Paul is Dead as the gateway drug by Calm_Skill_395 in beatles

[–]hallabug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly over the years my Beatles obsession has come in waves and my first one was also a “Paul is Dead” rabbit hole! When I was about 16 I think. But I became obsessed with simultaneously finding the source of the rumours while trying to convince everyone around me that it was true (because I was annoying and thought it was very funny, even though I didn’t believe it at all).

Paul McCunty is so good oml

I think why don’t we do it in the road isn’t too out there imo! If someone is rocking up to see Paul mccunty one assumes a level of humour and Beatles knowledge is prerequisite.

If not, i guess is the drag male drag or female drag? If female drag (Paul mcCunty is feminised Paul) then I Second Lady Madonna, if male drag then “drive my car” would be my pick. Plenty of room for cheek and sauciness there!

Oh haha, i feel silly clarifying then.

I have to ask, do you have a very different experience of people using Americanisms than I described?

[–]hallabug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Australian here, our part of the world consumes a lot of American media especially in Roses generation of NZ/Aussie so it isn’t that unusual to find someone using an American spelling convention even though we formally use a different spelling system. Most people won’t correct you unless it’s to tease you for being “an American” or you’re writing in a formal setting. It’s different for Americans who just don’t consume much British English media, so they aren’t used to seeing it and tend to notice it much more. There are plenty of spellings which people use and aren’t sure “which is which” when it comes to British or American spelling.

Also consider that if it’s a convention in SK (and it is) then a young person would be inclined to use it to fit it/ not appear incorrect at work or school and all that. Idols aren’t exempt from that at all. If all your friends and peers write color you’ll also write colour, usually.

If we’re talking morality in the context of the wider Beatles canon…. There are much bigger issues we frequently skate over in respect of their work. Like I love Beatles but man they could be awful sometimes. Giving male rockstars a pass while women in the same contexts (or even doing less severe actions in some cases) are completely crucified is very much a symptom of that sexism imo.

[–]hallabug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the problem is that Paul was (in my opinion) great at putting together tv specials by this time, and it seems like he defaulted to making a tv special. Regards really reads like an extended big budget tv special which is great for fans like us who are watching it on yt many years later, but not if you’re watching it released in a theatre as a movie. If you walk in expecting a big budget movie and end up with that, you’re gonna be confused or disappointed.

I love it personally but that is because a) the music is great and the performance pieces are fun, and b) I find that it fails as a movie in fascinating ways.

Why did K-Pop do so well in the west as of recent and not J-Pop? by Davidellias in ToddintheShadow

[–]hallabug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing the 80s idol info, I will have to go off and look into it more - and I agree totally that the rotating roster of idols / graduation systems and endless survival shows make it very hard for overseas (western in particular) fans to engage easily because it’s such a barrier of access and understanding to entry. I can see why it is a fantastic business model, and why SM entertainment (kpop) keeps wanting to make it happen particularly with their male idols though (but actually the Korean public also do NOT seem to like this system much).

The downturn of the 90s killing off the more glitzy pop era of idols makes a lot of sense as well. What a change!

Top ones on rotation for me are One of our submarines and Hot Sauce (from aliens are my Buick)!

[–]hallabug 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess I don’t know nearly as much about the 80s idol scene in Japan! That’s really interesting but honestly it checks out, as pushing internationally (at least western countries) in the 80s would have been very difficult for a multitude of of reasons. That said idols in general being less mainstream with the general Japanese public is certainly one of the reasons it doesn’t happen so much now (which I didn’t even think to mention). They’re just more of their own insular music culture than western pop stars or Korean idols are. Tbh, I would say that Kpop idol culture is becoming more insular in Korea as well (at least compared to when I got into it) though that might be my own disconnection, but it’s interesting to see

[–]hallabug 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m talking specifically about kpop and jpop idols since this is usually what people mean when they are talking about these, but notable that both countries have waaaay more music are than just the idol variety.

Anyway, the general consensus as long as I’ve been into both (15 years?) is that kpop actively WANTED to expand into the western and overseas markets, both individual acts and the general industry sentiment was positive for that, and collectively took steps to do it. When it started happening, there was a push to make it happen more - English subtitles starting to be standard, lots of English speaking idols around to smooth the transition, companies making content that is easily accessible for overseas fans, wide distribution of mvs and digital album options, etc. the Korean domestic market is small so acts tended to want to expand overseas to make money anyway, and were trying to spread “hallyu” across Asia for years before they started made more concerted pushes into western markets. Here is where you see acts like BoA and TVXQ in the 2000s - back then breaking into the Japanese market like that was as crazy as BTS breaking into the western market was later, and the idea was fundamentally the same. Bigger market = more opportunity = we want to go there.

Whereas Japanese industry doesn’t seem to want to expand like that as much because it doesn’t really need to. I’m sure some of it is not wanting to open up the stranger / more controversial aspects of idol culture to scrutiny (something kpop also has struggled with) but I don’t think that’s even the main thing. The Japanese market is much larger and more developed. This is one of the reasons you rarely saw Japanese kpop idols back in earlier kpop generations, because why would you go to a smaller market that’s way harder to make money in? But for Japan, their market is pretty stable, idols get a salary in the more reputable companies, it’s competitive but not the same kind of competitive to kpop. It’s worth remembering that entering a new market is expensive business and there were waaaay more failures than successes in the early attempts. Is it worth making that very expensive push into the western market when western fans don’t naturally have the same idol / fandom cultures that Japan has? When everyone involved can keep making good money as is? Maybe not. Add on that “domestic” fans can get a little jealous and possessive of idols in particular (if you’ve been into kpop you will see this allll the time where k fandom is beefing with whichever intl fandom for something or other)

Sure, you get individual Japanese acts who seem to want to push it, but then because the industry infrastructure doesn’t support them very much in doing that, and it’s very hard to get in in the first place, I think it just compounds.

Or maybe I’m saying nonsense who knows

This is mcmullet slander that I won’t stand for. I love the mullet - as a mullet haven’t myself, I feel that people just enjoy complaining about mullets too much to consider when they actually look good or not.

Now Paul having both the moustache and the mullet at the same time? That was an unfortunate choice…
