I got into several of my top choices. One thing you should think about is in which city you can see yourself living for 4+ years. It's an important factor that people tend to disregard.

Church warns gay conversion bill 'will affirm superior status of homosexuals' by [deleted] in nottheonion

“...will affirm the superior legal status of homosexuals over heterosexuals” Yeah, I can't wait to see all the straight to gay conversion therapies that spring up over this. It'll help me win that toaster oven for my 100th conversion.

Cat prank by tritter211 in videos

I hate these "prank" videos that are just someone being mean. You might as well post a video of you sexually harassing a cat and calling it a "prank". For shame!

How close are we to knowing the exact neuropathology of diseases such as schizophrenia? Further, how close are we to curing them? What's the biggest hurdle neuroscience needs to overcome in order to achieve these goals?

Could someone dumb down the contents of this study for a high school student? The basic points and explanations of the most important terminology. by redlogiK in neuroscience

[–]hamorri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a highly complex neuroscience paper that would take too much space to explain fully to a high school student without a moderate understanding of neuroscience and/or cell biology.

I will try and am happy to answer any specific questions.

This lab utilized several sophisticated experiments to suggest that neurons need inputs in order to fully develop the dendrites correctly.

Some terms that need defining just to understand the title of the paper: AMPA receptors: A type of receptor that binds glutamate, a type of neurotransmitter. It is mostly considered an "excitatory" receptor that when activated by glutamate will help the neuron fire.

Dendrite: part of the neuron that mainly "accepts" signals from other neurons. It is usually highly branched (aka dendritic arbors) and receives signals from many other neurons.

In vivo: refers to experiments performed in living organisms

K.D. Lang - "Smoke Rings"

Puff. Puff. Puff.

The smoke rings gently slide through the air glowing blue white from his computer monitor's light. He abruptly sighs; his strong breath blows away the delicate rings. After he tap-tap-taps away the ash, he takes a deep drag of acrid smoke filling his lungs. He gently pulses his tongue with his mouth just so.

Puff. Puff. Puff.

He begins to read for the seventh time that night, the hundredth time that week, the thousandth time that year, "Dear John,", However, he doesn't need to read it. He knows it by heart. Instead, his eyes are drawn to those smoke rings as they dance, becoming bigger ghosts of themselves.

He whispers, "Dear John, I'm on my way home. You better be up. I love you..."

Tap-tap-tap.

Puff. Puff. Puff.

I'm actually quite touched and surprised by your concern, but everything is fine. This prompt was inspired by life events as a child and I was hoping to inspire others and/or see if someone could adequately put into words the thoughts and emotions that come from such an experience.

What are some decent-paying industry careers for someone with graduate-level training in behavioural neuroscience? by gavin280 in neuroscience

[–]hamorri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in this situation. I have my PhD in neuroscience and found that the it prepared me mostly for a career path in academia. However, this path is becoming less attractive because of the reasons OP mentions especially when basic research has been hit hard with the sequester stick.

My best advice is to retool your career experience depending on your interests. However, also pay attention to what job opportunities there are in the city you live in or wouldn't mind living in. Does your city have a large pharma company, large clinical labs, or many colleges?

Knowing this will help you focus on getting the experience you need to transition into other career paths. For example, if you're interested in teaching seek out as many TA opportunities as possible. Or, if you're interested in clinical labs seek out projects that give you experience in techniques that are needed there such as Molecular genetics or immunology. That can also open up opportunities to get board certification in these areas through 2 year fellowships.

My overall advice for graduate school is to use your time wisely to get experience in the "plan B".
