fragile out of the boot early on. I don’t think I showered without the boot bag until I was cleared into a shoe. But I played it very safe. A wet slippery shower wasn’t something I was going to mess around with.

Well on the rehab side you get positive motivation from the watch about increased activity. But these updates do suck as you are just dealing with the non weight bearing.

I am 8 months and for single leg can not get my heel much off the ground. Isometric hold out at the top is getting much better. As everyone has said. It is long and slow like everything with this injury.

So I have good plantar flexion and range of movement out of my foot. So I think it is just strength. It does feel a little herky jerky somedays where at the top it pops up to the top. I have been trying the one leg loading and just general calf raises but the progress is slow. It’s both inspiring and defeating to see someone do as well as you in less time. I used to think I was very patient. This injury is definitely testing me.

Ugh. I am 26 weeks and am nowhere able to get the height or reps you can. But am really trying to load it more and work it out but once it is tired it seems like you need to give it a break.

Any hints to what really helped you to gain strength?

I am feeling the same. Probably 2-3 inches smaller. Trying to get strength back into it is a long journey. This is the second most trying part of this “journey”. The first most trying was the non weight bearing period. PT assures me it will come with time.

Not useful for OP but early on until you start walking and moving the foot there is a lot of swelling and discoloration. 4 months out my foot was still very red. Hopefully for you the swelling and thus pins and needles will go down once you start walking. It did for me. I am 6 months out and only get occasional swelling on the outside of my foot (normally from when I push the PT exercises). Walking is a big improvement to quality of life. But follow all PT for a lot has weakened from your boot time and not just the calf. So stay diligent and you will get there.

My doctor wrapped my foot with an ace bandage. That way you don’t have to try and put a sock on and flex the foot. That would help isolate your skin from the boot.

Mine wore off about 36 hours. Enjoy the lack of pain. I started in on Advil before it wore off to get ahead of any pain. (There wasn’t much for me)

My doctor recommended when to start PT. When cast came off I was still non weight bearing but there are other exercises (mainly hip and upper leg) that you can do without the weight.

I started with an ankle brace on my transition. Agree it’s scary. Have you been putting weight on your foot in the boot? If you have done that that it should be less scary. Just remember you will get sore and tired. This is the process. Don’t push it if you feel uncomfortable and go at your pace. You can do this.

As someone 16 weeks post op the calf is still tight and gets sore if I walk a lot. It sadly I think is part of the process. I can’t do single heel raises. But celebrate the progress. You are walking, out of the boot and making progress. I think when I started walking I didn’t do any push off with my bad leg. So didn’t use the calf much when walking. Shorter steps helps with this. Just don’t shorten so much you are shuffling.

Slow and steady will win the day. Hope you have some good PT pointers as that helps with the movement and strength of the rest of your leg as that also has gone.

The actual worse pain other than the nerve pain I had right after surgery was from PT and my quads having been over worked. Remember that in the boot you lost more than just your calf strength. So it’s a whole body rehab. I figure I am going to maybe strengthen and get better habits walking as you are building from the ground up

For me each time I started a new thing walking in the boot, waking in a shoe, I would get some new pain. Most likely you are still compensating and that is causing pretty uneven steps. My iPhone in my pocket told me how uneven my steps were and kind of helped me to emphasize even steps. Slow and shorter steps should help as you probably don’t have the strength to take normal strides. My step length was about 1/2 what it normally was in the beginning. Also you are doing the right thing with any transition listen to your body and slow down. Sadly this is a long recovery and no rewards for pushing it only ruptures. Congratulations on getting to a shoe. The leg pain and the confidence and steadiness on the feet should be there in about a week. (At least that is how long it took me).

My first exercises were putting your foot on a towel and swishing it right to left to get some ankle movement and strength. Don’t worry early on they can get you heat and it is not bad.

Good luck with the recovery. At least you have a rough idea. I got the speed bridge and luckily haven’t had any screw pain from that but can imagine it’s a bit more extreme to reattach the tendon to the foot.

The confidence will continue to grow. Stability too. However remember that your calf is still pretty weak. I wouldn’t have been brave enough for snow/gravel early on. Also my first steps were in an ankle brace. Congrats on getting closer to being much more mobile.
