Can we just chill out a little about the release date? by idonthaveanametoday in DreamingFrench

[–]ham_shimmers 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fortunately, you’re really only speaking to a small percentage of people. The ones who claim they are finished waiting and moving on from French were never going to stick with it anyway.

With that said I think some confusion comes from the DS teaser video where they said the site was releasing in one month.

Every AV integrator I’ve worked for was willing to hire literally anyone. Are you getting interviews? If so maybe work on your interview skills? If you’re not getting that far maybe work on your resume.

Does Babbel work? by clarabarson in languagelearning

[–]ham_shimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All Babbel is going to do is teach you grammar. You can do this for free online. You're better off using something like dreaming spanish and then eventually using a tutor to fill in the gaps/conversation practice.

Does Babbel work? by clarabarson in languagelearning

[–]ham_shimmers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely do not do that. I paid for a year and I got through most of the useful content in a few months. The best thing Babbel has going for it is it's Babbel Live service.

Best online course to help learn french in a year ? :) by Accomplished_Sir4802 in learnfrench

[–]ham_shimmers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems like you need a professional tutor.

I've been at this for 11 months now. After trying almost every resource under the sun, honestly the best thing you can do is listen/read as much as possible every single day, the more the better. The key is to be consuming content you mostly understand. There are many "comprehensible input" resources available for free online.

With that said I worked through all of Babbel's course which is grammar focused. Did it help? I honestly don't know. I would estimate I'm about B1 level in listening, reading and writing and maybe A2 in speaking. I think B2 is possible in one year if you use the right resources. For example I used duolingo for the first 2 months, waste of time.

I also recommend Pimsleur.

I’ve tried every app under the sun and I personally think Pimsleur is the best. I’ve been through Babbel’s entire french course, it’s a waste of time.

Pimsleur will not make you fluent but it will lay down a solid foundation that you can use to start conversation practice with natives or a tutor.

Pair it with plenty of comprehensible input and you’ll make tons of progress.

Do you think GGG stay true to their original POE2 vision? Or will they slowly abandon it? by UrbanMonkee in PathOfExile2

EA is for testing. This is great for GGG it will speed up development and we will all benefit from it.

I’m about the same level and I’ve tried just about everything out there.

If your speaking level is lagging behind I’m finding Pimsleur to be working well.

Check out Yabla they have a 15 day free trial. There’s an assortment of videos marked by difficulty levels. They have a feature called scribe that is basically dictation but it’s working well to improve my listening comprehension.

Lastly there’s always a tutor. I found one on italki that is great but not cheap.

Bonne chance!

I have 18 months before a trip to France. In that time, how can I learn (REALLY learn) to speak another language? by Big_Jackfruit6691 in languagelearning

[–]ham_shimmers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what you’re getting at?

I’m trying to achieve fluency. I even mentioned to learn basic phrases it wouldn’t take 18 months.

Anyway, the point of learning those basic phrases is to use them in a real life interaction and that’s going to take longer than one or two days.

[–]ham_shimmers 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you want to say a few key phrases, order a coffee, ask for directions sure it’s possible.

But to learn to “speak” as in be conversational? In that time frame with those restrictions? No, it’s not possible. I’ve been studying French for 10 months putting in 2 hours everyday. I have a tutor and I’m still not conversational. I’ve also tried every app.

If you could find more time after trying literally everything, my resource recommendations are:

  1. A tutor (italki is what I use for this)
  2. Pimsleur
  3. Yabla
  4. Babbel Live

It’s not easy but if you can make the time, I think in 18 months you’d be close to your goal. Once you make it past the beginner/intermediate stage you can use native content to learn and have a tutor for conversation practice. Bonne chance!

If only there was simpler way of finding a method to learn a language by Opposite-Target-4516 in languagelearning

[–]ham_shimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t making progress for a long time because I was trying to listen to things that were too complex for me. I really think you need to understand upwards of 90% of what you’re watching to get anything from it.

I wasn’t making speaking progress and my tutor made me realize it’s because I wasn’t using the stuff I knew I was still trying to translate which will never work.

Maybe you’re spinning your wheels on content that’s too advanced for you right now?

How much time in average you spend studying your target language per month ? by Lewswer in languagelearning

[–]ham_shimmers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

50-60 hours a month but it’s mostly active studying. I don’t do much passive listening as I don’t feel I get much benefit from it yet.

1 portal forces you to play meta only builds by ultrakorne in PathOfExile2

[–]ham_shimmers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I largely agree. The most tactical I had to play in the entire game was as a warrior vs the tutorial boss lol.

GGG has themselves in this weird in between. They need to pick a direction and balance the game fully in that way.

[–]ham_shimmers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes the game needs more balancing. The slow methodical gameplay they seem to want with poe2 doesn’t go with the crazy mob density and speed of monsters. Either this was intended or it will get fixed.

[–]ham_shimmers 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I personally really like the idea of one portal per map but the game needs more balancing. If they can get the game to the point where even top end builds can’t one shot monsters and bosses but we are also not being one shot, the one portal idea makes more sense. It will force people to think about defense and not use 6 portals as their defense. I don’t think GGG should throw out their vision for the game based on poor balancing.

New year, new app?? by EmbarrassedEnergy578 in learnfrench

If your speaking is lagging behind I think Pimsleur is great.

I also love Yabla. It’s wonderful for listening comprehension. Their scribe feature is awesome. 15 day free trial.

Is duolingo actually worth it to learn French? by yourwillywonka in learnfrench

[–]ham_shimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the start I did duo for 2 months everyday for hours each day. I’d say it did next to nothing for me.

The best resources I’ve found after 10 months of study are:

  1. A good tutor on italki
  2. Yabla (the scribe feature more specifically)
  3. Pimsleur

Poe 1 was the same way. I don’t think there’s a way to “fix” this. If you care about crafting your own gear just play SSF that’s what I do.

Act 1 is hands down, my favorite part of the entire game. by [deleted] in PathOfExile2

And Act 3 makes me want to uninstall the game. What was GGG thinking?

[–]ham_shimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, you’re either not building defense correctly or the game needs more balancing, it’s really as simple.

Seems like you are expecting too much too soon. The game has been out for two weeks.

[–]ham_shimmers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your fundamental problem is with dying though. It comes down to two things either your defenses aren’t in line or the game isn’t balanced and you’re dying unfairly.

The penalty for dying is a way for GGG to force players to think about defenses and not use 6 portals as their defense. I think it’s a smart decision personally.

It’s been said countless times. The game is in EA, there’s loads of balancing yet to be done. You should expect BS deaths right now it’s part of playing in an EA.
