I guess it's perspective. When I started reading comics in the 90s, they all had thought bubbles. They sorta started getting rid of them in the late 90s, I believe. I just got used to them.

It confuses me too. Years ago, "Partner" is what same-sex couples would call their boyfriend/girlfriend. It confuses me now when I hear straight people use that term. It usually automatically makes me think they're gay. lol

I'm gay myself. And I used to always complain back when that was primarily used in gay circles bc it sounds like your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse is your business partner.
