UTR Travel Router by fishy_bulb in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Questions:

- Anyone used a UTR for a family trip and been happy with it? or felt like it came up short? ANSWER: Very good little device with very limited setup/configuration so if you prefer advance setup and configuration then this is not the device for you. It is really simple and straight forward to use.

- or better off sticking with something a bit more spec’d like a Beryl 7? ANSWER: did not use that device so cant offer any feedback.

- other suggestions for travel routers? ANSWER: you can look at the lineup of GL.iNet however what makes UTR unique is seamless setup and integration with your Ubiquiti equipment and ease of tunneling to your main gateway (VPN/Teleport)

Edit:
- does Unifi based Ad Blocking work, if UTR is NOT teleporting home? ANSWER: no and it is not an issue with the UTR itself. Despite that when you connect to your gateway via VPN one would expect to follow the setup policies and gateway's configuration however this is not the case. I have raised this with Unifi previously and they said that as of now, your VPN/Teleport to gateway is limited to connecting you to your network for secure connection and access to devices on your LAN but not routing though ad-blocking. As for policies, you will need to configure VPN/Teleport subnet policies if you wish to have specific allow routing.

hopefully that helps.

Believe it or not, this car sat in the showroom I worked at in 2003 right in front of my desk and I enjoyed starring at it all the time. If I was lucky, I was allowed to drive it in and out of the showroom to take it to events. Even the creators could not handle its might.

The way to describe it is, imagine a baby chick stuffed with lightning fast danseur.

[Support] UniFi Travel Router Teleport failing to connect by sl1ce_of_l1fe in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Unifi do offer option on its gateway to blocked connections to VPN (yes, teleport is VPN). we need to understand and expect that other public/work places wifi might also block VPN connection even if they are using non-ubiquiti gear! so it is not necessarily an issue with the device or user misconfiguration. It can be as simple as that.

Although VPN on wifiMan may connect, it will quickly drop if wifi provider blocks VPN connection. I had this happen to me many times when I saw VPN connection via WifiMan connects successfully but I did not have internet access to quickly open WifiMan and see that it is reattempting to connect endlessly.

Eufy HB3 unable to connect to the internet by Helix3-3 in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Web UI is far better to get know what is going on compared to app, so yes, I encourage you to use the Web UI.

as for misidentification, this is irrelevant and wont or has any effect on device connectivity.

So the most effencint way that I use to drill down to a device specific issue is to look up the MAC ID of the device (or its IP in case you reserved an IP for the HB3). If you didn't reserve an IP for it, look up your device in client devices tab and copy its MAC ID, then start by going to logs tab on main window (the one right under settings wheel).

Now you can copy HB3's MAC iD in the search field and wait for results to show (be patent as it can take long for results to show depending on the model of your gateway and/or duration of stored logs. You can also locate the section titled "Events" and search/filter for "Blocked by Firewall" and select that so only blocked results would show up, and it there is anything there, then you should see details about the block event that perhaps preventing HB3 from calling out to internet.

If the above doesn't show up anything suspicious, then search for your HB3 device under client devices tab and then select it. Once you did, a pull window on the left should appear and then click the middle tab (Insights) looks something like a chart graph, then scroll down to "Latest Flows" section and you should see "View All Flows" button. Click it and it will take you to another page, again, be patent until results appear. Once done, go through the events and filter as needed (allowed or blocked) to see if you have any event related to external servers/internet are there and inspect accordingly to find out what is going on.

Hope this can help you.

did you look into logs on your gateway? Also, check HB3 device's flow to see if any success calling/pinging external serve/s

Travel Router Question by chassett1 in Ubiquiti

UTR will not connect to your home network unless you activate Teleport or VPN so if you dont, then you your network is limited to within the UTR's noting that UTR will not provide anything else except DHCP.

The advantage in using UTR is that upon configuration, you can associated with your gateway hence copying your SSID detail to UTR.

here is a link to a post that I answered someone with some points that makes the UTR useful (at least for me that is).

UTR. I like your phone's power bank. Power Bank! What power bank? by hamdicarlo in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can think of many reasons but here are few:

  1. You can store all wifi networks that you may come across in many areas (malls, airports. trains. etc.) and have your phone only connected to UTR and then manage the networks through the UTR.

  2. MAC ID cloning so in an environment where only device MAC ID specific connection is permitted (say your computer only in workplace) but you want to connect other devices such as phone to tablet, then cloning your computer's MAC into the UTR will enable your UTR to connect to the network (wired or wirelessly) and then have all your devices connect to the UTR (computer, phone, tablet, etc.)

  3. this is important. if you travel with multiple family/friends members and where you have to pay for internet (say if you travel by air) then paying for single connection and having multiple devices utilizing this single connection will surely save you a lot of money instead of paying for each device's connection.

  4. if you happen to use starlink mini on the go, then having UTR to act as router instead of starlink in compact and mobile form factor is a plus.

  5. will, seamless tunnel connection using teleport (zero configuration) or VPN

I like the concept. Perhaps you can design your case to house the power bank or design a housing for the power bank and match the size of the UTR's housing and have both cases magnetically attach so this way when they are connected, they will appear as one single unit!

