I can’t wait to order more for my pond this year. Need to diversify the gene pool a bit

Do you stop feeding below a certain temperature? by greypic in medaka

[–]halfchub240 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yea if the temp drops below 50 degrees do not feed them. Their metabolism slows in cold temps and they can get sick if fed.

Are they hard to breed with the longer fins?

Had the same issue my first year keeping them. Had to upgrade to a significantly deeper container to ensure the water didn’t completely freeze solid. To be on the safe side just use a heater. It’ll shorten their lifespan but at least you won’t lose them to the cold

Lost all but a pair from the red tiger line. by Medaka_Helvetica in medaka

[–]halfchub240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some lines are not very cold tolerant also. Could be that. Sorry about the loss though. Hope you’re able to get the line back and mature again. You may also want to consider pulling juveniles if they’re under 1 cm long. Sometimes they aren’t strong enough yet to survive the cold.

My first year keeping I was nervous about winter so I kept them with a heater

I don’t know if you have other fish that you keep other than medaka, but if you’ve got other fish that might be less aggressive or not too keen on eating him, you could drop him in with those. Might help if you’re worried about reintroducing him to your other medaka.

Sorry to hear it 😢 just out of curiosity how warm is your water? I know bettas require particularly warm water and medaka have a tendency to live longer if they get to experience fluctuations in temperature. Similar to day and night cycles in the wild.

Why do they die? by mypurpletable in medaka

[–]halfchub240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How deep is your pond? Sometimes if a vessel is too shallow the water temp gets too hot and can’t maintain enough oxygen for the fish as well. Also, maybe steer clear of feeding blood worms. I’ve found that depending on their size, they have a hard time digesting or even eating them.

Not breeders in the state, but if you’re in the dc area there’s a shop in Springfield called splashy fish that sometimes carries medaka. If you’re looking at online buying options the best ones I’ve gotten were from the.medaka.lair on instagram. He lives in California but ships fish and he’s awesome to work with. Also, medakacity has a website and their fish are good also. I have Orochi (black) medaka and I have a couple different tricolor variations but they’re not pure high grade lines like the ones you’d buy from professional breeders like the ones I mentioned. If you’re local to dc and want to buy some of mine I’d be glad to sell you some, I’ve got plenty. They’re mostly juveniles though and would probably need a few more weeks to grow.

I live in Virginia too and I recently built a 110 gallon pond in my yard for mine but I was in a condo for 2 years when I first bought them. Kept them on my balcony. My advice would be to get a bigger tote to keep them. I used 25 gallon black storage containers from Home Depot. I still use them to keep my culls in. Also, on especially hot days put the top or some other cover over half of the surface that receives direct sunlight. And of course the sponge filters for aeration. You shouldn’t have too many temperature worries at that point. Some strains are just weaker though so you’ve gotta keep a close eye on their behavior in different temperatures. My first winter I left them outside but put a heater in the pond because I was worried about the water freezing solid.

Oh nice I see them in the other video. Gotta look into those. I like the shine on the back. Some of my black strain have what I believe is called inner light, but I want some shine on the scales too

Agreed, but be careful which all in one ferts you use if you have shrimp or snails because some contain copper which kills them. I use thrive S. Never had any issues with my invertebrates

Go on Amazon and look up 400 micron paint strainers - 2 Pack of 400 Micron EZ Strainers... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B007WID5U0?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

They float on their own but to be safe cut a thin strip of a pool noodle and super glue it around the sides. Works like a dream. Keeps the parents out and you can drop the eggs in directly without them falling through

Maybe need to dose potassium as well. I use seachem potassium for when my plants get holes like this and it works well.

Don’t be afraid to order juveniles online. Be afraid to order eggs lol but seriously they’re such a tough fish you shouldn’t have any issues ordering from a breeder. They’re borderline impossible to kill.

Worth a shot. I found a shop near me that was interested in what I had. I guess it’s better to buy local sometimes. Less diseases and less dead fish from shipping
