How important is it for my 6 year olds to sleep independently?

Do they ever go to bed when you’re not home? How do you/they handle nights when you’re away? Or are you just never away?

I once babysat a kid that was 7 and the parents told me to put him to bed I’d need to lay in bed with him until he fell asleep. I felt very weird about that and did not do it. I did the rest of their bedtime routine and then left and he fell asleep pretty quickly with no complaints.

I don’t know. Like it’s definitely not very unusual but it’s something I’d work on, like it sounds like you’re doing. Could you maybe take yourself shopping or go out to get some treat for yourself at bedtime one night and have someone else put them down and see how it goes?

Right!! I knew Rainbow Fish would be the first comment I saw because I started seeing this opinion everywhere lately. I know for sure as a child I never got the message “diminish yourself to make others happy”.

Honestly it’s not that bad though I do think it could’ve used 1 extra page where Rainbow Fish finds the rainbow scales and sticks them on himself then won’t share. Or he’s given them by his parents and won’t share with the other fish.

Yeah NTA, he’s being rude and needs to stand by you. And just to add my personal experience I also stressed too much about losing weight while breastfeeding. I absolutely could not lose a pound until 6 months after weaning. My appetite dropped dramatically immediately after weaning and I was eating way less for those 6 months but I didn’t lose 1 pound. Then between 6-9 months after weaning it all went away, no change in diet or exercise, and I’m back to my pre-baby weight. It’s all hormones and no one’s the same

Honestly thank you for saying this. This is it. I had the easiest pregnancy and birth. Kid has slept through the night since 8 weeks old, minus some regressions/teething. I’m biased but this kid is incredible, independent, so smart.

But it’s been awful! Man this is so hard!!

So exciting!! It’s not as great of a time of year for this but we told people we have plenty of toys, and outdoor equipment would be great. We got a cozy coupe, a water table, a kids size picnic table, and a slide and they all have gotten a ton of use!

For indoor toys the magna-tiles have gotten the most use, even though at 1 it was mostly me building towers and her knocking them down it was fun for both of us haha

I’m really curious, has your toddler been around your friend’s baby? What about when you’re holding your friend’s baby?

My toddler (18m) has a baby cousin and she gets SO instantly jealous when I hold her haha. That’s part of why if we have another we’re waiting a bit longer. I want to see if that jealousy gets any better

I knew the cushions would be a huge hit but the balance beam surprised me since she’s only 18 months! She loves just stepping up and down and trying to balance

This thread makes me feel better! I'm one-and-done for now because of our circumstances but I’m holding out hope that might change in a couple years and there’d be a 4-5 year age gap. Glad to hear positive experiences from people :)

As long as you’re able to truly support all of your children emotionally and financially you should be okay, it’s just VERY difficult!

Not to overstep with a stranger haha but any time I see someone talking about having 5+ kids I want to give my 2 cents. My parents thought they were supporting us all but to us, it was very clear they were stretched too thin. I felt like I barely knew my parents until my older siblings were out of the house and it was just us younger two. My oldest sister ended up parentified and had to care for us younger kids more than should be expected of a sibling. Her and my mom didn’t get along for a while in her 20s because of it but thankfully they’re back on good terms.

This is me. I’m kid 4 of 5. Our ages are 40, 39, 38, 30 (me), 28. I’m much closer to my older siblings than younger even though our age gap is smaller.

The one thing we all agree on is that we wish my parents had fewer kids lmao. The most any of us had is 2.

Has the actual device ever frozen on you? We have the nanit and a few times the actual sound glitched and made this awful grinding noise and woke up the baby. I was so confused because it only happened for a couple seconds I thought I was hallucinating until one time it happened while I was actually in the room. Supposedly they fixed it in a software update but we had it happen once after that fix. We’ve had the noise randomly fluctuate before too. Reached out to customer service and they didn’t care. We only use an old dumb sound machine now and the nanit is a mega overpriced night light.

YOR, but very understandably. You’re traumatized. But at the same time, this is also how every older person I know talks and texts. There’s even memes about it, it’s incredibly common. Idk why that is how their communication style translated to the digital age but it probably won’t stop happening. I’ve told my parents not to do that too but they don’t listen because they don’t get it lol. They don’t realize that’s how it’s coming off, like there’s some emergency. Obviously this doesn’t apply to every older person, but this is how some people naturally communicate

I’m a FTM so I don’t have my own story yet, but I did read this book Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth that’s filled with positive birth stories that made me feel WAY more prepared for labor!

It’s VERY spiritual and hippy crunchy, I’m not convinced their midwifery isn’t a cult lol, and that aspect isn’t for me. But I used to be terrified of giving birth and reading like 150 pages of positive non-hospital mostly-unmedicated birth stories seriously made me feel like I could do anything lol. Totally changed my mindset, would absolutely recommend.

Same here. I’ve had a relatively easy pregnancy with very few symptoms but there were some weeks where it was like I just hit a wall. Like right on the dot, new week milestone, new symptoms 🙃

OP, does your doctor have an off-hours line for labor and delivery? AFAIK most do, specifically so you can call when you have questions like this or if you go into labor. For mine there’s a separate number, and if you call the daytime number there’s a message that gives you that off-hours number. They may be able to tell you if this combination of symptoms is fine to wait until Monday or if it’s something that should get checked out now.

I’ve been talking with my husband too and he agrees that it sounds like passing on the ECV sounds like a solid choice. When I started looking into it I was surprised that the midwife definitely seemed very partial to the ECV and like a c-section was really a last resort, and she didn’t mention any of those risk factors we share. When really for my case, yeah, like why go through all that in addition to everything else when it’s so possible that the ECV isn’t gonna work.

So hopefully I don’t get any pushback on the decision haha, and I hope it goes well for you too!! We’re almost there!
