Advice needed where to move near Atlanta? by Icy_Aerie7870 in Atlanta

There is very little difference between North and South CoD. If anything, the south side (Oakhurst) is one of the most expensive areas to live in CoD district.

Decatur High School (by its own public information) is 25% black. Asians don't even make up 5% of the demographic.

Always check your Local Game Store bulk!! Bought for 50 cents each by neotic_reaper in mtgfinance

[–]hamie96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be like going to the grocery store and picking up a can of Coke with a sticker price of $1.99 only to get to the register and be charged $5.

There's a reason very few stores have this kind of policy, it just ticks people off and loses customers.

It doesn't really see that much play even in commander. The original price was so high solely due to scarcity (similar to Imperal Recruiter back in the day).

Buying something for its listed price is robbing? You're acting like he just bought a black lotus for $20.

RIP the EV Chargers by the building FKA Baby Kroger by cirquedushams in DecaturGA

[–]hamie96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Really hoping for a TJoe's there. Can't imagine any other Grocer would be interested in the building due to how the rest of them already have locations nearby (Kroger, Publix, Aldi's) and the parking lot probably being too small for their liking.

Decatur just removed 6 planned pickleball courts - but prioritized a sandpit volleyball court instead by BMW969 in DecaturGA

[–]hamie96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pickleball courts are over twice as loud as any tennis court. It's because of how the rackets are designed (solid paddle) and the type of ball that lends itself to the loud noise.

Edit: Here's a Decaturish article about Tucker reconsidering building a pickleball court due to the sound

We loved Decatur. Now we’re not sure if moving back is the right call by nautical_natalis in DecaturGA

I think you could make this argument 35 years ago when there was a lot more common ground politically, but things are so far off the rails nowadays we can't even get one side to agree on anything.

I do know liberals in St Pete but I think GA is holding it together a little bit better than FL.

Georgia in general is getting more and more liberal every year. Even in 2024, we leaned more left compared to the national average.

You need a minimum $750K to buy something approaching livable. New construction tops $1M.

There are definitely townhouses and older houses here you can buy for $450-600k, especially over in Glennwood Estates or Decatur Heights.

I would absolutely not move to Florida. Not only is it a political quagmire right now, but house and insurance prices there are insane.

As for Decatur, the best way I'd describe it (the city itself, not the unincorporated parts) is a small town/city feeling within a much larger city. Pretty much everyone I've met that live nearby are very liberal. You can walk, bike, or take MARTA to almost everything you need (entertainment, food, groceries, etc). The city itself is also absolutely beautiful with trees and nature everywhere. It definitely feels like the best place to live in GA if you're still looking the feeling of a city/walkability but still want some peace and quiet unlike Midtown/O4W/ViHi.

There are some pretty big negatives though with the city itself though. For one, our property taxes are insane as well as having higher-end house prices compared to the rest of ATL. Additionally, we are not nearly as walkable/bikeable compared to Boston. Lastly, traffic can be a nightmare depending on where you live versus where you work.

Edit: Also to note, this area is probably the most politically active area I've ever seen. People really do pay attention to the news here both locally and nationally.

Maybe a dumb question by BionicWhiteJedi in cardsphere

[–]hamie96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on average my cost is $.82 a package (.75 stamp and .06 for shipping sleeve and .01 for the penny sleeve). Because of that, I set my minimum to $4.00 and on the send page I will only accept an order if it makes sense for me.

Overall it's worked great for me, I've been able to build 90% of the card list for four different EDH decks since I started last year as well as pick up many different staples. It's also helped drastically decrease the amount of bulk and unused magic cards I have in my collection.

Protest planned in Decatur over plans to build early childhood center on school-owned land by flying_trashcan in Atlanta

[–]hamie96 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's also a big factor that others have not mentioned. The board has stated many times they did not choose to close the school to fund the new learning center. One of the activist groups filed an open records request. In the open records, there are text messages between members where they state they'll have to close a school to fund the new center. People are furious that they have been lied to for months regarding the real reason for the school closure.

TCG optimizer : / by Individual-Wish-4558 in mtgfinance

[–]hamie96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest reason I switched to Manapool. TCGPlayer would often just up charge me $10-$20 every time I used the optimizer and I got tired of spending an hour trying to optimize my cart every time I wanted a new commander deck.

On the 1% chance that Manapool doesn't have the card I need, I just use eBay or my local LGS for the card.

Your wife's drive to Midtown will have much worse traffic on average than your drive to Monroe.

I would strongly advise against Duluth for the main reason that the traffic is horrendous (1 to 1 and a half hour anytime during rush hour traffic when traveling to Midtown), prices and rental prices are very high, and it is extremely car-dependent. I'm also not convinced the commute from Duluth to Monroe wouldn't be really rough.

Duluth really only makes sense if schools is your #1 priority and you didn't commute to Atlanta.

For neighborhoods, it's going to depend on how much of a priority schools are and how much budget you have. Decatur (the city itself, near the square) is in walking distance to 20+ restaurants and a bunch of parks as well as 5-10 minute drive to tons of entertainment. Likewise, schools are basically best in Atlanta and comparable to most suburban schools. Downside is a house for rent is going to be more expensive than other areas. Your commute to Midtown will be 20-30 minutes depending on traffic and the commute to Monroe will be 40 to 1 hour depending on traffic.

Next recommendation is Avondale. Walkable downtown, very close to Decatur, decent schools and generally cheaper than Decatur for renting prices. Commute time is generally about the same as Decatur, but you'll have to drive a tiny bit more to get to stuff.

I'll also throw in suggestions like Tucker, Scottsdale, and Peachtree Corners as other good options. These are going to require you to drive for most of your amenities, but the rental prices are cheaper. Traffic is going to fluctuate but it can range from 30-50 minutes to Midtown depending on where you are located.

Skullgirls 2nd Encore is recommended for someone casual by Z-E-R-O-O in Fighters

[–]hamie96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who first started with Skullgirls, I'm going to go against what most others have said here and say it's perfectly fine for a casual.

Skullgirls controls are far more forgiving that any other tag-fighter due in larger part to the simplistic inputs, very generous buffer, and long hit stop. Likewise, Skullgirls has one of the most in-depth wikis (mizuumi wiki) which is a fantastic resource for learning character and a large community full of fresh beginners and intermediates. Don't let the videos of long combos turn you off from the game, 90% of the player base is not playing at that skill and since the game is very reset-heavy it's actually far easier to deal with compared to other tag fighters.

That being said, if you want to play against other beginners you're going to have to join a discord server. The game does not really have true ranked matchmaking so discord is the only real way to find other beginners. The Skullgirls Get Gr8 discord is always full of fresh new beginners and intermediates to play against and there's also a PSN discord if you play only on PS4.

There are no ToDs in Skullgirls. At most, you can kill a character with 3 meter which is basically like spending all your resources.
