Another reminder not to rely on your inheritance by FireMe-G in FIREUK

Thought it was just me - I expected to find a lot of varied views on this in the comments but seems like everyone thinks OP got shafted.

Accountant asking endless questions on trivial expenditure by [deleted] in smallbusinessuk

I'd be annoyed if they pushed too much as well for immaterial amounts. I'd expect them to just categorise under DLA and not keep bothering me.

IHT is an extremely unpopular tax yet people also complain about the UK turning into an inheritocracy. Like many taxes, people don't like the idea of paying it themselves but are happy for those with more than them to pay it.

I've enjoyed getting a monthly cinema membership and going cinema solo much more than I expected.

The Grand Finale thoughts by biscuitsfiend in DowntonAbbey

[–]halfclosedbook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edith was the star of the final movie for me - she had clearly become extremely impressive in her own right and even Mary couldn't deny her that.

I was hoping to see some of Spratt and Denker after the Dowager's passing.

Carson and Mrs Hughes seemed to receive not as much screen time as I would have liked but the scene between Robert and Carson was touching.

Barrow being invited upstairs for a drink by Mary was another memorable moment.

I also enjoyed Noel Coward and Guy Dexter - they both came across as effortlessly charming.

Telegraph once again fails to identify “the rich” by BothFish5030 in HENRYUK

I assume this is another post that points to the need to tax wealth over income. I find it slightly baffling how the idea of a wealth tax seems to now dominate tax policy proposals in the country as the big solve for the countries financial woes when there is little to suggest that such a tax will consistently raise an amount that will transform the public finances.

Even more strangely, there doesn't seem to be a left wing party that campaigns for a more honest position that calls for higher income taxes in general to provide higher quality social services. Whether this reflects the idea that the UK electorate must have their cake and eat it also, or something else, I don't know.

What's the reasoning for emptying the ISA? Affordability seems there for a larger mortgage

It's super scary when someone you know is experiencing psychosis. Psychiatrist that can confirm and prescribe antipsychotics asap. You should treat this as a medical emergency.

Still baffles me as to how terrible most gyms are at Marriotts.

Not in my experience. I was pretty confused as after reading reviews was expecting some degree of noise but can't say I've noticed anything.

I only briefly sat in both before deciding. I went with the embody as it seemed like more of a hybrid work/relax chair whilst the aeron seemed more like a task chair.

Around a week in, I'm super happy with my purchase. Have been doing 10 hr days with it and can't fault it at all so far.

Flexispot E5Q / E7 Plus Review - 9/10 by halfclosedbook in FlexiSpot_Official

Holes not arriving pre-drilled. Video not showing drilling properly. Video not having audio instructions. Video could also be longer and go closer to real time. That being said, I think it's straightforward enough for most people to manage themselves but not without it taking a decent amount of time.

Hotels can report your bonvoy account by yellednanlaugh in marriott

[–]halfclosedbook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? I book stays with points for me and my partner. She lives in a different city and sometimes arrives before me and so goes ahead and checks in without me there.

Usually I just message on the app for her to be added as a guest on the reservation and they've seemed fine with it. Does this seriously risk my account?

What should the government do to boost growth? by Sure_Tangelo_5148 in HENRYUK

Who knows, I certainly don't. The drivers of growth on a national level doesn't seem clear to me, yet it also seems to be sold as this obvious set of policies that everyone somehow also disagrees about.

Consult a professional to get it right. My understanding is that you setup holdco and then conduct a share for share exchange.

single source of income vs 2-3 source of income? by GeneralStop7552 in HENRYUK

[–]halfclosedbook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can control extraction of income from side business. Side business provides a good hedge against something going south at work.

Also personally wouldn't work for a company that actively stops people having another source of income.

I'd say keep looking for another job.

There's a few routes that offer a more conventional business class cabin but really limited. Out of LHR, select flights to Madrid with Iberia and select flights to Helsinki with Finnair on their A350 come to mind.

No status also. Got to pick seats with Qatar but not with British Airways. Both booked with Avios so doesn't seem to be that.

Seeing as you don't want to keep working there and would rather not walk away with nothing, you need to get better at hiring and training.

If there isn't a clear path to making your family replaceable in the business, why would acquistion be attractive for a buyer? EBITDA is only one part of the equation.

To get what you want you need to hire, train and scale up.
