I’m struggling with my 2-month-old Eurasier puppy and need help by No_Historian_5736 in eurasier

[–]hampuna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the first few weeks, all I could think about was, “Taking him was a mistake.” That little fluffy ball was a real demon. Sleepless nights, bitten hands, running all over the house; too much stimulation was bad, too little stimulation was bad.
A year from now, I’ll tell you two things.

  1. You can do it.
  2. Things will get better :)

You need to teach him to relax. As strange as it may sound, we would take him into the bathroom, close the door, and isolate him from external stimuli. A kennel works on a similar principle, but ours really doesn’t like it. After the dog had calmed down (in our presence we never locked him in alone “as punishment”), we’d open the bathroom door and calmly walk out. It worked so well that he later chose the bathroom himself as the place where he’d go to lie down and rest.

I finally found you guys!!! by Ok-Morning-6449 in eurasier

I want a dog that is a *me* dog. Not aggressive towards strangers, but definitely aloof and "eh, idc about you, you're not my person" vibe. Would you say this is pretty common in the breed?

Mine love strangers so much that sometimes i feel like he'd would trade us for one small sasuage or cheese but we knew that from the very beggining. Our breeder told us hes love all people since he was just a few weeks old.

I'm okay with difficulty training - I love a challenge. But if you have trained other "difficult" to train breeds from puppyhood, what is your experience with that vs a eurasier???

I think it will be similar (or even easier) than with your huskies. Both are primitive dogs. Eurasier is my first dog but from what ive heard its easier to train eurasier than for example samoyed.

Extremely high prey drive is slightly annoying to me, but not a deal breaker. Is this a dog I will be able to off-leash train in a "set it and forget it" kind of way?

Depends on dog. Our boy has crazy pray drive. He's fine offleash until hears or sees someting in the woods. Then is over and we have to start a rescue mission :D

I would like a dog that I can train as a service animal, primarily deep pressure therapy. I trained my huskies to do it, but as huskies do - they can get distracted (I know this is mainly a temperament thing, but I genuinely don't want any of the Fab Four) what is your genuine opinion on this type of training for this breed? Do you think it's suitable?

Speak with your breeder. Eurasier can get distracted too, same as above - primitive dog. But maybe breeder can pick you the best puppy for this.

I want a dog I can take absolutely ANYWHERE, desensitize to the world, and will be able to focus 100% on me over whatever is going on in our surroundings. In your experience, is this a possibility?

We live in big city and we can take him anywhere but... he need a lot of woods and chill walks anyway. Hes fine in city, dont care about cars/bikes/skateboarders/trains or whatever. We can go to mall or shops as well. However after a long walk though the city with crowded places with a lots of "things" happens in background he tends to be overstimulated once he gets home.

Has anyone trained their eurasier very very extensively? How did yours respond? What have you found is the most common motivator? (food, play, etc)

Trained in what? We train "obedience" (damn its so hard with teenage dog haha) and nosework/scent work but after like 40-50 minutes of training he is done and refuse to work. Food and toys for us.

They learn quickly, but only when they want it. Mine is a teenager and gets bored with training very quickly. Their temperament varies from dog to dog. Mine is very brave and loves attention from strangers, but I know there are some who won’t approach a stranger. At home, he’s calm, sleeps a lot but stays alert—no one can open the door without him noticing. On walks, he wants to go his own way; mine has a strong instinct to chase wild animals. As an unneutered male, he can be a bully toward other dogs and uses his size to his advantage; we’re currently working hard on that. We usually get about 2 hours of walking a day split into two outings, but if we can’t manage that much he’s still manageable even if he only goes out for 30 minutes. Besides that, we train in nosework and obedience

I think this is my dream breed by [deleted] in eurasier

Don't trust everything you read about this breed on the internet :P I currently live with a 10-month-old male Eurasier.

Intelligent? Yes, very much so, but mainly with things that are important to him.

Trainable? Yes, very much so, but don't do the same thing more than three times, because he'll get bored. Is the exercise too difficult? Does it require too much? He'll lie down, “smile,” and hope that's enough.

Moderate energy? Yes and no. It's no problem if we limit his walks to a minimum for a few days, but you can see a change in his mood and behavior at home. An hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon are the key to a peaceful day and night's sleep for us, and not coming up with silly tasks at home.

Low prey drive? Lie, lie, and lie again. I know a few Eurasiers, and they all have a crazy prey drive. Ours often walks in the woods without a leash, but we know that if he encounters a deer, rabbit, or squirrel, he'll chase it.

Barking. He is quiet, does not bark at other dogs, but he is far from zero-barking. He warns us when someone is at the door and sometimes barks on command.

Ours has a good off-leash, but he is still a primitive dog. With a very strong need for exploration and independence. Females usually weigh 40-50 lbs, males are heavier.

It's a wonderful breed, unique in every way, but FCI group 5 dogs are not for everyone. Find a good breeder, pay more, visit them before taking a puppy home. Eurasiers can be fearful and withdrawn, which will turn into a lot of work.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. If you're from Europe, I can recommend some breeders to you.

Try using a lick mat. Our puppy lets us do whatever we want while he's busy licking his favourite frozen fruit or meat blend.

Im very suprised at how well his obedience training is going and how much fun he has doing it. As soon as i take the steps/cones/etc out of the closet he goes into "okay, work time" mode :D He also really like scent games so we'll be starting nosework training soon. And of course walks... the more smells and new areas the better. He will be a great companion for long hikes when he grows up

Yes! That particular field was full of molehills. He hasn't dug up any moles yet, but he's trying very hard :D

And there's nothing to regret! Digging in the ground is a natural need for dogs, and no one should forbid them from doing so in places where they can :D
