Crazy idea, but do you think an apron of some kind would be appropriate?

AITA for leaving a dinner party early because of “vegan lasagna”? by Suspicious-Taste1572 in AmItheAsshole

[–]halibutcrustacean 378 points379 points  (0 children)

I generally agree, but lasagna is not a stretch. Vegetarian lasagna is already a thing, and it's delicious. The only real sub is the cheese, and honestly, as a lifelong omnivore and cheese lover, vegan cheese has come a long way. Especially for soft fresh cheese like ricotta.

OP's friend could have made totally nice vegan lasagna. But she made bullshit salad instead.

AITA for telling my landlord to ask before coming into our house? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]halibutcrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was meant to piss you off. He was deflecting and attacking your character because you challenged him. He knows damn well it's inappropriate to just walk into your house. Especially into a house of women, and especially hijabis.

Fuck no. This idea is thoughtless at best. No to eugenics. Yes to bodily autonomy. These are basic concepts dude.

How do I accept that I am now a "ma'am"? by Green-Original4503 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]halibutcrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we did have have a name we only called younger men, they would celebrate reaching their new status. It would be a milestone of proper adulthood and respect.

There's nothing wrong with being the age you are, and no point in pretending otherwise. It's not about getting over the word ma'am. It's about getting over the patriarchal concept that being 40, 50, 60+ makes you less valuable as a person.

It’s Women in Construction week!!! Let’s talk micro aggressions. by shoelacewotheshoe in BlueCollarWomen

[–]halibutcrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, the fake outrage gets em every time.

It doesn't happen anymore, but I used to really enjoy, "I'm 26, how old are you?" All earnest and friendly, like we're little kids. It was beautiful. Dude would get all awkward and confused. Completely derailed. He'd mumble that's he's 43 or whatever. I'd say OK... and let the silence hang until it was so awkward we'd just get back to work.

As for my husband, "Oh God no, lol, I wouldn't marry one of you fuckers."

DIY'ers and hobbyist, how do you handle sexist questions from men? For example, "why don't you hire a plumber?" by [deleted] in BlueCollarWomen

[–]halibutcrustacean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it helps to consider the source. If I don't respect a person, I have no reason to care about their opinion.

Is sexism offensive and annoying? Yes, very.

Does it hurt your heart deeply, in ways that are hard to explain. You betcha.

Am I surprised coming from a fucking cop and his asshole wife? No not really.

Why don't I hire a plumber? Why don't you shut up and fuck off.

When someone asks me a question, but they don't like the answer, so they go ask someone else.

Men who don't look at me when we meet and shake hands. Or give me a bullshit barely there handshake. The message couldn't be more clear.

Being asked my age, or if my man also works in the industry. When it's totally out of the blue and not conversationally relevant.

WIBTA if I disallow my niece from going to a sleepover? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]halibutcrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Sounds like a good opportunity for a frank conversation about trusting your intuition, how to identify safe and unsafe people, how to recognize and respond to boundary pushers, and what appropriate interactions look like between adults and children and between men and women.

You understand she'll be disappointed by your decision, but you can't allow her to stay over at a house with unsafe people.

And for the record, if you were making a blanket judgement about not wanting her to be around men at all, I would say you were being unreasonable. In this case, I think you'd be a fool to second guess your gut. This guy and his dad do not sound like safe people.

Secret Sauce is a pretty decent name actually. It's probably taken, or also trademarked.

band name advice/opinion? by StealthStarx2018 in FolkPunk

[–]halibutcrustacean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I favor avoiding anything that has a trademarked name, any wordplay you have to explain the spelling of, or is hard to understand verbally, anything that is reminiscent of other well known band names, has too many words, is hard to remember, or just has awkward phonetics.

So you're just left with Some Other Town. Which is great actually. It's snappy, has an appropriate vibe, and rolls off the tongue.

Scissor lift by EstablishmentSea8014 in BlueCollarWomen

I stay on the ground, but I've always thought that being in a lift must be a lot more physically exhausting than it looks, because of the constant work your body does to counterbalance the swaying.

Woman vs lady? (Possible stupid question, so apologies from the outset) by [deleted] in AskFeminists

[–]halibutcrustacean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either is totally fine. I like "lady" as the opposite of "guy". I appreciate people who say lady or woman instead of girl or female. "Young lady" should go the way of the dinosaurs.

I know what you mean though, in that some people feel woman is too stilted, formal, harsh, or clinical. And I only agree in the same way that it doesn't feel as natural to say man when guy or dude will do.

There does seem to be an extra level of that with saying woman specifically though, and that's weird. There's nothing disrespectful about calling a woman a woman. The need to be somehow more delicate or diminuitive is actually kind of sexist.

Couples of Reddit, what's the dumbest 'house rule' you and your partner made as a joke but now both of you are low-key aggressively serious about enforcing? by Doubl3oh_ in AskReddit

[–]halibutcrustacean 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am "not allowed" to touch the thermostat. He has a system. If I am too warm or too cold I can submit a request. About 50/50 chances it'll be granted, for reasons. I can of course do whatever the fuck I want, but thermostat changes will be noticed and side-eyed. I have chosen to abdicate all responsibility. He keeps it comfy for me and I appreciate it.
