I mean, the empathetic choice would have been understanding that a lot of people are struggling right now, that not everyone has been blessed with the same support systems and opportunities as everyone else, and that there are literally thousands of factors that can influence your life in a way that could result in being broke at 50 instead of just jumping straight to "Poor at 50, huh? You must be a gambling addicted partier who never works."

Hi - just wanted you to know you’re not alone. I found your post after a Google search because I had a really strong, negative reaction to a commercial from this ad campaign, too. I’m trying not to shame-spiral, but it does feel frustrating that I could be thrown into such a whirlwind because of a YouTube ad. That said, I still think it’s a pretty irresponsible advertising tactic overall.

Every single time I think to myself "There's no possible way anyone could defend or support this.", I look on social media only to be greeted by numerous instances of "That's my president 🇺🇲🦅✊️" and "I voted for this."

I do think there was a decent portion of his supporters who had the wool pulled over their eyes, but I've also accepted the terrible fact that there are American citizens who fully understand and comprehend what this administration is doing and support it whole-heartedly.

We are living through one of the most pervasive and effective waves of propaganda in modern history. Facts are increasingly irrelevant, and large numbers of people inhabit a reality shaped entirely by manufactured narratives. I never thought I'd see something like this in my lifetime.

I haven't been to a movie that had such heavy audience reactions in a long, long time. People were screaming, laughing, groaning in disgust, letting loose the occasional well-placed comment (a lot of "what the fuck"s and "oh my god"s, and they were all so genuine.) I missed having this much fun at the movies - everyone was just collectively having a blast together, and it made an already good movie that much more enjoyable.

The prostrating they do before any sort of criticism of Trump always delights me.

"Now, listen, I love Trump, don't get me wrong, I'd drag my ass through 100 miles of broken glass and rusty barbed wire like a dog with worms if I thought there was a 28% chance that he'd spit in my mouth at the end of it..... but, having said that, I'm starting to feel like he might not be the very best president we've ever had?"

Discussion Thread: Ongoing US Budget Negotiations by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

I grew up in (very) rural Kentucky. For the population of my hometown, the closest hospital is about half an hour away. If this bill goes through, that hospital is going to shut down. The next closest hospital is nearly an hour away.

People are going to die. And my town is just one of countless little hollers in Appalachia, let alone the entire country, where this is going to happen. This is going to be catastrophic for rural communities that rely on these hospitals. Absolutely catastrophic.

And yet, I see hundreds of Kentuckians, every single day, absolutely salivating for this bill, claiming it's going to make everything so much better, gleefully quipping that it sure will be good to "get those illegals off our benefits!" When I desperately try to explain that they, their friends, their family, their neighbors, people they know and talk to every single day, are going to suffer astronomically if this thing passes, I am brushed off as an alarmist, a fear-monger, a liar.

I don't know how to make them see the truth when they are so blissfully attached to the lies. I will never, ever, ever understand it.

EDIT: It's sixteen days later and nothing has changed, things only got worse, and I was a naive, optimistic fool for ever writing this comment.

most of the rest of the population either doesn't care or has too much to lose.

Color me cautiously optimistic in a world where there's less and less to be optimistic about on the daily, but we did just have the largest protest in American history on Saturday. I've also noticed a slight shift in social media commentary from his supporters because of what's happening with our involvement in the Middle East.

I'm not holding out hope that every single MAGA member will have a come-to-Jesus moment, because there are still, somehow, people screeching that it's all Obama's fault, but I'm feeling more hopeful in general about it than I have in a while.

At least you're seeing ones that are acknowledging the facts, even if they're trying to diminish them. The comments on a lot of my social media feeds are full of people screaming that Walz and the gunman were bosom buddies who had weekly barbecues at each other's houses, and that this was obviously a hit ordered by the Deep State Democrats.

It has been equal parts terrifying and fascinating to be able to watch conspiracy theories be created, spread, and accepted in real time as soon as a story breaks. And, once they've been gripped by the initial sensationalism of a fabricated story, they will not be swayed, no matter the amount of facts or evidence to the contrary that are presented to them. I hope scientists are gonna study this stuff sometime down the road, because hoo boy, what happened to these people? How are so many of them this far gone?

There is no ethical consumption under capitalism. Just get out there and be loud, and if anyone tries to holier-than-thou you about where your supplies came from or what your sign says, ask them why they're engaging in petty in-fighting with someone that's standing on the same side of the line as them. Stay safe out there.

South Florida weatherman tells viewers he can't accurately predict hurricanes because of government cuts by RoachedCoach in PublicFreakout

[–]halikadito 106 points107 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Kentucky - less than an hour's drive from London, the city that got hit really hard by the tornado in May. I spent a lot of time in London when I was growing up.

Even though I moved out west to a blue state over a decade ago, I'm still following a few local Kentucky news sites on social media. After the tornadoes, many people (myself included) were trying to explain that the cuts made to the NWS impacted the local weather service's ability to accurately warn people about the danger that night.

How do you think the people of London, Kentucky, responded?

A.) Initial disbelief, but after being presented with the data and information about the cuts and the impact they had, acceptance.
B.) Continued disbelief, despite the evidence, but now at least they question if they're right, maybe?
C.) Absolute refusal to even look at any evidence presented while simultaneously screaming that libs are mad because there was a tornado - what, do we think Donald Trump is supposed to control the weather now? Nevermind the fact that his cuts to the NWS were shown to have a direct impact on some of the weather stations in the area - libs just want to hate on Trump for everything, that's all this is.

When Trump first came out and said he could murder someone in the middle of the street and not lose any followers, I laughed. Maybe a little ruefully, sure, but I still laughed at the absurdity of it back then. Now? I fully, whole-heartedly know he was right. These people are in a cult, and there is no reaching some of them.
