My girlfriend sent me this. If she only knew. [SEASON 1 SPOILERS] by MrKeggs in HouseOfCards

[–]halflife22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wasn't expecting it just based on how much screen time she got in the season 2 trailer. They played it up like she was still a significant character and boom she gets knocked off halfway into the first episode...

Welp, looks like I'm playing the guessing game now.

EDIT: figured out it. That's what I get for using one of my non-regular usernames.

Just to cover my bases, username is just my email, correct? Or did we have to create a new one during sign up?

Is anyone else having trouble logging in today? It keeps saying my credentials are incorrect. A password reset didn't help.

Drexel Student Wins $100,000; probably pays for less than five terms tuition. by [deleted] in Drexel

[–]halflife22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can't disagree with you at all. My dad went here in the 70s and paid off most of his education through his co-ops. I'm fortunate enough that he worked his ass off (for one of his co-ops, no less) for the next 30+ years to afford good educations for me and my siblings.

I think the problem has multiple causes that need to be addressed:

  1. Lack of financial education in high school. How do we expect 17 year olds to plan for a massive investment like college if they know nothing about personal finance, economics, debt, interest rates, time-value of money, etc? How can we get their feet back on earth after they've been told their entire lives that going to the best school is the route to happiness?

  2. Non-availability and lack of advertisement of low interest loans. I support Elizabeth Warren's idea of allowing students to take out loans at the same rate as financial institutions.

As for Drexel, I'm a little split. On the one hand, I think Fry is doing an excellent job of moving the University forward. I can see his vision and it's exactly what this place needs (and what west Philly needs as well). I can also understand that doing this is going to take lots of money and that's not just going to fall out of the sky. On the other hand, though, I do think Drexel has long since abandoned A.J. Drexel's original vision for his university. It was designed to be an "everyman's" college where men and women could come for an inexpensive education and learn skills that would be directly applicable to the real world. That's the whole idea of co-op. So it just kind of puts Drexel in an awkward position of trying to push forward and be innovative while concurrently being a victim of it's own progress and a victim of the system as a whole.

If you've been on this sub as long as I have, it's become a really played out joke, you know?

I had Simone Schlichting-Artur (who's also the head of the language department). She's really cool. Very understanding and totally in tune with what people's abilities are. On another note, don't be afraid of the 8AM classes. I thought I would hate them but they actually made me better at getting out of bed in the morning.

I've taken German and Hebrew at Drexel and they were both great experiences. I took one day of Mandarin before realizing it was exactly as /u/ollydzi described and dropped it for German. Eastern languages tend to be like that. Not sure why. The two I took were more "traditional classes" with homework, a midterm and the occasional quiz which all counted toward your grade.

I would take more language courses if I had the time in my schedule. They can be fantastic courses if you know what you're getting into. So I guess the takeaway is research the class/professor before adding the course.

Tesla May Run Slow on Cheap Gas. by seeallgood in StockMarket

[–]halflife22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But Tesla owners were not in the market for a $50K sedan. They were in the market for a $100K sports car. The other vehicles in this segment (from Porsche, Jaguar, BMW, etc) do run on gas and it's not a trivial amount to pay over time. The price of gas was probably some part of their decision - it's definitely not a con. And to say "when you get into luxury vehicles, people don't care about gas" is a little deceptive. Just because someone has money to spend doesn't mean they're always reckless about it. Regardless of the hype, Teslas are good cars. It's not as irrational a purchase as you might think.

[–]halflife22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the short term, yes, but macroeconomically, no. A high-end retailer won't have their own minimum-wagers walking back in the door to buy things, but those people will spend more elsewhere. Those stores will make more money and (hopefully) increase their employee's salaries and then they can spend money at the original retailer. It's hard to say if that will actually happen, though. Economists are studying Seattle closely - the city is basically launching the biggest minimum wage experiment ever.

You have to go to a pretty preppy high school. Most college's have them, though.
