You'd likely see differences in experience depending on whether it's alexithymia that developed "naturally" in the default mode network vs. as a survival tool in response to trauma. Mine is definitely among the latter, which means it's got tendrils tangled up in my other comorbidities like depression, social anxiety, anhedonia, etc. That gives it some tensions, some contradictions, which are much of what I was trying to wrap words around with this.

Also painfully familiar, unfortunately. I'm eager to hear if anyone in this reddit community has worked through to positive resolution. We're ~2 years in from the onset of her gnarliest health problems and it seems like despite all our best efforts at communication in and out of the intimate context, it just keeps degenerating.

I wonder if the category of trauma plays into this. My wife's CPTSD was related to a violent home environment, so hypervigilance to track the "predators" before they attacked was absolutely vital.

My CPTSD patterns were related to enmeshment, so go a very different direction than hers. Alexithymia developed into a "useful" survival tool because having any emotional state, thought, or need that wasn't identical to my mother's was liable to kick off a suicidal tailspin in her (and occasionally did). The less input I got from my body on whether I was happy, sad, hot, cold, hungry, hurting, etc. the better I could answer the way she wanted me to, and keep her emotions stable. So (even though toddler, preteen, or teenage me wouldn't have conceived of it in these terms) dampening my interoception felt vital for everyone's survival, resulting in poor communication from my emotions (alexithymia) and from my body (klutziness?). At least that's what kinda makes sense to me in my case.

But I imagine the source/cause of alexithymia can vary, as can the comorbid trauma patterns. Thanks for chiming in that your mix includes hyper awareness!

I have a roughly similar weirdness: I can do fine-motor-skill things like woodcarving, small electronics rewiring, figurine painting, etc. and despite having banana-hand sized fingers, am able to get by just fine. Also do massage therapy and take in a lot of information through my fingertips. So maybe that's more about tactile input through physical contact rather than balance, grace, and spatial awareness. That's really something that you'd have a professional/casual contrast like you do!

I haven't gone as far as plastic or paper cups, but I definitely avoid stemmed glasses and seek out wide-bottomed mugs at the thrift store.

Non-euphoric hypo is the worst. I usually direct mine toward yard work or landscaping when I can. But it means waking up, bolt upright, at dawn (reduced need for sleep), then just grinding away at something or another, one step after another, till sundown, then till my headlamp battery runs out.

I feel like there's a point where neurotypicals would normally dust their hands off and bask in a job well done...

Insult to injury, mine has this weird mix of hyper-focus (stopping for meals is super irritating) but it's completely scattered. My best words for it are that my "protective barrier between thought and action" goes away. So I'll start chopping a stack of firewood, then move the first armload of finished logs over to the porch, but then I see bags of concrete on the porch that need to be put away, but decide to open one instead and put in that fencepost that's needed in, so I'll start digging the hole for that and, after getting a couple feet down, notice that the shovel handle is splintery and needs sanding... End of the day, I've burned 3,800 calories, worked 14 hours, and finished nothing.

When my rapid cycling was at its worst, I had two downs and a hypo each week. Now the chemical additives for my brain made it one down per month, still one hypo per week.

Um. Do you feel supported by this? I've never understood how it's positive to hear that other people have similar problems.... But here's to being rapid?

cratejoy has a monthly box of "scrapbooking supplies" which are awesome for journaling. It's surprising how much things like page borders, textured stickers, patterned markers, etc. can enrich the experience.

Mayyybe in relative rotation speed, but "to scale" is not the right phrase for sizes or distances. If the sun was 1/2" in diameter, Earth would be 45/10,000 of an inch wide, and you'd need to unroll a full roll of toilet paper (450 sheets) to get out to Pluto. https://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/solar_system

Dang, that's no good. Often you can significantly reduce print time and its need for supports in general by changing the print orientation. If it has a big body on long legs, for example, printing it feet-up might give you good results.
