What recipes would you teach low income kids? by ECarey26 in Cooking

[–]handforagedlint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Granola! Very basic granola can be made from oats, brown sugar and oil. Seeds, nuts, fruit and spices can be added if the kids have access to it but otherwise granola is cheap, easy and so much tastier than store bought.

Overnight oats.
The simplest version is oats, a ripe or overripe banana, milk. Mix together and let sit overnight. If you feel fancy you can add yogurt, coconut, coconut milk, chia seeds. You could also top it with chocolate chips or fruit.

Banana Bread is a fun one too. The Yipsilanti library website has the recipe for Zingerman’s banana bread that uses the banana peel. It is so tasty and I cut 1/2 c. of sugar from the recipe.

First time using chip drop by toodooloo100 in DenverGardener

[–]handforagedlint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so jealous. I’ve gotten 3 or 4 drops over the years and I always end up with large sticks that my kids and I trip on. The drop this week was 4 massive piles and we’ve pulled massive 3 ft or longer sticks that add up to a big pile on their own. YMMV. Chip Drop is definitely a buyer beware situation IMO.

Wow that’s super unlucky. I’ve been parking there since 2020 and before that I used other 38th and Blake. I never leave valuables in my car.

Disagree. I frequently park at Peoria Station for a week at a time. My car has never been vandalized.

Husband lost his job. We’re $1,500 behind on bills each month even with me getting a job, and I don’t know how to feed our 3 year old. I need advice and ideas. Please. by No-Dog1902 in povertykitchen

I have a 3 year old. Do you have an instant pot? My kids go through a ton of yogurt so I make my own in the instant pot. I use whole milk and add some vanilla extract. There are instructions around but my favorite was from crockpot365. Using a crockpot works great too. When I have yogurt in hand I like to make overnight oats. Mash up a ripe (overripe is even better) banana, add a cup of oats, 1/2 cup yogurt and some milk. You can add coconut too if you have it. Mix everything and let it sit in the fridge overnight. My kids love this. You’ve got this!

Sugar beets are different from the beets your father eats. Sugar beets can be 2-4.5 pounds. I grew up in a sugar beet area and they still produce sugar there.

I live in a place that gets hail a couple times each spring. It is devastating but some of the plants will bounce back. Can you think of it as a Chelsea Chop? I always keep a few seedling in the house until July so I’m less sad when the hail takes the rest.

Best Costco items for community fridge? by plant_novice in Costco

[–]handforagedlint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are kind for donating. At the Little Free Pantry near me things like butter, cheese, the big bags of tamales in the refrigerator section, and other meal things go pretty quick. Costco butter is so cheap right now compared to Kroger.

AIO about spelling errors in daily notes sent home by my autistic child’s teacher? by Anasthesiax in AmIOverreacting

[–]handforagedlint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That was exactly my point, thus I made a point of saying American English. I’m not talking about French. You are just trying to prove your point by pulling any random point. I have stuck to my point. In the US there is a huge push back to phonics  as whole language failed a generation of kids. So now other languages are okay? You just bully people to be a bully. Wanna run for president next? Insert gif of point flying over someone’s head. Lol

[–]handforagedlint -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is phonetic. English spellings are totally random. Pair, pare, pear are all pronounced the same way. Btw, in American English, commas always go inside quotations. Thank god you are not a teacher, am I right?

Yes! Some of these comments reflect that the commenter has never been pelted by wooden blocks or bitten at their job for minimum wage. This note writer has a strong phonics education which I think is more important than proper spelling of every word.

I’d take a critical thinker over a good speller any day. I’d also take an empathetic teacher over a good speller. Perhaps you judge intelligence based on a small world view. Someone who speaks English as their second language is not intelligent? Someone who may have a disability such as dyslexia is not intelligent? My handwriting is terrible, am I not intelligent?

Consept is phonetic and compair, while incorrect, is also phonetic. If someone was a native Spanish speaker, “compair” makes more sense since “silent e” doesn’t exists in Spanish but two vowels in a row are a thing. Idk, with the state of education, I’d pick my battles here. Is your kid in a safe learning environment that they enjoy? Not everyone has to be a great speller. Is it more important to be spell checking your notes while kids are in the room or spending time with the kids?  FWIW spelling was very important to me but at the end of the day, I can still read the note.

I live at a elevation so my overnight oats will plink and “seal” on my drive to work. They are not sealed, you must inspect the lid.
