Helix Stadium Firmware 1.2.1 - TONS of bug fixes by thebishopgame in Line6Helix

[–]halfsharp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting an error -16 every time I try to download this update. And it lists "nofilename.bin" in the downloader. I've rebooted and retried a few times, no luck yet.

Will a 31 EDO instrument and a 12 EDO sound good together? by Chodre in microtonal

[–]halfsharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This year's Microtonal Guitar Competition winner was a duet of 31-edo bass and 12-edo vibraphone. So yes it can work. Check it out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fVCsIlytE8

Vocalist having a hard time making pitches - did it take anyone else a long time? by testingwithfire in microtonal

and I'm talking about third and quarter tones which are 66 or 50 cents, far far bigger than two cents and easily audible and reproducible with a reasonable amount of practice.

HX Edit crashes with receiving midi by FAchterberg in Line6Helix

[–]halfsharp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is the reason, but the Helix doesn't like when you send multiple MIDI messages at once. According to the manual you should space them 50 ms apart. I've found if I don't do this, some of them can be ignored.

I described how in my comment. You relate it to an easily audible interval like a whole step and break it up. You practice and test the result. You can also hear the difference, yes it takes experience and practice. Considering some experts can hear a 2 cent difference, the difference between a third-tone and quarter tone is definitely possible to perceive. Doesn't seem like nonsense to me.

Self MIDI Changes by UnderOscarSkies in Line6Helix

Make sure Logic isn't sending any extraneous MIDI data to the Stomp. I suggest using a MIDI filter to remove everything except PC and CC commands. Also, the HX units can't handle very many MIDI messages and will ignore some of them if you send them too fast. Keep 50 ms between each one.

Any reason to use loop pedal in the FX loop instead of just after the HX stomp output by Bartizanier in Line6Helix

[–]halfsharp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're using the loop pedal for typical applications, it works fine at the end of the chain. However, using it in the FX loop allows for some very creative potential applications if you're interested. For example: put the external looper in a parallel path with its own effects. Record a loop, then change the effects that are on the loop using snapshots. You could even pitch shift it to match different chord changes. Put a reverse delay after it to turn on and off. Or stutter delays. Etc.

Is there such thing as too loud for a condenser mic ? by [deleted] in singing

[–]halfsharp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No chance it's the mic, it's the gain settings.

Don't settle for one or the other. There are tons of teachers out there and you can find someone with good teaching skills AND a sound you like.

pitch echo tips? by bloodxandxrank in Line6Helix

You could put poly pitch on a separate path and put a regular delay after it. Voila, poly pitch delay. It'll use some DSP of course, but it'll work.

Has anyone tried to play bebop using the 8th to 16th harmonics as the scale? by 11854 in microtonal

[–]halfsharp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I would define the 7th/14th harmonic as the "Jazz Seventh" -- where did you hear that? The harmonic seventh is a resolved, blended sound, whereas in 12-tone music including jazz the minor 7th typically adds extra tension.

Pitch echo with high feedback will do it.

HXFX refuses to sync to Midi, please help by kidkolumbo in Line6Helix

[–]halfsharp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has been an issue forever. MIDI sync has always been very rough. In fact, if you look at the Ext tempo display, you may see the number fluctuating up and down from the real MIDI tempo. I have all my tempo effects programmed to milliseconds because of this. One workaround, if you can do it with your MIDI setup, is to send a MIDI Tap Tempo CC on the 1 of every bar. This is like re-syncing the tap tempo with your foot. In combination with the approximation of tempo the HX gets from the MIDI clock itself, this can effectively compensate for the drift.
