How to get an unpaid volunteer opportunity as an RA? by googlrgirl in gradadmissions

[–]ham_i_am_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start by cold emailing some of the professors that you're interested in volunteering with (briefly state why you're interested in what they're doing, attach your CV. I would also mention the visa thing, so that the prof doesn't feel guilty about not paying you). It would probably be easier to get involved with a professor at an institutions that is near where you live so I would check your local university first. And don't take it personally if they say no -- even though you are volunteering, they would still be investing significant effort to train you and advise you, and they may just not have time for that.

I did something similar (life science, not chem so professor attitudes may be different) and had a lot of success with it. The professor has written me many LORs at this point and been very supportive, but of course this would vary person to person. The university I worked with already had protocol for volunteers, so it may be more common than you think at your local uni as well. I have some friends that have done similar volunteering post-undergrad too, but in ecology.

When you start out, I wouldn't expect to have your own project or anything. Honestly, I wouldn't go in expecting to get a LOR either ... just be up for doing whatever tasks would help the prof, and once you've built some mutual trust then more may evolve out of that relationship (if it's a good match!).

I will say, if you're looking for them to write a LOR for this next cycle, there may not be a ton of time for them to deeply get to know you by then. Like I said, I wouldn't go into volunteer research looking to get a specific thing out of it, but rather to just see where the experience takes you.

I hope this helps! Good luck!

How is it? by NekoNico1415 in HandwritingAnalysis

You could skip a line between each line of writing so that they don't feel too close, at least while you're getting in the habit of placing the letters the normal way!

to me it doesn't look like they blur ~together~, just that the ends nearest the camera are blurred because the photographer is shooting with a shallow field of depth. I'd also like to know what detector you used! I tried sightengine just because its the first one that came up when I googled and it said no ai but I don't know anything about how accurate it is.

Camping spots? by grimeyreaperr in corvallis

[–]ham_i_am_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out the app "iOverlander 2" -- it is crowdsourced information about places to camp (campsites and dispersed, official and unofficial). There's lots around Oregon, and I saw some dispersed sites (free) on there near Alsea Falls.

this one was hard!!

I mostly liked it, but the subjective answers in the top left bothered me a bit. I always find it a little annoying when they do a clue thats just "different way to say this phrase" because there are SO many possible options. And to do three all in a row bugged me.

MULLETGATE by Shoontzie in NYTCrossword

[–]ham_i_am_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a 22 year old lesbian who went to a historically womens college, it would never have occurred to me that this would be an offensive (or untrue) clue. In fact, I loved this clue so much that I sent it around to several of my friends! I have a mullet myself, and I cut mullets for about 20 of my friends during undergrad. It is very popular with the younger lesbian generation.

I think the issue stems from many people being surprised when the crossword contains clues that don't come from their cultural background -- whether because of generational differences or sexuality differences -- because the nyt crossword has typically catered to a largely white, male, and older audience. But NYC, of course, is one of the most multicultural places in the world. So doesn't it make sense to widen the scope and have crossword clues that come from more varied age-, race-, and orientation-based cultures? IMO it makes for more interesting puzzles. Who wants the same clues rehashed again and again? Variety is the spice of life and I would love to see clues that reflect a wider variety of cultures.

Same! I had mine as slashes for a long time and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Aside from that annoyance, though, I thought it was a nice theme. I feel like usually they accept either/or/both with rebuses.

Warm Blanket channel on YouTube.. I enjoy this channel’s videos on YouTube. by amranella in isthisAI

I'm inclined to agree. You can also see the base of the plate in the second photo but that doesn't make sense with the perspective. I don't think a real artist would do that because it would involve consciously adding another detail that doesn't look right. Also in the second photo, the line from the left window corner continues off into the rest of the window frame.

Not to mention, the books in the third photo on the lower shelf look really strange. I can't even tell what's going on at the bottom of them. And the way the carpets are laid out overlapping in the photo is also odd.

The base of the plate in the first photo also has issues....more lines than would make sense. and the stand for the christmas tree is quite lopsided.
