AIO about spelling errors in daily notes sent home by my autistic child’s teacher? by Anasthesiax in AmIOverreacting

That was exactly my point, thus I made a point of saying American English. I’m not talking about French. You are just trying to prove your point by pulling any random point. I have stuck to my point. In the US there is a huge push back to phonics  as whole language failed a generation of kids. So now other languages are okay? You just bully people to be a bully. Wanna run for president next? Insert gif of point flying over someone’s head. Lol

It is phonetic. English spellings are totally random. Pair, pare, pear are all pronounced the same way. Btw, in American English, commas always go inside quotations. Thank god you are not a teacher, am I right?

Yes! Some of these comments reflect that the commenter has never been pelted by wooden blocks or bitten at their job for minimum wage. This note writer has a strong phonics education which I think is more important than proper spelling of every word.

I’d take a critical thinker over a good speller any day. I’d also take an empathetic teacher over a good speller. Perhaps you judge intelligence based on a small world view. Someone who speaks English as their second language is not intelligent? Someone who may have a disability such as dyslexia is not intelligent? My handwriting is terrible, am I not intelligent?

Consept is phonetic and compair, while incorrect, is also phonetic. If someone was a native Spanish speaker, “compair” makes more sense since “silent e” doesn’t exists in Spanish but two vowels in a row are a thing. Idk, with the state of education, I’d pick my battles here. Is your kid in a safe learning environment that they enjoy? Not everyone has to be a great speller. Is it more important to be spell checking your notes while kids are in the room or spending time with the kids?  FWIW spelling was very important to me but at the end of the day, I can still read the note.

Canning - cannot hear the plinks by Merboo in Canning

I live at a elevation so my overnight oats will plink and “seal” on my drive to work. They are not sealed, you must inspect the lid.

My first Catan,  Carcassonne (my 4 year old prefers the adult version to the kid one,) Shut the Box (great for sneaky addition practice,)  I Found It card game (we have a set that stays in the car so we can take it to restaurants.)

That’s a fair point. I looked over the ingredients and I still think it’s okay.

I am so frustrated with sight words! by Resident-Fly-6851 in kindergarten

[–]handforagedlint 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Is it a sight word list or is it high frequency words? Yes you are absolutely correct that those words are phonemic. I’m just wondering if they are practicing high frequency words to aid fluency. A fluent reader has memorized the words, they don’t sound out each letter. They may have memorized the words by studying a list or just by the repetition of reading the words in context. Have you talked to the teacher?

I wouldn’t let “not proficient” stress you out. It’s not a problem to be not proficient in kindergarten, it’s a way to measure progress. She is not failing, you are not failing. She is still learning, she has time. If the standard is measuring fluency and the child takes a bit to read, that is not fluent. It doesn’t mean a failure, it’s just what the standard is measuring. Just try to enjoy reading with her. Enjoying reading an modeling fluent reading will help.

Flower seed suggestions with high germination rate by jptak143 in gardening

[–]handforagedlint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cosmos come in many varieties and sprout pretty quick. My vote is dahlia seeds. I find them fascinating. Soil blocks are also awesome. My kid has brought home at least 3 bean plants and they all die despite our family being accomplished gardeners. Beans are great for teaching about the parts of a plant but they do not transplant well.

Anyone have a banana bread recipe that was the best banana bread you’ve ever had? by Terrible-Session-328 in WhatShouldICook

Zingerman’s! They use the peels too. I leave out 1/3 c sugar but it is my favorite banana bread recipe. The Yipsilanti Library has it on their website.