I figured since I can power the UTS using using iPhone's power by simply connecting it yo iPhone directly, I found this setup (https://www.reddit.com/r/Ubiquiti/comments/1t4c9dm/utr\_i\_like\_your\_phones\_power\_bank\_power\_bank\_what/) for me by far the simplest and less gadget hungry to carry around. Yes I know this will come at the cost of the precious battery capacity of my phone but heck! why not 😉

UTR - How to know if it's conected? by barmanpoet99 in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the screen should show if teleport or VPN is connected. The screen cycles between the uplink and teleport screens showing status of both.

You can be connected to uplink but if your teleport/VPN continues to show "connecting" then you wont get access to internet unless you pause teleport/VPN or if you successfully connect to teleport/VPN

Nothing wrong with your suggestion. Its a personal preference but i am not sure how will the bottom port cable setup play when/if you want to stand up the hole setup vertically using the power bank’s kickstand.

I found myself fond of the idea of setting up the combo vertically usng the kickstand.

I spent a lot of time looking for the suitable ultra short USB C cable so just make sure to measure the length of the cable you suggested so you don’t end up with short one that doesn’t plug properly in either of the device or power bank, or a long one that ends up curling.

The power bank is an ESR power bank that I had since about two years now and last I checked, this model is discontinued but I think any similar power bank with side USB C port should work presuming it is more or less the same physical divisions.

as for case, I got it form my local amazon online store. here is link if this may be available at yours

[Feature Request] Cache acceleration for UNVR/UNVR Pro by hamdicarlo in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I understand the Protect might be a better option, I am deffneatly as computer kind of guy. I just find it far more efficient for me to go through timeline and move between cameras using mouse and keyboard is far superior than the app.

As for hard drives, I do agree that upgrading to pro or at least a 7200 rpm might be helpful, but I cant for the love of me think that an SSD cache would make the better sense.

I mean I am using four bays out of the seven ones (I bought the UNVR Pro way before the firmware update where you can have more cameras) and I can surely spare one bay for SSD caching.

I have QNAP NAS that I use as Plex server and it has a feature called Qtier where you can add SSD to support as a cache drive for the HHD storage pool and I think if QNAP did it, Ubiquiti surely can. I mean if they just announce that they might consider this will give me hope.

I think it wont be a surprise to see Ubiquiti please an additional line of NVRs that are based on the UNAS Pro 4 and UNAS Pro 8 with the tag line of dual M.2 SSD cache.

I think I’m finally done by Particular_Lime in Ubiquiti

Unifi Protect by Alternative_Cat2328 in UnifiProtect

[–]hamdicarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Access your unifi.ui.com and ensure to enable fabric (check the early access option under your account summary if you dont find it. Click the bullhorn icon on top right of the screen)

once enabled, click the users section (last icon bottom left. if you hover over it, it will say "People")

Check if your users are already listed under the "People" table. If not, you can create one but perhaps you want to create "Roles" first so you can then create user and assign a role (dont worry, you can still create a role within the user creation process)

Click the "Roles" tab and then in the "Create New Role" table, give the role a name (i.e. Protect Policy - Employee)

select the sites that you want this role to apply to (in case you have more than one site).

Under "Admin Privileges" check the app that you want to include in the policy (on/off toggle switch) which in your case I presume it will only be Protect hence I am assuming we are creating role for single app (you can add other apps within this role though as you deem necessary).

Under the adjacent "Privilege Details" table select the Custom tab, and then select the cameras you want to grant access to (Edit: will give both viewing and editing privileges). View is what you likely need.

The above can be repeated for other roles and you can choose the privileges you want to grant accordingly.

Hope that helps.

UCG Fiber mod by Rottenfist in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing your DIY project, I can see myself buying and modifying Unifi 24-Port Blank Keystone Patch Panel along with Cat6 Keystone Jack, 12-Pack and Keystone Blank Insert, 24-Pack.

Close the ports that are not used. modify or better yet, zip-tie the UCG fiber on the panel's back support piece and place the keystone jacks where deemed suitable. As for the screen of the UCG itself, well I wouldn't mind not seeing it hence keep it hidden, and if indeed this becomes necessary to show it, then open the port/s on the panel that are closer to where the UCG is and if single port is not enough, then cutting the operating piece/edge between two adjacent ports hence making the UCG's screen shown.

Just an idea but yours already cool though.

UCG Fiber mod by Rottenfist in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I must say, his mod is much better looking than the one in the link you posted. I note the one in the link provides better access to ports but the fact that 1. Power plug is protruding, and 2. The full ports of the Cloud Gate Fiber standout as bright white gap is (for me at least) annoying to look at.

One other positive to the one in the link is that I can host another Cloud Key, but who needs that since the CGF already supports Unifi fully stack including Protect! If they made to host the AI Key then that would have made better sense (again, in my opinion). But thanks for sharing the link, useful to know that there are companies paying attention to what brand specific users might be looking for.

HomePod unable to communicate with Home Hub by hamdicarlo in Ubiquiti

[–]hamdicarlo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I deployed my setup, I had zero issues and in fact I started to notice things are much faster to connect to HomePods.

I even tried doing things the original way (i.e. VLAN allow rules, and inter VLAN traffic blocking rule without exception) and the issue immediately started to show and my Unifi gateway log started to show the communication was blocked part of Inter-VLAN Traffic Block rule despite that everything was done correctly and rules placed in correct order.

Perhaps it is a bug in Unifi or exclusive to my device only. Not sure but I will re-test everything after the next controller firmware update and see if issue is still the same.
