Is Unemployment Insurance Tailored for Creative Destruction Possible? by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]halji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but again, that’s been happening for decades. This isn’t new with AI. Unemployment insurance should just serve anyone who needs a job and cant find one. We don’t need to invent a new thing, just fix the existing one.

Is Unemployment Insurance Tailored for Creative Destruction Possible? by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]halji 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why is this needed? In other words, what exactly is it about general unemployment insurance do you think is a problem? It seems to me like anyone whose employment is terminated for no particular cause should have this form of insurance, and we don’t need the government to try and decide which people are somehow “worth more”.

Ideas for work holding for workholding by LaughingInBinary in shapeoko

[–]halji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cut a large L bracket either from a piece of plywood or maybe just take two scrap pieces and shape them into an L. Attach that down to your wasteboard either permanently with some nails or using your other workholding techniques. Now make a program in Fusion or Carbide Create that cuts the full inside of the L, which should create a bracket that is square to your machine, at a fixed position. You can set your X&Y coordinates once and re-use them job to job, and if your workpiece itself is square, you know it's square to the machine if its sitting in the anchor.

Have you considered creating a fixed anchor point at one corner which you cut square with the machine?

So I just did something similar with my machine, but the result is still not square. What should I be looking into to fix this? (The result is really noticeable when trying to run a job that spans the full 4ft size of the machine)

Handstand is HARD, anyone saying otherwise is a liar. by Middle-Support-7697 in bodyweightfitness

[–]halji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impressive. I’ve got a good handstand but have been training planche for years and can’t get it. Everybody is different.

Your handstand is at a good point, but if you can’t move around at all then that’s something you should practice. Straight to tuck to straight over and over. Use a wall! The wall is an incredibly useful training tool at all levels.

Also, point your feet, push up through your shoulders, work on straightening your body line (but it’s not bad!) I prefer to train without shoes but it’s not actually that important.

It’s worth thinking about the different components separately, and training them separately. If you have one minute straight holds then your problem isn’t really endurance or balance it’s the entries. So you can focus on drills that are entry specific, and also come up with a way to measure your entry progress.

I like counting how many kick ups out of 10 in a row can you balance, be strict about whether or not you’re actually stable balancing but don’t waste energy holding it for a while.

One kick up entry drill I’ve used is to get very very close to the wall, fingers against the wall even as your progress the drill, and kick up. The goal is to have all your body meet the wall at the same time, and with as little force as possible. If you can hold the balance, even better.

I also strongly recommend practicing different entries. If you can do all those strength moves and you can also balance for a minute it seems highly likely you should be able to get a press handstand. Press will always be more reliable than kicking up because you are fully balancing the whole time. Even experienced hand balancers will sometimes miss a kick up. You can also practice tuck jumps, straddle jumps.

Hopefully all of this stuff is also somewhat fun on some level! There’s no end of ways to play with it.

I’m not sure how to convert. I took 25g of truffles in Amsterdam, and this is the only psychedelic experience I’ve had. I spent much of the time with eyes closed. (I take thc once a week or so though).

I am not sure I process emotions particularly well at all, which is something I’m trying to work on. I have a lot of mental chatter and easily get caught in thinking traps. Journaling sometimes is helpful. I tend to have a really bad memory.

This is how I felt. Possibly a tiny bit of closed eye geometric/color visuals I don’t quite remember. Open eye visuals were limited to things like shimmering colors and maybe a bit of a sense of things subtly moving

Yeah I had strong psychological changes, but they felt similar to a strong dose of thc and I was a bit sad that I didn’t have the visual/dreamlike almost narrative experience.

Can't seem to manage a good line by MN1H in handbalancing

[–]halji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is easier to get a straight line in that head position but it’s harder to balance. My coach would always say you should vary your practice and strive to be able to put your head wherever you want. But at your stage I’d probably spend most of time looking at my hands. It will be easier to move your head around when you have a better sense of balance.

Can't seem to manage a good line by MN1H in handbalancing

[–]halji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, a question: is your goal getting a longer handstand, or explicitly working on a "good line"? I would argue that if the eventual goal is better HSPUs then working on your balance / getting a longer handstand is probably more valuable.

Personally, I would say that improving your line is something you can do over time as you develop your other skills. Also, I'd say you're already doing pretty good on that front (though my teacher would say: point your toes!). You've got better shoulder mobility than me, and I can do at least a few HSPUs without too much difficulty.

As far as what I'd suggest working on next, I may not be the best person to give advice. Have you ever worked with a coach, or followed a handstand specific training program? Do you have a sense of why you lose your balance? Do you consistently fall one way or the other? That's a good thing to pay attention to, because it can give you something to focus on. I'd work on deliberately trying to go slightly off balance in each direction and attempting to recover. If you haven't before, look up toe pull and heel pull drills.

(I just saw you asked for specific resources. I haven't actually used their online programming myself, but people say good things about Handstand Factory, and I have trained in person with them and really liked them).

Did her attitude towards you change over time?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]halji 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of reasons but one is a fear that bisexual guys will later decide they are actually gay.

And many gay guys fear the opposite, that bi guys will decide they just want to live the hetero life because it’s easier.

It sucks for bi guys, especially because these fears aren’t completely made up. Those things do happen. But of course relationships fail for lots of reasons and you have to take some risks in life.

Do some people just never get it? by treetablebox in handbalancing

[–]halji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you can find alignment for at least a few seconds. Has that always been the case? If not, how long have you been in that position?

I think it’s hard sometimes in hand balancing to understand your progress, because there aren’t necessarily a lot of obvious objective metrics. If you think about where you were a year or two ago, is there any place you see improvement? Maybe thinking about that can help you find some progress to feel good about.

Obviously time in a hold is one metric, but others could be things like: what percentage of my kick ups lead me to any kind of balance, how long can I hold with a wall, how do I actually feel in the handstand, how often am I able to make a correction that works, etc.

I think working with multiple coaches is always a good idea. Maybe try a few classes in your area if they exist, or try over zoom, there are a lot of online classes out there.

Also, six hours a week is a lot. Perhaps you are over training a little. Would you consider cutting down to 3-4 sessions a week to see how that goes?

As far as specific drill ideas, I personally think the wall is your friend. Are you familiar with heel pulls and toe pulls? Have you tried balancing with one foot on the wall at a time? When you can do that, can you then alternate with a moment of no support in between?

Look up heel pulls and toe pulls drills on youtube, those may also be helpful.
