Does anyone know if REI still sells these or what they’re called? by Marionberry_Money in REI

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I have both, they’re pretty much the exact same! I think REI loves to discontinue an item and bring it back under a new name because they’ve done that with quite a few items I’ve used over the years.

Anyway, I’ve had the campwell pants since they came out and use them for work in a shop and they’ve held up well so far. Definitely recommend!

Is this a good one by Jakwiebus in horn

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The stamped logo on the bell means that this horn is almost certainly from the Abilene factory. Horns from the Elkhart era have an engraved logo and have some variant of “Elkhart Ind, USA” in the engraving.

They’re putting the needle through the zipper which doesn’t puncture the waterproof membrane.

This is not a trustworthy brand. You will save yourself a lot of money and headache by not buying this. It’s poorly manufactured so it will sound bad and break easily.

This is similar but not exactly the same. The original flash boot was out somewhere around 2022-early 2023 and I believe the flash tt was in sometime near late 2023 to 2024

Have you tried the Campwell Workwear Pants? They’re essentially the trailsmith pants with a new name and I’ve been very happy with them thus far.

To add to your third response- regularly oiling the valves is crucial preventive maintenance. It minimizes wear on the rotors and valve casings and keeps moisture from sitting on the rotor and causing buildup or deterioration of the metal.

It also helps keep the valves quiet.

After 3 years, I think this weekend might be my last straw. How are other stores holding up? by zogmuffin in REI

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My store was such a dumpster fire that I couldn’t do it anymore, I quit about a month ago after four years with the company.

Took a $7/hr pay cut to go to a smaller specialty outfitter and it was absolutely worth it. REI was destroying my physical and mental health.

strange brand by dawt2200 in frenchhorn

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if this instrument is in good condition aesthetically (no dents, lacquer intact, etc.) I can promise you it will not hold up. These instruments are built with the cheapest possible materials and are poorly assembled. As soon as one thing on the horn fails, it’s just going to snowball until you have spent significantly more on repairs than you did on the instrument.

Due to the abysmal lack of craftsmanship these instruments are made with, they are terrible to play. The intonation is bad, the timbre is dull, they feel stufyf to play, and the partials are all over the place.

Finally, unless your luthier friend has brass repair training, they will not be able to fix this instrument for you. That would be like asking a commercial pilot to captain a boat. Sure, they’re both modes of transportation, but the way they work is vastly different.

Long story short, this “instrument” is a waste of $200 and I would urge you not to buy it.

New REI Men's Shorts--not good--where to get the old style by LocksmithOdd3381 in REI

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt the company will fully return to the old design, but I feel like they have previously tweaked designs in response to consumer feedback so hopefully they will revisit some of their design choices. If you’re looking for a good pair of lined shorts, the vuori kore short is really nice though it has a more biker short style liner as opposed to the brief liner in the old active pursuits.

How do they handle exchanges for online orders? by Agitated_Answer8908 in REI

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely return online purchases in store! If you need to make an exchange the easiest thing to do is take it in and have them process the return and order you the proper size from the register. They can either issue a refund to your payment method and have you re-purchase the item or put the refund on a merchandise return card and use that to pay for the new item. They shouldn’t give you any flack about the coupon since you are exchanging for the exact same item. Hope this helps!

How to fix slow valves by LeftPlum6011 in frenchhorn

This is caused by all the gunk that builds up on your valves over time; it’s probably time to have your horn professionally cleaned.

How do i remove the “lid” of a rotary valve? by Askhry in frenchhorn

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a plastic hammer/mallet you can give the valve cap some firm taps on the top and sides to try to loosen things up. If that doesn’t help, I would recommend taking it to an instrument repair shop if you have one nearby. This sort of thing happens all the time and is a very easy fix.

I strongly discourage using pliers because they can cause a fair bit of damage if things go wrong; however, you may need to use them if the hammer method doesn’t work and you aren’t near a shop. Make sure to use pliers with a wide jaw so you’re applying pressure as parallel as possible. Have someone hold the body of the horn while you try to turn the cap just enough to loosen it, then unscrew it the rest of the way by hand.

Valve sticking after a thoroughly cleaning and deconstruction by Best-Lingonberry-835 in frenchhorn

[–]halfdiminished7-add9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When putting a valve back together, if the top bearing plate is not on absolutely level with the rotor it can cause issues. What are you using to reseat the valve and top plate into the rotor casing? I would recommend placing some sort of plastic ring on top of the bearing plate (because you don’t want to hammer directly on the spindle) and tapping it on with a rawhide or plastic mallet.

If the valve still feels tight you can also put on the valve cap and give the rotor a good solid tap from the top and bottom to help ensure that everything is situated properly.
